Happy snow day! Want to avoid shoveling for a while? Did you know that the
Board of Selectmen and School Committee meetings are taped and replayed
during the course of the week? Thanks to ATOTW reader Audrey Baressi for
connecting with Colleen Smith at HCTV and sending along the following
information:

A schedule of these meetings airs on Ch 8 and Ch 10 (Comcast) and Ch 36 and
38 (Verizon). School Committee meetings are replayed during the week on Ch
22 (Comcast) and Ch 37 (Verizon). The schedule for the School Committee
meetings also runs on the Ch 22/ 37 bulletin boards. Selectmen’s meetings
are replayed on Ch 10 (Comcast) and Ch 36 (Verizon). Community events are
re-broadcast on Ch 8 (Comcast) and Ch 38 (Verizon).

So, unless you have a smartphone, you have power if you are reading this.
It is still snowing as I write this. Turn on the tube and catch up on all
the excitement from the big School Committee meeting and SC meeting with the
Selectmen this week instead of venturing out just yet!

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Hanover Diversity Committee
presents an afternoon with Holocaust survivor Janet Applefield on Sunday,
January 16th at 3:00 p.m. The presentation will be held at St. Andrew’s
Episcopal Church, located at 17 Church Street. There will be a reception to
follow. Suggested donations are $2.00 per person or $5.00 per family. Ms.
Applefield has spoken to numerous students and promotes tolerance through
telling her own story.

Hanover Community Access Television is looking for volunteers to assist in
the production of cable access content. Whether you are interested in
producing your own show, or just assisting in the taping of meetings, shows,
and other community events, there are plenty of chances to get involved.
People of all ages with all levels of experience are encouraged to
volunteer. Training will be provided free of charge to all those

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Long-time readers will remember the good work of Hanover’s own Kerline
Tofuri of Jou Nouvo. Kerline and her family are great friends to many of
us, and she has been featured here on ATOTW more than once over the years.
I was delighted when the Hanover Mariner picked up the story, too. Kerline
paused at the new year and at nearly the first anniversary of the earthquake
in Haiti to pen all of us the following letter:

On behalf of Jou Nouvo (JN), I would like to express my deepest thanks for
your support in 2010. Thank you to all of you who donated lots of medical
and school supplies, clothes and shoes, tents, comfort dolls, and monetary
donations to help families in Haiti. My deepest gratitude to all teachers,
Girl and Boy Scouts and other community groups, and parents and their
children who coordinated book sales and bake sales, collected and donated
books and backpacks filled with school supplies-and to the youth who sent
written notes and made posters for children in Haiti. The world will never
forget what happened on January 12th in Haiti. I will never forget your
compassion, generosity, and your quick response in reaching out to those in
need.

Your on-going support enabled Jou Nouvo to quickly respond to devastating
crisises. We continue to advocate for comprehensive and sustainable projects
that will undoubtedly change many lives and communities for the better.

In 2011, I look forward to continuing to work with Partners In Development
(PID) and to expand Jou Nouvo’s programs to end the cycle of poverty,
hunger, and diseases. With your help, Jou Nouvo will continue to promote
literacy, economic development, and better health for families in Bon-Repos,

Melanie Austin, MS, CCC-SLP is the director of speech services at South
Shore Therapies in both Weymouth and Pembroke. She has worked in outpatient
pediatric treatment settings for many years and has provided services to
children with a wide variety of diagnoses including autism spectrum
disorder, childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering, pragmatic language
disorders, auditory processing disorders, and other learning disabilities.
Melanie has frequently lectured on an array of speech and language topics
for parents, health care professionals and school programs such as Child
Care Choices of Boston, Community Care for Kids, and various other parent
advisory councils. She regularly participates in the South Shore Therapies
lecture series.

Per some follow-up questions to my earlier e-mail regarding the potential
school budget cuts, I am writing to offer two pieces of additional
information and a correction.

Below please find the projected class sizes for the elementary schools next
year if and/or when the budget cuts go through:

Center/Sylvester enrollment: Total = 554

K: 95 (15, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16)

1: 105 (21, 21,21,21, 21)

2: 110 (22, 22, 22, 22, 22)

3: 128 (25, 25, 26, 26, 26)

4: 116 (23, 23, 23, 23, 24)

Cedar enrollment: Total = 407

K: 56 (14, 14, 14, 14)

1: 62 (20, 21,21)

2: 92 (23, 23, 23, 23)

3: 105 (21, 21, 21, 21, 21)

4: 92 (23, 23, 23, 23)

The School Committee’s own guidelines for maximum class sizes at the
elementary level are 20 children at the K – 2nd grade level and 23 children
for the third and fourth grades. You can see that all of the first, second
and third grade class sizes at Center/Sylvester will exceed those guidelines
and some of the 1st grade and all of the 2nd grade class sizes at Cedar will
exceed those guidelines if the current enrollment does not change.

Further, due to incorrect information received by ATOTW, please note that
there was a minor error in the budget cut e-mail that was sent yesterday.
While the projected class sizes in third grade for next year at
Center/Sylvester are alarming, it is actually a 4th grade position that will
be cut (not a third grade position as previously mentioned). The large
third grade class sizes are due to an enrollment "bubble" at next year’s
third grade, as you can see above.

Finally, in a separate but related issue, due to the projected cuts in the
athletic budget, user fees at the high school will increase dramatically
next year. This year, students pay $265 per student per year to play a
sport, with an $80 surcharge for the three more expensive sports – hockey,
football and basketball. Next year, the projected user fee will be $475 per
student per year with the same additional surcharges. Freshmen sports will
remain intact, but also at these user fee levels.

Please be aware that any or all of this information may change due to budget
changes at the state or federal level this spring. Many thanks to the good
folks of the school department for their time and patience with me as we
endeavor to get this important information to you.

The Hanover Parent Teacher Alliance cordially invites you to attend our
member meetings. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 11 at the
Hanover Police Station beginning at 11:00 a.m. Come and learn more about
our active HPTA and how you can help support our children’s educational
endeavors.

If you aren’t able to attend our meetings or participate we ask you to
consider becoming a financial supporter of the Hanover Parent Teacher
Alliance. Yearly membership dues are $15. Checks may be made payable to
the HPTA and sent to any of the district’s school offices, attention HPTA.

8th Grade Curriculum Night

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Attention all 8th graders! Hanover High School will be hosting its annual
8th Grade Curriculum Night on January 27th at 7:00 p.m. Eighth graders and
their parents/guardians are invited to attend. Come and hear about our
exciting ninth grade curriculum in the new building. In addition to a
presentation on ninth grade academic requirements and elective choices, Dr.
Raab, our principal, will include a virtual tour of the new Hanover High
School as part of our DVD presentation highlighting Hanover High School. We
will also have representatives from the various sports, clubs, and
activities available in the gymnasium to answer questions. Light
refreshments will be served. Hope to see everyone in the Class of 2015!
