Potential budget cuts in the schools

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Saturday, December 18, the School Committee met with administrators
regarding the FY ’12 budget. In preparing for this meeting, the school
committee directed the administration to prepare its fourth straight year of
a level funded budget of $23,132,796, which in order to meet contractual
obligations translates into an almost $2.0 million dollar cut, offset by a
one-time deferred federal grant for education jobs of $368,725, for a net
reduction of over $1.6 million dollars.

There are two important budget meetings that are coming up in the next week
that you may be interested in attending. I encourage you to attend to get
updated information, and hear the budget discussions from our town leaders:

Candy for a Cause wrap-up

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I hope you and your family are enjoying the holiday season. In keeping with
the spirit of giving that pervades this time of year, I am delighted to
bring you a wrap-up report from Libby Corbo, who brings us news regarding
this past fall’s "Candy for a Cause" collection here in Hanover:

"I just wanted to send along an update on the Candy for a Cause collection
at the John Curtis Free Library. This year we collected over 300 pounds of
candy! We sent 34 boxes full of candy and cards (made by local residents
and St. Mary’s CCD classes) to soldiers stationed overseas (and a local
state-side soldier as well)! A big thank you to the John Curtis Free
Library staff who collect all the candy with smiles, to Peter Nixon of AT&T
mobility who paid for ALL 34 boxes to be shipped out and, of course, to all
those that donated the candy and made cards! This year we received quite a
few local soldier nominations and we also sent boxes to units deployed out
of Massachusetts by using the website www.anysoldier.com
. This site links you to soldiers who
volunteer to receive mail and distribute packages to other soldiers in their
unit that have not received many packages from home. It is a site worth
visiting all year long."
