Vote this Saturday

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I was planning to send this reminder out anyway, but
it’s even better that I got a supportive nudge from the Selectman’s
Office to do so!  J

The Selectmen’s Office would like to remind everyone that
Town Elections are being held this Saturday, May 9th at Hanover
High School from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

I will also add that if you know that you will not be able
to vote on Saturday, absentee ballots can be filled out at the Town
Clerk’s Office until noon on Friday the 8th.
That’s tomorrow as I write this, folks!

Volunteer to serve your town!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Just as with the changing (or re-electing!) of the guard that
comes with our annual town elections, the Town Moderator routinely makes
appointments (or re-appointments!) to several town-wide committees this time of
year.  Thanks to Moderator Doug Thomson for sending along the latest list of volunteer
appointed positions that are opening up and/or already open:

Capital Improvement Committee – long term
capital planning for the town

Community Preservation Committee –
projects to be funded by our Community Preservation Act funds

By-law Review Committee – management and
updating of the rules that govern our town

Parks and Recreation Committee – management
of all the fields and many of the recreation programs in town

Facilities Maintenance Study Committee –
studying the best system for long term care of all facilities in town

Please drop Doug a note at moderator@hanover-ma.gov if you are
interested or would like any further information.

Safety tips for Hanover residents and OUR kids

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This morning’s e-mail regarding the break-in in
Hanover prompted some excellent electronic discussion regarding safety issues
in Hanover.  Yesterday’s early release from school for our children
added another layer of implication, too.  What follows are some tips I
heard from fellow residents that I thought bear repeating for all of us:

·
Review as a family what to do in case of an
emergency…especially if an older child will be home alone.

·
Talk about who is generally home during the day
in your neighborhood with your kids…so they know who to call if they need
reassurance.

·
Do you and your children have 911 “In Case
of an Emergency” on speed dial?  Do your kids know your work and
cell numbers?  How about those neighbors’ numbers?  Are all
those numbers in their cell phone directories?

·
Encourage your kids to never go anywhere without
a buddy…even if they are only playing in the neighborhood.

·
The Hanover Parks and Recreation Babysitting
Course provides great “In Case of an Emergency” information for both
babysitters and older children who are given the freedom to stay home alone.
Contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 781-826-PLAY for future course
dates.

Now is the time to have those conversations with OUR kids.
As they say, an ounce of prevention…

Food Pantry donations out this Saturday

Dear
fellow Hanoverians:

As
mentioned in an earlier e-mail, the Postal Workers’ Food Drive will be
held on Saturday, May 9, 2009.  That’s this Saturday!  Please take a
moment first thing on Saturday to put some non-perishable food items in a bag
and place the bag by your mailbox.  Please double bag if it rains.  (If you’re
like me, and not very awake when you go out to get the paper on Saturdays, pack
your bag now and put it by the front door so that you trip on it on your way
out that morning.)

There
will be a combination of food drive volunteers and postal service workers
making the rounds beginning at 10:00 a.m. that day.  Remember that all
collected food stocks the shelves of our very own Hanover Food Pantry for our
friends and neighbors in need.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Anyone
still wishing to volunteer to sort donations can do so by e-mailing Sally
Lovett Boutin at kidsense@comcast.net.
They particularly still need some extra hands later in the afternoon on
Saturday.  It’s not too late to sign-up!  Thanks!

Important news from the HPD

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Congratulations to the Hanover Police Department for
apprehending a breaking and entering suspect yesterday after a manhunt across
town lasting several hours!  Residents are reminded that with the warm weather
and open windows, the risk of burglary increases.  I know we live in a
small town, but it is nevertheless prudent to lock your doors and latch your
windows when leaving your house.

Keep up the great work, HPD!

Town Meeting report, Day 2

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Day Two of Hanover’s Annual Town Meeting was yet
another exceptional study in debate and discourse.  Hanover Village
developers Jim O’Brien and Jim Rodriguez presented an interesting and complicated
article related to their stalled development on Route 53 that was ultimately
referred back for study, but that we will likely be discussing again in some
form or another at a future meeting.  Town Meeting agreed to reduce
parking lot requirements at the Hanover Mall, but refused to add a special
permit requirement for fences and corrals for animals or livestock that would
be less than the zoning bylaws might otherwise allow.  We also added regulations
regarding Body Art Establishments and Wind Turbines.

Never a dull moment at Town Meeting!  If you missed out
on the fun, plan now to re-join the discussion as of Article 44 at 7:00 p.m. on
Monday, May 11th at the high school gym.  Your attendance is
crucial!

Town Meeting report

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Special Town Meeting to close out FY ’09 business
and the first night of the Annual Town Meeting were not without sparks, passion
and good solid debate.  After over an hour and a half of deliberation, Town
Meeting approved Article 18, step one of the Town Manager proposal.  Two
vigorous amendments were proposed by the Board of Public Works and then a
former Selectman.  Both amendments failed.  The article passed in its
entirety as it is written in the warrant.  Step two of the Town Manager
proposal will be this Saturday, May 9th, with a vote on Question One.
If you are in favor of a Town Manager form of government, vote yes on Question
One; if you are opposed, vote no on Question One.

In other business, the town approved the recommendation of
the Advisory Committee of a FY 2010 budget of over $45 million.  I was
also personally pleased to hear the report of the newly constituted Energy
Advisory Committee.  It’s great to have fresh faces devote their
time and energies to the betterment of our town.  Their involvement was a
suitable book-end to the retirement of long-time Planning Board member Maryann
Brugnoli that was noted at the start of Town Meeting.  Congrats, Maryann; we
are ALL better for your devoted service and expert guidance over the past 24
years.

We concluded the evening with the passing of Article 23, and
will resume the Annual Town Meeting proceedings at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night at
the high school gymnasium.  See you then.

FW: Town Meeting begins Monday!

Town Meeting is in the HHS
Gymnasium, not the Auditorium.  The auditorium is sometimes used as an
overflow location for big meetings, or as a primary location for small
meetings.  On Monday, it will probably not be used at all.

Apologies for any confusion.
One of these days I will learn to not send e-mails on rainy days when my kids
(and their friends) are running rampant in the house!
