Early voting comes back to Massachusetts

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier is delighted to announce that all
registered voters will once again be able vote before Election Day in
Massachusetts this fall. Early voting will begin on October 22nd and
continue through November 2nd, 2018. Prior to the enactment of this new
law, the only way a registered voter was allowed to vote prior to Election
Day was through absentee voting. Although absentee voting will still be
available for registered voters who qualify, only those who will be absent
from Hanover on Election Day, or have a disability that prevents them from
going to the polls, or have a religious belief preventing the same, are
legally allowed to vote by absentee ballot.

Unlike absentee voting, early voting is for every registered voter.
Registered voters do not need an excuse or reason to vote early. Regardless
of whether a voter wants to take advantage of early voting, vote absentee
or vote on Election Day, the first step is making sure you are registered.
To check to see if you are registered to vote, and to find information on
how to register to vote, you may visit the Secretary of the
Commonwealth’s website: www.sec.state.ma.us/ele and go to “Am I
Registered to Vote?” If you need to register to vote, you may do so
online by visiting: www.RegisterToVoteMA.com. All you need is a license or
an ID issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles to apply online. To be
eligible to vote in the November 6th State Election, you must register to
vote or make any necessary changes to your voter registration by October
17th, 2018.

In Hanover, early voting may be accomplished in person at Hanover Town
Hall, 550 Hanover Street, during the two weeks of October 22nd – November
2nd on: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.,
Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 12
noon. For the convenience of the public, Hanover Town Clerk Catherine
Harder-Bernier has also decided to offer weekend hours on Saturday, October
27th, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Please note, however, once a voter has cast an early voting ballot, the
voter may no longer vote at the polls on Election Day.

For only the second time in Massachusetts, the first choice all voters will
make is which day to vote. Early voting will make the most fundamental
right of our citizens more convenient than ever to exercise. All Hanover
residents are encouraged to exercise that right and take advantage of the
opportunity to vote when their schedules allow.

For more information, please contact the Town Clerk’s Office at (781)
826-5000 x1079 or Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or Assistant Town Clerk Meg Pallotta
at meg.pallotta@hanover-ma.gov .

Political signs

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Town of Hanover released the following statement regarding political
signs today:

“The Town of Hanover’s Sign Bylaw states that political signs (not more
than one per candidate per lot) are permitted for a period of three weeks
before any election to three days after. This local law was enacted in
1974. This means that for the upcoming election on November 6th, political
signs should not be installed until October 16th. We believe that
education is the best form of enforcement. The Department of Community
Development and Municipal Inspections and the Town Clerk’s Office
cordially ask everyone in town to voluntarily follow these rules.”

For more information regarding the Town’s sign by-law, please review the
by-law that is found here:
https://www.hanover-ma.gov/sites/hanoverma/files/file/file/hanover-sign-bylaw-2016.pdf
or contact the Building Department at (781) 826-5000 x1078 or
building@hanover-ma.gov or the Town Clerk’s Office at x1079.

Music and Story Program at John Curtis Library

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Music and Story Program at John Curtis Library
Thursday October 18, 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

“Tuned Up” is a music-infused literary program that works singing,
playing instruments and movement into children’s books, old and new.
Instructor Eileen Wilson chooses a book and writes music inspired by the
story, characters and tone. In the program, she first introduces the book
and teaches the songs to the children, while playing guitar or ukulele.
Some require instrumental accompaniment that children play on xylophones
and percussion instruments. Others use scarves, ribbons, or other movement
manipulatives. After the group practices each song, Eileen reads the story
aloud, working each song into a different part of the story. Though geared
towards the 5 – 8-year-old age bracket, younger and older participants
would enjoy it as well.

The program is funded by the Friends of the Library.

Attendance is limited. Please register from the Calendar section of the
library’s website, www.hanovermass.com/library. For more information, call
781-826-2972, ext. 4, or email the children’s librarian at
lcampbell@ocln.org.
