The American Red Cross is holding a Blood Drive to
support the Hanover community blood supply for patients in need.  Every two
seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and every pint donated could
save up to three lives.  The Red Cross is urging Hanover residents to make an
appointment to donate blood at the below location by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or
logging on to www.RedCrossBlood.org
.

ADDITIONAL INFO: All presenting donors will receive a
coupon for a free carton of Friendly’s Ice Cream

The American Red Cross Blood Services – Northeast Division
must distribute approximately 3,000 units of blood each day just to meet the
basic needs of area patients.  Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16
with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good
health may be eligible to donate blood.  High school students and donors 18
years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight
requirements.  Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form
of positive ID when you come to donate.

It is with great delight that I announce that Rhonda Nyman
has accepted the unanimous nomination of the caucus of Democratic Town
Committees of Hanover, Rockland and Norwell to be their nominee for the office
of State Representative of the Fifth Plymouth District.  Rhonda will be
running for the seat previously held by her husband, Bob.  The primary
election is on September 14th and the general election is on
November 2nd, with the winner of that election taking office in
January 2011.

Hanover High students and their teachers got together last
year and put together a suggested (not required) summer reading list.  Dr.
Raab, HHS Principal, was kind enough to forward it to me after I received a
related request from a reader.  After taking a few minutes to read through it,
I am here to tell you that it’s a great list!  I forwarded it to my
kids…and then got to thinking that we are surely not the only ones who
will appreciate this information.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Department of Public Works sent along the following
information this afternoon.  Effective immediately, and until further
notice, residents are required to limit outside watering of lawns, plantings
and gardens to odd numbered homes on odd numbered days and even numbered homes
on even numbered days between 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. –
9:00 p.m. daily with hand held hoses only.  Use of sprinklers is
prohibited.

Further details regarding violations of this policy or how
private wells are to be labeled will be forthcoming via a snail mail letter
sent to residents this week.

DPW
Superintendent Victor Diniak added the following further comments:  “People
may ask how we are in such a tight spot given the 18 inches of rain we had in
March.  Unfortunately, most of that water has drained away, finding its
way through the network of rivers and streams out to the ocean.  The level
of water in the Town’s wells isn’t too bad for this time of year. 
Unfortunately, the system demand has been absolutely crazy, overwhelming our
ability to pump the water out of the ground quick enough.  We are
currently using water at a rate that is well beyond the safe yield of our
aquifer.  If we don’t reduce demand now, we cannot guarantee water will be
available as the summer progresses.”

“The
Town’s aquifer is like a big bathtub filled with gravel.  The water we
withdraw from that bathtub needs to be replenished through precipitation. 
Unfortunately, a drive around town will show that despite the occasional late
afternoon downpours we have had, lawns are indeed browning up which is an
indicator that we have not had enough rain.  The state has a variety of
rules that force towns to live within their water means so as not to pump the
rivers and streams dry.  We are at a point where we need to live up to
those rules.”

for Friends of Julie!  Wow!  Friends
of Julie is a non-profit organization
which was set up by the Porzio family to raise funds for parents with late
stage cancer and their children.  The Fund gives directly to the patient
to enhance quality of life during treatment, therefore allowing the patient to
focus their energy on spending quality time with their family.&n bsp; For

SUMMER RAFFLE BASKETS ARE NOW UP AT THE LIBRARY:

Here’s another great reason to go to the library this
summer.  On June 28th, the Friends of the John Curtis Library
put up our summer raffle baskets which will be displayed at the downstairs
circulation desk at the library until Labor Day.  This year, we have two
beautiful baskets:  An American Girl basket (retail value of $270)
with this year’s new doll, Lanie, along with many related items including a
hand-made rabbit garden sculpture, and a Hanover basket (retail value of
$700) with a 3-month family membership to the South Shore YMCA in addition to
lots of gift certificates and donations from local businesses.  Please be
sure to look for these baskets at the library for a complete listing of all the
basket contents which include additional donations from the Toy Box, Storybook
Cove, Starland, Rockland Athletic Supplies, JC’s Ice Cream, Crossroads Cafe
& Deli, Go-Go’s Cafe & Catering, Dunkin Donuts, The Cleaner Spot
Dry Cleaners, Mass Lottery, and the Blampieds (hand-sculpted garden
ornament).  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and may be purchased at the
library during regular library hours until Labor Day.  Buy often and buy
lots!  We will draw the winning tickets immediately after Labor Day. 
All proceeds from this event will benefit future library programs and
acquisitions.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I could not possibly put the past three days into words that
would honor the man appropriately or adequately.  The Town of Hanover, no,
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, laid Bob Nyman to rest this afternoon. 
In the process, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of men, women and children paid
their last respects to a man of the people, a genuinely good-hearted soul, who
loved life and loved his family and friends.  He clearly loved his job,
too.  He served the people of Hanover, and also Rockland and Norwell, and
we said our good-byes today.  It was far too soon.

His daughters Kristy and Kara were eloquent and funny and
emotional (the apple does not fall far from the tree).  Rhonda was a
picture of grace.  Chris, and the stories about her, were priceless. 
Tommy Finneran was his usual distinctive yet common self, and all at the same
time.  The governor and a senator, and countless other officials, honored
him with their attendance.  Father Chris brought credit and a welcoming presence
to St. Mary’s at our saddest hour.  There were so many people
there.  So many that were familiar, and so many unknown to me, but we were
all connected by Representative Robert J. Nyman.

That common thread bound us.  We were all touched…somehow…by
the man we called Bobby.  He served us with extraordinary dignity and
remarkable pleasure.  All politics were local, and for him, they weren’t
even (really) politics, they were just a way of life.

Thank you for sharing your husband and father, Rhonda,
Kristy and Kara.  We were lucky to know him.  We were all blessed by
his short life. 

May you rest in peace, Bobby.

Local Partnership Committee cordially invite you to a Dedication Ceremony for
the new home of Kathy Remes and Family to be held at 126 Walnut Street in
Hanover on Sunday, July 11th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  

They will recognize the people whose dedication, generosity,
and hard work fulfilled the dream of homeownership for this family as they
officially present the homeowners with the keys.  Tours of the home and
refreshments will follow the ceremony.  The prayers, presence and generosity of
