The
library’s annual spelling bee will take place on Friday, July 2nd at
11:00 a.m. in the library’s large meeting room.  As has been done in the
past, the bee will be divided into two sections, ages 13 and under and ages 14
and older.  Prizes will be awarded to the top three spellers in each category
and the first place contestants will have their names engraved on the library’s
spelling bee trophies.

So,
brush up on your spelling and plan to attend the 24th annual
spelling bee at the library!  Refreshments will be served.

teens can join in the summer reading fun at the John Curtis Free Library
beginning (today as I write this) Monday, June 28th.  Prizes may be
earned each week by playing Book Bingo and/or by posting a book, music, or
movie review on our John Curtis Free Library/YA Facebook page. Also, join us on
July 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for the YA Game Night!  The
fun includes Wii, Dance-Dance Revolution, pizza and chances to win prizes.  Registration

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Looking
to get your kids out of the heat and do something fun?  Drop in for a
couple of FREE book-making events at the John Curtis Free Library.  On
Wednesday, July 14th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., we’ll be
making a book about animals.  On Wednesday, August 11th from 1:00
– 3:00 p.m., we’ll be putting together a book about vehicles.  Alison
Palmucci, the former art teacher at the Center/Sylvester School (and the new
art teacher at Cedar School), will be on hand to provide you with the name of
an animal (July) or vehicle (August) to draw.  All the pages
submitted by Hanover children will be laminated and made into books which will
be donated to the children’s room for all kids to read.  Stay for 20
minutes or the full 2 hours to do your drawing (parents should not leave
the library).  This event is recommended for children ages 5 and up.  Can’t
make the drop-in times?  Pages can also be made on your own the week
following the events.  Just ask a children’s librarian for a
card with the name of an animal (July) or vehicle (August) on it.  Cards
will be available until the supply of 50 runs out (no more than 2 drawings per
child, please).  This event is funded by the Friends of the John Curtis
Free Library thanks to town support.  Please contact Tracy Marchetti with

Funeral arrangements for State Representative Robert J.
Nyman are as follows:

A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday July 1, 2010 at
11:00 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Church, Hanover.  Visitation will be held on
both Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. in the Hanover Town Hall,
550 Hanover Street. Burial will be in the Hanover Center Cemetery.  In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Howie Nyman Memorial Scholarship Fund,
P.O. Box 1101, Hanover, or the Cardinal Cushing Center, 400 Washington Street,
Hanover.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I announce the
sudden passing of our beloved State Representative from the Fifth Plymouth
District, Mr. Robert J. Nyman.  While Bob was certainly a public figure
and will be missed by so many of us, please join me in respectfully recognizing
the incredibly difficult time this surely is for his wife Rhonda, his daughters
Kristy and Kara, and his mother Chris.  Our thoughts and prayers are with
all of the Nyman family.  Please know that we loved Bobby, too.

available when they are known.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I am pleased to share some breaking news just in from the
Democratic Town Committee’s Carol Franzosa!  Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick will be making his second visit to our
little town this Saturday, June 26th (tomorrow as I write this) from
1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. at Hanover Day.  Come to B. Everett Hall Field and enjoy
this opportunity to see and perhaps meet our governor up close and personal.

This is only the second time a sitting governor has been to
Hanover in my memory.  Governor Patrick also came to Hanover for a public forum
back in March of 2009 at the John Curtis Library.  Don’t miss this
chance!

Every now and then a local business provides a terrific and
free community service to the Town of Hanover.  While I usually request that
businesses patronize traditional media outlets (I still like reading the paper,
and they need the ad revenue!), efforts such as the one mentioned below simply need
to be passed along!  Special thanks to Hanover resident Maryanne Ridge for sharing
this information with me…and therefore with all of us!

Boston Bowl Hanover has joined forces with bowling alleys across
the country to provide children everywhere with two free strings of bowling PER
DAY all summer long!  Yes, you read that right, two games a day…free.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This
summer, Hanover Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups, garden clubs, baseball
teams, neighborhoods, friends, or anybody who wants to has the opportunity to
team up and join Hanover’s “Water Challenge”, sponsored by
the Town of Hanover in conjunction with the Greenscapes program at the North
and South Rivers Watershed Association.  The winning team will earn $500 for
the charity of their choice, and will learn some valuable water-saving tips
during the challenge. 

Greenscapes
Manager and NSRWA Communications Director Debbie Cook said, “The Water
Challenge basically is a contest between teams to see which team can use the
least amount of water per person between July 15 and September 30. The most
water-conserving team will win $500 for the charity of their choice.”
Teams can be any size beyond a minimum of 5 households. Individuals who want to
participate can join the Greenscapes team.

Every
few weeks during the contest, each team will receive water-saving tips to help
lower water consumption. Cook said, “I think everyone will be a winner,
whether they win the $500 or not, because they hopefully will all save money on
their water bills.”
