Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The following is a notice from the Hanover Board of Health:
Hurricane Irene, a Category 3 storm (winds over 111 mph) as it slammed
into the Bahamas overnight Wednesday, is expected to impact
Massachusetts as early as this weekend. It is projected to potentially
pass through Massachusetts Sunday night into Monday morning as a
category 1 or 2 storm. Townspeople should be preparing for potential
power outages. Please refer to the tips listed at the end of this
e-mail for dealing with possible power outages.
The Hanover Emergency Response Team, which includes the Fire, Police,
Health, and Building Departments and the Department of Public Works,
has begun planning for any possibility including the need to open
emergency shelters at the new Hanover High School. Should sheltering
be necessary, volunteers will be needed to help staff the shelter and
provide support services within the shelter. Medical personnel
(including physicians, NP’s and nurses will be needed to assist with
triage and first aid if there is wide-spread wind damage and fallen
trees. If you are willing to volunteer your time to assist those less
fortunate, please contact the Hanover Board of Health at
health@hanover-ma.gov
.
How to prepare for a power outage:
· Check flashlights and portable radios; keep extra batteries on hand
· Fill spare containers with water; plan on stocking 1 gallon of
water per person per day
· Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings. Do not
open doors unnecessarily. Food can stay cold in a full refrigerator
for up to 24 hours and 48 hours in a well-packed freezer.
· Check with your pharmacist if you have medication that needs
refrigeration.
· Don’t forget your pets.
· Please consider checking on your elderly neighbors.
Refer to the Town of Hanover website posting “Be Prepared In Case Of
An Emergency” on the www.hanover-ma.gov
front page, and take a minute to review the four parts of the
“Hurricane Preparedness Series” that were sent on “Around Town on the
Web” over the past couple of weeks. If you don’t have the e-mails
handy, don’t forget that you can always check the ATOTW archives that
are found on the ATOTW website at http://www.atotw.com
. On a related note, a reader who tried to go back and access some
information from Part One wrote this morning and mentioned that one of
the links was broken. I did a little surfing and found some great
additional, similar and related information here:
