Update regarding the State Representative’s race

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I thought you would appreciate an update from the closely watched State
Representative’s race. When the ballot machine results were tallied
Tuesday night, Rhonda Nyman had 3037 votes and David DeCoste had 3014 votes
in Hanover. According to on-line reports from the Hanover Mariner, when
results from Rockland and Norwell were added to this tally, DeCoste was up
by 59 votes at the end of the night across the three towns.
Hand-counted, Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA),
and Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB), and possible provisional
ballots are not included in those results. In Hanover, the 17 hand-counted
ballots yielded 11 additional votes for Nyman and 6 additional votes for
DeCoste. There are a total of 4 UOCAVA and FWAB ballots in Hanover that by
statute cannot be counted until after 5:00 p.m. on November 14th. There
are also 26 possible provisional ballots in Hanover. Rockland and Norwell
numbers are not included in this information, but both towns continued to
count ballots this past week. Updates are surely available from on-line
media reports.
Provisional ballots are issued for two possible reasons, and in Hanover,
all of provisional ballots were issued because a voter appeared at the
polls and did not appear on the voting lists. The other reason why a
provisional ballot would have been issued – an ID was required but the
voter did not have one – did not occur on Tuesday in Hanover.
The Registrars of Voters, the Assistant Town Clerk and I continue to
research the statewide voter registration history of all 26 of the possible
provisional voters. It is quite an exhaustive process. These
determinations must be completed by November 16th, and reported to the
state by November 19th. We plan to make a final determination regarding
whether some or perhaps even all of the 26 ballots in Hanover can be
counted on Thursday, November 13th.
Finally, a representative from the Nyman campaign inquired about recount
petitions on Friday, November 7th in my office. While we had petition
forms for a town-wide or individual precinct recounts, the campaign was
interested in receiving district-wide petition forms, which are available
from the Secretary of State’s Elections Division. It is not known
whether or not those forms were requested or received yesterday.
As this process continues to unfold, don’t hesitate to direct questions
to me at (781) 826-5000, x1079 or catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov .

Unofficial Hanover election results

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Attached please find the unofficial election results from the Town of
Hanover’s State Election yesterday. Overseas and hand-counted ballots are
still being tallied, so these results will change slightly.
Over 6,200 Hanover residents came to the polls yesterday – a great showing
for a mid-term election. Congrats to all!

Infamous murder cases in Massachusetts

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Mass Murder!

On November 4 at 7:00 p.m., the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library
will sponsor a fully illustrated lecture by historian Chris Daley
concerning some of Massachusetts’ most infamous murder cases. If you
like mystery, suspense and a little blood and gore, you will love this
program! Included in the cases examined is the “boy fiend”, the
youngest person in the Commonwealth to be convicted of murder and also the
longest “lifer” in the state’s history; Jane Toppan, a nurse on the
Cape who poisoned her patients; the Weymouth “merry widow” whose body
was dismembered and dumped into Boston Harbor; and the Boston Strangler and
Lizzie Borden. There is no admission charge for this program. The Library
is located on Route 139 in Hanover Center.
For more information, please contact Lorraine Welsh at lwelsh@ocln.org .

Another great fall trail walk

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Friday, November 28th at 10:00 a.m. join the Open Space Committee for
their annual “Day After Thanksgiving” walk. This year, they will walk
the 1.3 mile Chapman’s Landing/Iron Mine Brook loop trail. They will
meet at the Hanover Canoe Launch at the end of Indian Head Drive (off Elm
Street). Plenty of parking is available. The trail features views of the
Indian Head River and the North River, as well as the new Eagle Scout-built
footbridges along Iron Mine Brook. This is a lovely often overlooked part
of Hanover. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

For more information, please contact Mary Dunn: meugdunn@gmail.com, or Hal

Election Day is Tuesday! Are you ready?

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It would be hard to miss the fact that Election Day is this coming Tuesday,
November 4th. Between the commercials, debates, newspaper headlines and
phone calls, the candidates and ballot question activists have been very
busy trying to influence our votes.

Here in Hanover, I as your Town Clerk stand ready to help you exercise the
greatest gift of democracy – the right to vote. The polls are open from
7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. All four precincts vote at Hanover
High School, which is located at 287 Cedar Street. If you would like to
double check that you are registered to vote before you go, just go to:
http://www.sec.state.ma.us/VoterRegistrationSearch/MyVoterRegStatus.aspx .

The ballot is long and there are five (count ‘em!) questions, not to
mention the candidates running in a total of 14 different contests. You
are encouraged to read the ballot and prepare how you wish to vote prior to
arriving at the polls. Also, a large turnout is expected and lines could
be long, so please allow extra time. Help us to help you to vote with
ease! Interested to hear there are 5 (and not just 4) questions on the
ballot? Want to review the entire ballot before you get to the polls?
Need to double check which precinct you are in? Just go to:
http://www.wheredoivotema.com/bal/myelectioninfo.aspx .

We look forward to seeing you at the polls on Tuesday. If you have any
questions about the election, don’t hesitate to call me, Town Clerk Cathy
Harder-Bernier, or Assistant Town Clerk JoAnne O’Connor at (781) 826-5000
x1079, or e-mail us at catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or
joanne.oconnor@hanover-ma.gov. See you Tuesday!

Hanover Public Schools Textile Recycling Contest

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Public Schools have partnered with Bay State Textiles in an
ongoing GREEN fundraiser. The focus of the program is to spread awareness
to the problem of textile waste, educate on acceptable items for textile
recycling, while generating revenue for the Hanover Public Schools.
Donation boxes are located outside of each school generating revenue for
that school based on the weight of the donations.

Bay State Textiles has added an incentive with a “Fall Closet Clean Out
Contest,” offering an additional financial benefit on top of the $100 per
ton generated by the Schools. The Hanover Public Schools combined have to
collect 14,000 pounds to receive an additional $450.00. The contest runs
September 1, 2014 through January 15, 2015.

Invite your friends, family and neighbors to participate and support the
Hanover Public Schools.

Acceptable Items: Clothing, Shoes, Pocketbooks, Household Linens,
Accessories and Stuffed Animals in any condition as long as they are not
wet or contaminated with hazardous material.

For additional information contact:
Kathryn Larsen
Recycling Development Coordinator
Bay State Textiles
Klarsen@baystatetextiles.com
617-877-2432

This is an ongoing, year round program, allowing 24/7 access for textile
