Clean up day at the Stetson House

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Help keep Hanover beautiful; bring your rakes and clippers! Each year
volunteers provide a service to help make our Stetson House in the center of
town look its best. The date this year is Saturday, April 24th from 9:00
a.m. to noon. (Rain date is May 1!)

The Friends of the Stetson House guarantee fresh air, exercise, good people
meet and work with, and a sense of accomplishment and community spirit.

Sophomore Class On-line Auction

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover High School Class of 2012 is holding an online auction right

It opened for bids on April 14th and will remain open until midnight, April
30. Items being auctioned off include weekend getaways, a Tiffany & Co.
Bracelet, Red Sox Tickets, tutoring, and much more. The website is:
http://sites.google.com/a/hanoverschools.org/auction/ , or you can find a
link on the Hanover High School website. Make sure to check in frequently
because the class officers will be updating the high bid amounts each night.

All the money raised will be used for the class’s various activities
including prom, graduation caps and gowns, and the senior banquet. Check it
out.I am so impressed with the website alone! They’ve got some great items
to bid on, too. For more information, please contact

Two year term Selectman candidate Joe O’Brien

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The race is on! As mentioned in this space previously, this year’s race for
Selectman is complicated, so I am looking forward to providing non-biased
and general information on all the candidates. It might not answer all of
your questions, but it will start the conversation and allow you to become
an educated voter. After soliciting all of the candidates, ATOTW has heard
from the first candidate for Selectman and I am pleased to provide the
following campaign information:

Joseph P. O’Brien is running for the two year term for Selectman at the May
8th Town Election. Joe and his wife Kathie, long-time Center/Sylvester
Secretary, have resided on Maplewood Drive for the past 26 years. All five
of their children attended Hanover Schools and were active in sports and
various activities.

A further introduction to Joe O’Brien and why he is running for the two year
term for Selectman may be found here:
http://www.joeobrien.info/uploads/Letterhead_Final.pdf . When asked what is
distinctive about his candidacy, Joe states, "my professional board
experience and service as a former member of the School Committee and the
Town Manager Form of Government Committee make me uniquely qualified as a
candidate for the Board of Selectman." Joe O’Brien’s campaign website home
page may be found at www.joeobrien.info. Joe O’Brien’s professional and
civic experience is elucidated here:
http://www.joeobrien.info/uploads/Campaign_Brochure_-_Final_Draft.pdf .

Summer soccer, agility and boot camps

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have written previously about the Shea twins of Hanover.great students,
fine young men, and simply outstanding soccer players. Ryan and Matt have
risen to the challenge of Division 1 soccer at Boston University and
continue to represent their hometown of Hanover soooo well. They and we
have much to be proud of!

I am therefore delighted to feature their upcoming summer camps here on
ATOTW which are now in their fourth year and continue to grow and expand.
Their camps are sponsored by Hanover Parks and Rec (which is why I am
cross-promoting them) and sound like they are going to be FABULOUS! I will
send more details as they unfold, but in the meantime, they just sent me the
links to their three new websites, as follows:

Champion Soccer Camp

http://www.wix.com/rshea8/Champion-Soccer-Camp

Alumni Speed and Agility Camp
http://www.wix.com/rshea8/alumni-speed–agility-camp-hanover

Adult Boot Camp
http://www.wix.com/rshea8/hanover-adult-boot-camp NEW THIS
YEAR!

My son LOVED Champion Soccer Camp last summer, and Ryan is one of my
daughter’s favorite Park and Rec counselors, so I can personally attest to
how much your children will enjoy "hangin’" with the Shea boys this summer.
J Add to it the fact that they and their staff are incredibly talented
athletes and you have a winning combination for young and old alike.

Food pantry volunteers needed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Postal Workers Annual Food Drive is almost here again! It will be held
Saturday, May 8, 2009. There will be a combination of food drive volunteers
and postal service workers making the rounds. The Hanover Food Pantry is in
serious need of volunteers on that day again this year. What better way to
support residents of our town in need? Please consider volunteering at the
food pantry! It is also a great way for those who need service hours to
accrue some time for a good cause.

The good folks at the Hanover Food Pantry need:

* Drivers and gatherers (beginning as early as 10:00 a.m. or anytime up
through 3:00 p.m.) to go out on assigned routes for food pick-up. Take a
long route or a short route, no matter what; your help will be appreciated.
You’ll be given a map, and you will bring the food you gather back to the
pantry.

* Sorters to be stationed at the pantry from 11:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.,
in two hour shifts. Feel free to stay as long as you like. The food pantry
will supply water, soda, coffee or tea and PB&J sandwiches, along with hard
work and a good time.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to drive and pick up or sort donations can do so
by emailing Sally Lovett Boutin at kidsense@comcast.net or calling her at
781-826-6485, or on her cell at 781-799-0053.

Remember that all collected food stocks the shelves of our very own Hanover
Food Pantry for our friends and neighbors in need. The food that is gathered
each year at the Postal Workers Annual Food Drive sees those in need through
the summer when the churches, civic organizations, schools and other groups
stop or slow their regular collections. Your support will be greatly
appreciated. Regardless of your ability to volunteer to help that day,
please don’t forget to donate your food to the town-wide drive on May 8th!

Open Space trail and field clean up this weekend

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Join the Hanover Open Space Committee (OSC) this Saturday, April 17th for a
trail and field clean up at 9:00 a.m. at the "Stasiluk Nava Property",
located on the northwest side of Center Street between Myrtle Street and
Winter Street. Please bring clippers and gloves, as the group will clear
brush, trim, and remove deadwood. You’ll get a chance to preview the
emerging trails on this newly acquired property. Once the team validates
the current trail lines, a local Eagle scout candidate will be organizing a
group to complete the project. Parking is available on the property, and
along the property’s stonewall. Download a printable map of Hanover’s Open
Space property:
http://www.hanover-ma.gov/maps-gis/2009-os-map/Hanover-2009-Open-Space-Map.p
df

The Hanover Open Space Committee would like to thank the community for its
wonderful support and participation both before and after last month’s
Fireworks Trail walk. Upcoming walks are planned for May 22nd, 9:00 a.m. at
Luddam’s Ford, and June 19th, 9:00 a.m. at the Bog Iron trails between
Broadway, Spring Street and Hanover Street.

Stay informed about activities and volunteer opportunities: you can find the
OSC on Facebook: Hanover Open Space, the web:
http://www.hanover-ma.gov/open-space.shtml, or join their Yahoo Group:
HanoverOpenSpace. In addition, the OSC wants for input from the equestrian
community in town. Please let them know if you can contribute your
specialized knowledge and needs to our volunteer committee.

The Hanover OSC was chartered to ensure that the town’s rural character is
maintained and enhanced both through protection of existing resources and
acquisition of new properties. It is responsible for planning and
facilitating the improvement of open space, enhancing access to open space,
and raising awareness of land use issues. The OSC is also interested in
protecting land that is environmentally sensitive, could be used for passive
recreation, or is important for conserving the look and feel of the town.
Their goal is to retain the natural beauty and heritage of the town we live
in and love.

The OSC would also like to hear from you if you are simply interested in
more information on the work of the Committee. The Open Space Committee
meets regularly on the 1st Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Hanover Town
Hall.
