Dear fellow Hanoverians:

With the days growing warmer, more of us are opening our
windows and doors…as we should!  The Hanover Police Department
respectfully reminds you to close and lock all windows and doors when you leave
your house.  Traditionally, the number of house break-ins increases this
time of year with the warmer weather.  Let’s see if we can reverse
that trend here in Hanover.

As always, if you see anything suspicious in your
neighborhood…unfamiliar vehicles, unusual people, please call 911 and let
the HPD check on the situation.  In a non-emergency situation, you can
also call the Police Business Line at (781) 826-3231.

Phoenix Lodge, a Masonic Lodge, has been a part of the
Hanover community since 1874. We are involved in supporting a number charities
which help people locally.

Our breakfast is intended to provide a comfortable
atmosphere where family and friends can gather and enjoy a good breakfast that
is relatively inexpensive, spend time enjoying each other’s company and
not be rushed.

Our breakfast is a source of funds for the lodge to support
the various charitable activities in which we are engaged, such as the local
food banks, our Angel Fund, our Red Cross Blood Drive, South Shore Vo-Tech Scholarships,
Habitat for Humanity, Rainbow and Demolay.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

At Town Meeting on Monday, May 3rd, the residents
of Hanover voted a municipal budget of $45,601,152 to pay for the general and
reserve fund expenses for the town in fiscal year 2011.  It was a
unanimous vote.

In a separate meeting also on the evening of May 3rd,
but just prior to Town Meeting, members of the Board of Selectman voted to further
reduce the town’s projected expenditures for FY ’11.  Budgets
for the Police Department, Fire Department, Department of Municipal Inspections
and Selectmen were reduced.  The Selectman proposed to cut specific
budgetary line items and positions from the aforementioned budgets, including
the Fire Prevention Officer, Personnel Administration, a clerk in the
Department of Municipal Inspections, and secretarial time in the Police and
Fire Departments.  The total dollar amount to be cut in FY ’11 was
$119,000 and $239,000 in FY ’12.

This matter is due to be discussed again at a meeting of the
Board of Selectmen on Monday, May 24th that begins at 7:00 p.m. in
Town Hall.  This particular agenda item may or may not be taken up later
in the meeting due to other business before the Selectmen.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The
Hanover Emergency Food Pantry thanks the town for the U.S. Postal Workers
Annual Food Drive.

Saturday
May 8th, turned gloomy and gray when the sun hid behind the clouds
and then it began to rain.  Well, we not only had rain, but thunderstorms!  What
a day!  It never dampened the spirit of the event though.

All
our drivers and gatherers went out with their routes in hand with sunny
expectations.  All the sorters and stockers worked with wet bundles (double and
triple wrapped to save the generous donations) from the good citizen of
Hanover.  We thank each and every person who helped make this happen.  We had
volunteers ranging from senior citizens to young students and every age in between
making this event a huge success.

Later
in the afternoon the clouds parted, the sun came out, and some good souls “just
came by” to pitch-in!  What a great feeling to know that our town’s
citizens can come through with flying colors year after year.  We even had
several people come back after their own day’s events to help clean up.  (No
easy task with all the wet packaging left over.)

Everything
went so well that we were done by 6:00 p.m.  We packed the shelves and the back
room.  It was truly a magnificent day.

Our
thanks also go out to the U.S. Postal Workers who did so much to help our
pantry.  What a great effort on their part.  Nothing would have happened
without them. 

Summer
is our slow season for contributions since town-wide groups and organizations
stop meeting then.  For the past several years, the Postal Workers Food Drive
has made the difference in being able to supply our clients during this time. 
We are extremely grateful to all for all they have done.

If
your group stops meeting for the summer, any donations you wish to make to the
pantry can be brought to the First Baptist Church, located at the corners of
Webster and Main Street, Mondays between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Cub Scout Pack 37 and Pack 39 will be holding a
joint sign-up for all new scouts this coming Tuesday, May 25th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the
John Curtis Library. 
Scouting involves a variety of family activities and is a great way to make new
friends, learn about good citizenship and have a good time.  Each year
scouts are able to participate in den and pack meetings, flag ceremonies,
camping, a fishing derby, a parade, Pinewood Derby car races, snow tubing, a
campout at the Brockton Rox, and much, much more.

We are looking for any interested boys who will be entering 1st
through 5th grade.  Come to the John Curtis Library next
Tuesday night to learn more and to join the fun!

The Hanover Parents Music Club (HPMC)–a parent group that supports the K-12
music programs in the Hanover Schools–is having their final fund-raiser for
the year.  It is easy to participate!  Simply eat at Panera Bread in
Hanover (or get take-out) on this Wednesday, May 19th between 3:00 –
8:00 p.m.  A percentage of net sales will be donated to HPMC.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Join the Hanover Open Space Committee (OSC) for a hike
through Hanover’s “gem” this coming Saturday, May 22nd,
9:00 a.m. at Luddam’s Ford.  Explore this recaptured parkland with a
knowledgeable local guide. This wonderful 4.5 mile trail loop passes through
Pembroke, Hanson and Hanover public trails.  View pictures and
descriptions of the expansive former industrial site located on the current
park and fish ladder. The walk includes rugged terrain & challenging
hills.  Please wear shoes with good tread & support.  We advise
you to bring bug spray with DEET. Walk will begin from the parking lot on the
Hanover side of the falls.

Additional upcoming Open Space events:

June 19th, 9:00 a.m. Walk at the Bog Iron trails
between Broadway, Willow Street and Hanover Street

July 10th, 9:00 a.m. Canoe from Luddam’s
Ford Boat Launch.  Contact Hanover Parks and Rec to register,
781-826-7529.  Event limited to 15 boats.

The Hanover OSC was chartered to ensure that the town’s
rural character is maintained and enhanced both through protection of existing
resources and acquisition of new properties.  It is responsible for planning
and facilitating the improvement of open space, enhancing access to open space,
and raising awareness of land use issues.  The OSC is also interested in
protecting land that is environmentally sensitive, could be used for passive
recreation, or is important for conserving the look and feel of the town. 
Our goal is to retain the natural beauty and heritage of the town we live in
and love.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover
will hold its biennial public plant sale on Saturday, May 22, 9:00 a.m.
– 12:00 p.m. at Riley Hall, First Congregational Church, 515
Hanover Street.  The sale will feature a huge collection of select plants
from member gardens, which are some of the finest gardens across the South Shore. 
Everything will be sold at affordable prices, including easy care daylilies in
glorious colors, iris, hosta, astilbe and other hardy shade plants, ornamental
grasses, ground covers, shrubs and much more.  Among the daylilies offered will
be the big, bold, yellow Mary Todd daylily featured on some of the town’s
traffic islands.  The public is invited to come early for the best plant
selection, and urged to bring plant trays, crates and boxes to carry purchases
home.

This year, in addition to plants,
the Walnut Hill Club will be selling a decorated tote bag created by the
club’s recycling committee. This is a large, sturdy, grocery bag featuring the Entering
Hanover sign with morning glories twining over it.  It is washable, hand
painted, 100% cotton canvas, capable of handling loads up to 60 lbs, perfect
for trips to the grocery store, beach, etc.  Cost of the ‘Hanover’
bag:  $10/each or 3 for $25.
