Dear fellow Hanoverians:

As the daughter of a small business owner, I could not let this week go by
without the following…

Let’s face it. Small businesses will struggle during these times of
COVID-19. So, instead of once a year after Thanksgiving, let’s make every
Saturday “Small Business Saturday”.

I stopped in to a small, locally owned restaurant on Thursday and picked up
my lunch. It was weird, not normal. There were two people behind the
register and one in the kitchen. Normally there’s close to twice that back
there. There was a guy waiting for his take-out order who stepped back the
requisite 6 feet as I walked in, and no one was seated. Normally the place
is packed with diners and there are several in line. I had called ahead,
and so my food was ready, and I paid with cash. I left the money on the
counter so the cashier could take it after she put her plastic gloves back
on. The whole thing was weird. How will they pay the rent?

I heard from a friend whose husband works at an oil delivery company who
was concerned about the fact that he had to keep delivering oil and making
house calls. He’s an essential service, so of course he’s still working,
but how do you stop that worry? You can’t. He’s a small business, and if
I know him, he’s proud to do his job despite the risks. How can I support
my friends?

I read Facebook posts from my now-closed local gym, and wondered if the
trainers were being paid to post the new on-line workouts, and did I need
to send them money anyway despite being closed? What about the local
Hanover-based people who weren’t posting the on-line workouts; how were
they being paid…or were they? How can I make a contribution?

And then there was the passing of George, an icon at the register at the
Hanover Shaw’s. I am heartbroken; he’s not going to thank me for putting
in my phone number any longer. Granted, Shaw’s isn’t a small business, but
please tell me they are taking care to mark his passing? He was a beloved
fixture and will be missed. How can I pay my respects?

C’mon Hanover. Join me in supporting our small businesses (and the large
ones who employ our beloved neighbors). Shop local. Keep six feet away,
sure. Find a way to support your local small businesses this Saturday (and
every day) despite the weirdness of COVID-19. Together we can do this!

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier reminded residents that 2020
Town of Hanover dog licenses are still available on-line, by mail, or at
Hanover Town Hall. The licensing period is January 1 – March 31, and a
$10 late fee applies beginning April 1. All dogs over the age of 6 months
are required by law to be licensed. The license is good for one year, and
costs $10 for spayed or neutered dogs, and $15 for intact dogs. Residents
over the age of 70 will be given a free license for their vaccinated dog
upon proof of the owner’s age.

In an effort to make this process easy for residents, there are several
ways to license your dog.
• The easiest way is on-line via a link on the Town Clerk’s section of
the Town of Hanover’s website, which is also here:

. Pay on-line without leaving the comfort of your home! Almost one-third
of Hanover residents now license their dogs on-line, and more folks surely
will given social distancing and COVID-19.
• Residents may also fill out the dog license application that is found
on the Town Clerk’s section of the Town of Hanover’s website at:

. This is the same application that was included in the census this year.
Completed forms may be mailed in with your payment, proof of current rabies
vaccination and proof of spaying or neutering (if you have not submitted
that information previously) to: Town Clerk’s Office, 550 Hanover Street,
Hanover, MA 02339, and your tag will be mailed back to you.
• As has always been the case, dog licenses may also be obtained at the
Town Clerk’s Office, but given COVID-19, the process is a little
different. Please bring the same paperwork – current rabies vaccination,
proof of spaying/neutering if you have not submitted that information
previously, and your money order or check payable to the Town of Hanover.
Put it all in an envelope addressed to the Town Clerk’s Office and
deposit it in the front door mail slot. We’ll mail your tag back to you.

Unlicensed dogs are subject to a minimum of a $25 fine, with an additional
$25 fine if unleashed and another fine of $50 if unvaccinated for rabies.
Don’t delay; get your dog’s license today! Late fees begin April 1st!

If you have questions or need more information about the licensing of your
dog in Hanover, please call the Town Clerk’s Office at (781) 826-5000

meg.pallotta@hanover-ma.gov . Kennel owners are encouraged to call or
e-mail, as their licensing process requires an inspection and other
additional reviews and paperwork.

I love how we’re coming together despite social distancing. :) I love how
reasonable you are when you call and ask for services at Town Hall. I love
that we’re supporting our first responders publicly and even just honking
and waving as they go by. I love the Facebook posts with schedule
suggestions for folks with kids at home instead of school. I love that the
IT folks in town have figured out remote access for Salmond School staff
and virtual/conference call Selectmen’s meetings. We can make this work,
Hanover. Wait, let’s be clear, we ARE making this work, Hanover! So proud
to be among you.

Today’s missive is regarding volunteers. There was an NPR broadcast over
the weekend that highlighted the fact that those who volunteer in times of
crisis and anxiety end up solving their own internal battles. So, let’s do

Town of Hanover COVID-19 Update 3/15/20

POSTED ON: MARCH 15, 2020 – 2:41 p.m.

The Town of Hanover was informed Sunday afternoon of the first resident
case testing presumptive positive (not yet verified by the CDC) for
COVID-19. The case appears to be the result of travel and it was not
contracted within the community. Based on what the Town currently knows,
the individual is doing well and took every responsible precaution to
self-isolate and mitigate exposure.

Hanover Town Hall Closure Information 3/15/20
POSTED ON: MARCH 15, 2020 – 9:42 a.m.
Effective immediately, March 15, 2020, Hanover Town Hall will be closed to
the public during regular business hours. While Town Hall is closed, staff
will be available via phone, email, and limited in-person interactions.
Plans to hold virtual committee and board meetings using remote technology
are being developed.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have hesitated to weigh in with updates regarding the impact of COVID-19
on our town because they seem to change daily, and sometimes within hours.
And, “Around Town on the Web”, while beloved, is older technology – that
takes 12 hours for one e-blast to be sent. That being said, I thought you
might appreciate an overview of some of the precautions that have been
taken and the related impacts to your daily schedule.

The Town of Hanover and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have declared a
state of emergency, and gatherings of over 250 people have been banned.

Hanover Schools announced Thursday that they would be closed on Friday, and
then Friday they announced that they would be closed for two weeks – up
through and including March 27th. I am sad for the HHS Hockey team
regarding their quest for the Garden that has been cancelled, but I hope
they hold their heads high as they wear the “Co-champion” crown. They
earned it! Spring sports have been pushed back to March 30th, at least.

The Hanover Senior Center closed Friday for an indefinite period of time.
In a statement, the good folks at the Council on Aging stated: “We are
100% committed to serving our senior population during this time of crisis;
to that end, the entire Community Services staff will be providing
transportation, delivering Meals on Wheels, making home visits, phone
calls, and house checks, and will hold appointments as needed at the COA
building.”

The Hanover John Curtis Library has also been closed as of 2:00 p.m.
Saturday, also for an indefinite period of time. The Library has

, and is assessing how to make at least some services available beginning
next week.

As of this writing (Saturday at 3:45 p.m.), Town Hall will be open on
Monday. As your Town Clerk, I look forward to continuing to serve you by
phone, e-mail and in-person. I know my colleagues feel the same. We are
here for you. Please don’t mind if we practice “social distancing” – and
stay 6 feet away from you rather than shake your hand. You should do the
same when you are out in public. The rabies vaccination clinic, previously
scheduled for 3/21, has been postponed. We are assessing the situation and
our options regarding Town Meeting on May 4th and the Town Election on May
9th.

Be safe, be smart, and take care of your loved ones, Hanover. Check on
your neighbors; who’s home, who’s not well? Who should you reach out to
after reading this e-mail? Not sure? Donate to the Hanover Food Pantry –
there are people staying home and losing wages who will need extra support.
Together we will get through this!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Brownie Troop 82281 members are working on earning their
Philanthropist badge. They will be partnering up with Hanover resident
Kathy Hassey who runs the Friday Night Supper program and Clothing Closet
for the homeless in Boston. The girls will be collecting new men’s
socks, underwear and tee shirts. There will be a collection box at the John
Curtis Library starting on Friday, March 6th and they will collect
donations for the month of March.

There will be a presentation by Barbara Eppich Struna, a Cape Cod resident
and international best selling author. She bases her tales on personal
experiences and includes her love of Cape Cod history and myths. Her novels
include The Old Cape House, The Old Cape Teapot, and The Old Cape Hollywood
Secret. Come listen to her fascinating stories!

On Monday, March 9th, the Hanover Foundation for Educational Enrichment
will be hosting a fundraiser at Chipotle at Derby Street from 4:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. Bring the attached flyer, show it on your phone, or mention that
you are there to dine for HFEE to make sure that 33% of your purchase will
be donated to HFEE.

Seniors, save your receipt from Chipotle and enter to win one of two free
HFEE graduation yard signs; one for a male and one for a female senior.
Receipts with your name and cell # can be placed in the entry box available
at the office.

The Foundation provides the Hanover School system with funding for
enrichment activities and materials which are currently outside of the
school system’s budget. To learn more about HFEE visit their website at
