HFEE good news for all

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Each year around this time the Hanover Foundation for Educational Enrichment announces its grant award winners.  It ends up being a whole litany of good news for Hanover Schools, and one that I am delighted to share with you!  Read on!

At the end of this month, Hanover High School students will experience a spell-binding presentation called “Rachel’s Challenge”, which is designed to create something positive in the aftermath of the tragic events at Columbine High School. Parents and community will also participate in an evening program which conveys a hopeful message that we can all positively change the way we treat others. Later in the year, high school art teacher Janet Curley will begin offering students the opportunity to expand their creative output using three new potters’ wheels in her Three Dimensional Design class.

Hanover Middle School students will soon begin to gain deeper knowledge and understanding of design and engineering using new Lego Robotics computer software. This program fosters creativity, innovation and teamwork and enables students to construct and manipulate their Lego projects through a variety of hands on activities.  HMS musicians will also begin implementing Smart Music – a computer based practice tool that gives instant feedback to students to help develop their playing skills.

At the elementary schools, students will experience Fun with Fossils, a visit from the Amazing Hero, attend the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and explore the Star lab Portable Planetarium. All of these activities have been made possible through the Grant Awards Program sponsored by the Hanover Foundation for Educational Enrichment. The Foundation, founded in 1991 to seek creative solutions to school budget cuts, has awarded more than $200,000 in support of more than 150 grant projects throughout the schools. Grant awards for 2008-2009 are as follows:

The Foundation sincerely thanks the community for making these amazing opportunities and experiences available to our children. Due to the overwhelming support of our Spring Fling and South Shore Sampler fundraisers, as well as the wonderful response to our membership drive and annual mailing, the Foundation has been able to double its grant funding to the schools for the past two years. This year the Foundation received 23 grants, requesting more than $33,000.  The Foundation would also like to recognize our Grants Committee Chairpersons Heather Carr and Tammy Tedeschi for their time and dedication in coordinating the Grant Awards Program.
