Hanover VNA Open Meeting

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover VNA would like to invite all Hanover residents and friends to
their annual Open Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, April 13th, at 1:00
p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room.

The guest speaker will be Shirley Harrow, a retired 76 year-old nurse from
Quincy, who has been working for nine years to try to get recognition and
veteran’s status for the Cadet nurses who provided 80 percent of the nursing
care in this country both in civilian and military hospitals during World
War II. Although Shirley was too young to be a Cadet nurse herself, she
became passionately involved in their cause after interviewing a former
cadet nurse who was leading a grass roots effort to have the corps members
work recognized.

The young women who served in the Cadet Nurse Corps were actively recruited
by the U.S. Public Health Service, an agency which was militarized during
World War II. Of the about 124,000 women who graduated from the corps
between 1943 and 1948, it is estimated that only a few thousand are still
living. Ms. Harrow has talked with many of these women and will undoubtedly
share some of their stories as well as information about her fight to gain
them the recognition and benefits to which she feels they are entitled.

Refreshments will be served following the program.
