Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Saturday, December 5th, at 7 p.m. (rain date is December 6th) the Smith
Family is hosting their 6th annual tree lighting for juvenile diabetes.
Come enjoy the lights, music, raffles and treats. They are located at 428
King Street in Hanover.

Their son Michael was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes on December 9th,
2003. Since then, the Smith Family has lit a Christmas tree in their yard
(along with lots of other decorations and lights) to help raise money and
make people aware of Type 1 diabetes. So far they have raised approximately
$15,000 with the help of lots of family, friends and kind and generous
residents of Hanover. Each donation gets us closer to finding a cure. 100%
of the proceeds from the tree lighting will go to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation).

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease. In a child with Type 1 diabetes
(juvenile diabetes) the pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone
necessary to sustain life. Without insulin the sugar in the blood can’t be
used. It builds up in the bloodstream even while the body is starved for
energy. A person with Type 1 diabetes must take one or more injections of
insulin daily to stay alive. Insulin, however, is not a cure. It is only a
means of controlling the disease.

So bundle up and come enjoy the lights, music and atmosphere and get in the

left, along with a couple of programs not in the last booklet. To register

CPR Training- Town Hall

This course is AHA certified and offers a comprehensive program to
train the individual and will also include training with the use of an AED
(Automated External Defibrillator). Get your CPR certification in just one
night.

Class Dates 12/1/09

Class Fee: $50.00 6:00 to 9:00 PM

WINTER ZUMBA – Hanover Police Boys Club

Offset those holiday treats and festive calories by attending a Zumba class
this winter. Zumba fuses hypnotic latin and international rhythms, with
easy-to-follow moves, to create a dynamic fitness program that will blow you
away. Why tolerate a boring workout routine when you can have a blast
dancing your way to a healthier you? Join Hanover resident, Jennifer Lloyd,
at the Hanover Boys Club on Tuesday nights. This workout is for all fitness
and experience levels.you’ll see, there is nothing to be afraid of. Feel

Winter Session: December 1 – February 9 (no session class on December 29)

This 10-week session is $80 (or $10 per class to drop in). Please make

DIGITAL CAMERA WORK SHOP- Just in time for your holiday shopping, Hanover
Parks & Rec is offering a two hour workshop designed to help you choose the
right digital camera for your needs. A selection of digital cameras will be
on hand for participants to handle and test, and a professional photographer
will be offering advice and answering questions about digital camera
products. The Rec Department is working with a local camera shop to offer
discounts on camera purchases. The workshop will be held Wednesday evening,
December 2nd at the Town Hall from 7-9pm. The cost is $20 per participant

Lego Days- John Curtis Free Library

The hugely popular Lego Days program is back!! Children get
to have fun playing with Legos and building cool things while parents have
fun with an afternoon to themselves. This program is designed for Elementary
School aged children.

Cost: $ 7 per day

Date: December 8th, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

( We will also be offering a FULL Lego Day 8-4 on Martin Luther King
Day!!!!!!!!!!! Stay tuned for our Winter/Spring Brochure)

Babysitting Course- Police Station

This one day course is designed to assist 5th-7th graders in
being better babysitters and knowing the do’s and don’ts of being home
alone. The course will cover information on child development, playing with
younger children, basic first aid, fire safety and prevention, and the
overall responsibilities of babysitting.

Instructor: Kimberly Cleary, a registered nurse and mom.

Limited to 18 pre-registered students, fee $15.

Cost: $15

Date: Saturday December 5th 9 a.m. – 12 noon

Holiday Party -Town Hall

This Holiday Party is designed for elementary aged children
(k-4). Children come to the Town Hall for some fun Holiday music and games
then watch a fun Holiday movie. Parents also get some much deserved time off
while their children are supervised by the great Park and Rec staff.

Cost: $10

Date: December 18th 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Winter Teen Extreme

Winter Vacation Camp

A one week program designed for students in grades five through eight. Will
be held during the week of Christmas Break (December 28th through December
31st). On non field trip days, the students will be at Hanover Boys Club
(behind the Town hall); kids can participate in arts and crafts, sports,
board games, and many other activities. The program will be 9:00am until
2:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday. Times of the field trips may vary.
Wednesday may also include a trip to Strawberry Valley for Sledding (Weather
Permitting).

Tuesday December 29, 2009:
Snow Tubing at Amesbury Sports Park
Amesbury Sports Park provides one of the fastest-growing winter recreational
activities at the largest tubing park in New England! Seven lanes are
maintained by Amesbury’s experienced grooming fleet, the park provides ideal
tubing conditions for thrill seekers of all ages.
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 pm

Thursday December 31, 2009:
Rock Climbing at Carabiner’s Indoor Climbing
328 Parker Street, New Bedford MA
Students will be provided with rental gear and a day passes for indoor
climbing. Carabiner’s created a brand new facility designed from the ground
up to be one of the finest indoor climbing facilities in the world with over
35,000 square feet of climbing.
Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Registration begins immediately. This program WILL fill up fast so please
register ASAP. There will only be 50 spots available.

$110 for the whole week of activities

S K I I N G

Ski Lessons- Blue Hills MUST BE BOOKED BY 12/20

Once again this winter Hanover Parks and Recreation will be offering ski
lessons at Blue Hills. Children age Kindergarten- 6th Grade will be
eligible. Busses will leave from B. Everett Hall Field at 3:00 PM on Tuesday
afternoons, making stops at Cedar School as well as the Hanover Middle
School for children in the Afterschool Programs. If you wish to have your
child picked up at an afterschool program please contact the Parks and
Recreation Department immediately so arrangements can be made.

90 minutes lessons will begin at 4PM. Busses will then depart from Blue
Hills at 5:45 and arrive back in Hanover at B. Everett Hall Field at 6:30.

Children can choose to bring or rent equipment unless they participate in an
afterschool program, in which they can only rent. Helmets are not a
requirement however they are STRONGLY suggested.

Classes will take place every Tuesday from January 5th- February 2nd. If the
weather does not cooperate classes will continues on February 10th and 22nd.
(ASK ABOUT ADDING A SEASONS PASS)

Cost: $220 without

$295 with rentals

Open Skiing- Blue Hills MUST BE BOOKED BY 12/20

This year Hanover Parks and Recreation will have an open ski program for
children who are comfortable skiing alone without supervision. Busses will
leave from B. Everett Hall Field at 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoons, making
stops at Cedar School as well as the Hanover Middle School for children in
the Afterschool Programs. If you wish to have your child picked up at an
afterschool program please contact the Parks and Recreation Department
immediately so arrangements can be made.

With this program your child receives a season’s pass to Blue Hills, so
he/she can also use this pass all winter long! The bus will arrive back at
B. Everett Hall field at 6:30pm

Skating Lessons- Plymouth (Transportation included) Skaters
are taught basic coordination, balance and maneuverability on the ice in a
weekly 40 minute group lessons

Busses will B. Everett Hall Field at 4pm, lessons will start at 4:40 and
will continue until 5:20. Busses will then depart from the Plymouth Rink at
5:30 and arrive back in Hanover at B. Everett Hall Field at 6:00

8 Thursdays starting January 7th

Cost: $160 for 8 Weeks

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The holidays are here, and for those of you who wish to show your
appreciation to your child’s teacher, consider purchasing a Golden Apple
recognition card. Sponsored by the Hanover Foundation for Educational
Enrichment, this program was created to honor any Hanover educator,
including teachers, aides, administrators, coaches or any person who assists
in the education of your child.

For a donation of $10 to the HFEE, you will receive a Golden Apple Award
card to give to the person of your choosing. This year’s card was made by
Martha’s Vineyard pastel artist Chetta Kelley, who is an HFEE supporter and
whose grandchildren attend Hanover Public Schools. Just complete the inside
of the card with your personal information, seal it in the enclosed
envelope, and present it to the staff person you wish to honor.

Your Golden Apple donation to the Foundation supports educational enrichment
programs and will impact many students in the Hanover school system. This
year the Foundation awarded over $15,000 in grants to teachers in all grades
of the Hanover Public Schools.

Golden Apple cards will be sold at the HFEE booth at the Craft Fair on
December 5 held at the Hanover Middle School. Cards may also be purchased by

We came together as a community last year and supported the new high school
in a 3488 to 925 vote. We can and should continue to support the children
of Hanover and our high school. But first, we need to stop pointing fingers
and slinging mud over the recent injunction. Instead, let’s look at the
facts and encourage each other to come to the best solution possible.

Hanover Brownie Troop 80267 will be collecting new or gently used shoes and
boots for children ages infant to 4 years for the Mary-Martha Learning
Center in Hingham. The Mary-Martha Learning Center is a residential
educational program for young women and children who would otherwise be
homeless. The center focuses on women ages 18 to 24 years who have not
received their high school diploma and who have children ages newborn to 4
years. At Mary-Martha, they are provided with training and services for an
improved future.

Donations can be dropped off in boxes outside of either Brownie Leader’s
home: Lee Ann Arbia at 15 Waterford Drive or Ann Cox at 70 Buffum Road.
The shoes and boots will be collected from now until December 15th. The
girls will collect and sort the shoes and boots and present them to the
residents at the Mary-Martha Learning Center on December 18th. Brownie
Troop 80267 thanks you for your support with this community service project.

I don’t know about your kids, but when my kids were that age, they outgrew
their shoes LONGGGGGG before they were even close to being well-used or worn
out. So, clean out your closets and head over to Waterford Drive or Buffum

INFORMATION NIGHT DECEMBER 2, 2009

The Hanover Lions Club will be holding an information night for all
individuals interested learning more about Lions activities and becoming
members. The event will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2009 at the John
Curtis Free Library from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Lions International was founded in 1917 and is comprised of 1.35 million
members in 194 countries worldwide. They answer the needs that challenge the
communities of the world. Lions tackle tough problems like blindness, drug
abuse prevention, and diabetes awareness which is the major cause of adult
blindness.

Established in 1961, the Hanover Lions Club follows the Lions motto of "We
Serve".

The Hanover Lions serve in many ways – from hands on involvement in
community activities such as health screening services (for glaucoma, eye,
blood pressure, and hearing), a speech contest for High School students, a
Peace Poster Contest for Middle School students, Santa’s yearly arrival at
the library, to eye glass and hearing aide donations to needy individuals.

Our fund raising activities include a golf tournament, pancake breakfast,
weekly meat raffles, and a Christmas raffle. All money raised goes to
charities selected by the club each year. Our charitable interests address
local, state, national, and international needs. Local donations included
Hanover scout troops, Hanover Food Pantry, veterans and families at
Christmas, Hanover Council on Aging, Hanover Visiting Nurse Association,
North River Collaborative, Scholastic Awards night at the High School, and
the Massachusetts Lion Eye Research Fund, which annually provides close to
$1M in "seed" money for research into all fields of blindness and eye
related diseases. Last year, we donated over $15,000 to charitable causes.

The Hanover Lions Club meets at the Imperial Garden Restaurant on the 1st
and 3rd Tuesday of each month. If you are interested in learning more about

The Board of Selectmen will be meeting tonight in an emergency session at
6:00 p.m. at the Hanover Town Hall. The School Building Committee meeting,
previously scheduled to be held at the Salmond School, will now be held
tonight at the Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public,
and presumed to be on the agenda is the injunction that stopped work at the
high school last Friday.

It is possible that one or both meetings will become a closed "executive
session" and not open to the public. So please go there with that
understanding.

It takes three hours for an "Around Town on the Web" e-mail to be sent to
the entire distribution list because of the sheer size of the list of

Please join the community of Hanover as we gather together and "Raise the
Song of Harvest Home" at the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on Monday,
November 23rd @ 7:30 p.m. This year St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will host
the service, which will feature a choir representing the churches in town.
The Rev. Dr. Deborah Carter, Interim Pastor at the First Congregational
Church will offer the message, "The Gathering of the Nations." The offering
that evening will be given to support the Hanover Habitat for Humanity House
that is currently being built on Walnut Street. Fellowship will be held in
the parish hall following the service. Please join your friends and
neighbors as we gather to give thanks for all the blessing in our lives.
