H1N1 clinic update and important information

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Some astute readers of ATOTW sent follow-up questions about this Saturday’s
H1N1 flu clinic. I have been in close and constant contact with the Board
of Health and am happy to provide this additional information:

. Dosage requirements and/or notes from a child’s pediatrician are
NOT required for this clinic (as they have been in the past in traditional
seasonal flu clinics)

. A parent DOES need to sign consent for their child under the age of
18 to be vaccinated

. ALL children ages 6 months to 18 years old are eligible to be
vaccinated, not just those with underlying conditions such as asthma

. Children ages 9 and under will need to get two shots 28 days apart

. The clinic will be successful with the assistance of volunteers who
sign up by e-mailing health@hanover-ma.gov by 4:00 p.m. TODAY, 11/12.
Volunteers are asked to report by 9:30 a.m., park by the tennis courts, and
come in the front door. The Board of Health is firmly committed to
vaccinating children of volunteers early next week since it will be
impossible for volunteers to stand in line and work at the same time!
Details to follow in this space.

. The clinic is open to members of the public who meet the criteria
previously outlined here on ATOTW

Your reasonable participation and patience will be essential. Crowd control
measures include the following:

. Hanover Police will be on hand directing traffic

. Please enter through the side/gym doors

. There are 300 shots and 300 live mist doses. When you arrive, your
children will be evaluated by a medical professional and put in one group or
the other. You may not receive your first choice; decisions will be made on
a medically necessary basis. You do have the ability to decline a vaccine
type if it is not your first choice!

. You will be assigned a color coded card and group number that
indicates when your children will be called for their vaccine

. Members of the Student Council and National Honor Society will be
on hand to help entertain your children in the common spaces of the high
school while you wait

. Parents will need to watch for their group to be called into the
gym for the vaccine

. If your child does not receive their vaccine this weekend, there
will be LOTS more vaccine and additional clinics will be scheduled in the
future. Stay tuned to this space for further details!

As you may know, I don’t re-run previous e-mails.because I clog up people’s
in-boxes enough as it is! But, if you ever need to be reminded about the
details that appeared in a previous e-mail (in this case, vaccine
eligibility, or the date and time of this Saturday’s flu clinic, for
instance), just go to www.atotw.com , click on the archives tab, and type in
a key word in the search box in the upper right corner. A friend once
called it an electronic file cabinet for all of Hanover!
