Public hearing regarding zoning articles

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have gotten numerous questions both in my office and at home regarding
this upcoming public hearing, and have been asked to post this as a result.

From the official notice: “Notice is hereby given pursuant to
Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40A, Section 5 (The Zoning Act),
that the Planning Board of the Town of Hanover will hold a
Public Hearing on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the
second floor hearing room of the Town Hall, 550 Hanover Street,
Hanover.”

Up for discussion are articles regarding a proposed temporary moratorium on
the sale of marijuana, a proposal to change the zoning for the St. Mary’s
property from residential to business, and some changes to Planned
Residential Developments for Seniors and to Village Planned Unit
Development.

For more information, please go to:
http://m.hanover-ma.gov/sites/hanoverma/files/file/file/town_of_hanover_2017_annual_town_meeting_public_hearing_.pdf
, or contact the Planning Office at 781-826-5000, then press the Community
Services prompt, then 6.

Portland ship disaster

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Tuesday March 7 at 7:00 p.m., historian Art Milmore will present a talk
and slide show dealing with the tragic loss of the steamer Portland in the
Thanksgiving gale of 1898. Frequently called New England’s
“Titanic”, the Portland sank twenty miles outside of Massachusetts Bay
killing all 192 people on board. The wreck was not discovered until 1989
and was conclusively proven to be the Portland in 2002. Mr. Milmore has
written a book, “And the Sea Shall Have Them All”, which will be available
for purchase and signing.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the John Curtis Library. There
is no charge for admission. Refreshments will be served. The library is
located on Route 139 in Hanover Center. For more information, please

Real-time town election updates

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

After my e-mail last Thursday regarding the upcoming Town Election, several
of you chimed in with further questions. Keep those questions and calls
and e-mails coming. I am delighted to see the interest, and happy to
answer your questions!

For those who don’t want to wait for another ATOTW e-mail update about the
process, I want to point you toward another resource that might be helpful
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please simply go to the Hanover MA Town
Clerk Facebook page for real-time updates. There you will find up-to-the
minute news regarding who has pulled papers, who has turned them in, and
who will be on the ballot. There is also information regarding deadlines
and next steps for those who have pulled papers.

The page may be found at https://www.facebook.com/HanoverMAClerk/ . While
you are there, and if you have a Facebook account, if you “like” the page,
posts to that page will show up in your news feed going forward.

Again, thanks for getting excited about our town election this spring. At
the rate we are going, this may well prove to be the most action-packed
town election we have during my tenure as Town Clerk!

Town election update

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

As you know from a previous post, nomination papers for the local town
election are currently available. What you might not know is that due to a
resignation, there is now also going to be a one-year term on the Planning
Board on this spring’s ballot! The other (previously announced) seats on
the ballot are: two members of the Board of Selectmen for a three year term
each, two members of the School Committee for a three year term each, one
member of the Board of Assessors for a three year term, one member of the
Planning Board for a five year term, one Board of Health member for a three
year term, one member of the Board of Public Works for a three year term,
two Trustees of the Public Library – one for a three year term and one for
a one year term, and one Moderator for a one year term.

For the Selectman’s race, papers have been pulled, returned and certified
for incumbent Robert O’Rourke and Jocelyn Keegan. Papers have also been
pulled by Robert Melone and Emmanuel Dockter for Selectman. In the School
Committee race, incumbents Kimberly Mills-Booker and Ruth Lynch have both
pulled papers; Mrs. Lynch’s papers have been returned but not yet
certified. Kenneth Blanchard has pulled papers for the five year term on
the Planning Board, and his papers have been returned and certified.
Incumbent Elaine Shea has pulled papers for re-election to a three year
term as Library Trustee. Gabrielle Mahoney and Lynn White have pulled
papers for the Board of Health seat. Incumbent David Delaney has pulled
papers for the Board of Assessors, and Douglas Thomson has pulled papers
for re-election as Town Moderator. And this just in, within the past 24
hours, Kara Nyman and Gary Young, Jr. have pulled papers for the one year
Planning Board term!

To date, no one has expressed interest in the Board of Public Works term or
the one year term as a Library Trustee.

Interested residents are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk’s Office,
any of the related departments, or sitting members of the board or
committee they are interested in becoming a part of in order to gain more
information about an open position.

To run for office, candidates only need to obtain 50 signatures of
registered Hanover voters in order to be placed on the ballot. Candidates
for office have until Monday, March 20th to submit the signed nomination
papers to the Registrar’s Office for signature certification.

For more information about the election process and related deadlines,
please contact Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier or Senior Clerk
Meg Pallotta at (781) 826-5000 x1079 or by e-mail at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or meg.pallotta@hanover-ma.gov .
