Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

“Let’s Go Fly a Kite!” The Hanover Cultural Council is excited to
announce Kite Day for Hanover’s children. On Saturday, May 10, Dr. Wallace
Kemp will again open his field at 688 Main Street from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30
p.m. to anyone interested in flying a kite (pending good weather). This
field is situated on a hill which affords wonderful kite-flying on a
moderately windy day. The field is part of a larger conservation area of
the Wildlands Trust of Southeastern Massachusetts, so there is plenty of
space for all. Don McCasland, the Program Director of the Blue Hill
Observatory and an avid kite-lover, will also be at the field to provide
great tips on kite-flying technique. Parking is on Main Street or the side
streets, Buena Vista or Buttercup.

In conjunction with this event, the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library
will host a kite-making program on Saturday, May 10 from 10:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. downstairs at the John Curtis Free Library. Don McCasland will
provide kite kits and show you how to construct your kite. This event is
recommended for children ages 4 – 8 with a parent and for 8 years and over
without a parent (the parent must otherwise remain in the library). The
program lasts for about an hour.

These activities are free (funded by the Hanover Cultural Council and the
Friends of the John Curtis Free Library) and open to the public, but you
must register your child to make a kite at the children’s circulation desk
at the library. There are 40 spaces reserved from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.,
another 40 spaces from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

For more information about the program, contact lcampbell@ocln.org , and
for more information about the Friends of the John Curtis Library, contact
tjmarchetti@verizon.net .

Potential privatization of the transfer station

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Board of Selectmen will host a public forum to provide
information on current discussions and plans for the potential
privatization of the town’s transfer station. The forum will be held on
Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Town Hall.

An article on the May Special Town Meeting Warrant seeks community feedback
on the proposal, which is in the early stages of development. The
Selectmen have scheduled the forum to provide an opportunity to ask
questions and provide feedback.

For more information, please contact Town Manager Troy Clarkson at

Drug Take-Back Day

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Do you have unwanted medication(s) you need to dispose of?

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) is coordinating, with the Hanover
Board of Health and the Hanover Police Department, a nationwide one-day
event to take back unwanted medications on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the
Hanover Senior Center, 665 Center Street, Hanover, between the hours of 10
a.m. and 2 p.m.

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to
surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law
enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused or unwanted
substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for the increasing
abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and an unacceptable risk
to public health and safety.

For more information, please call the Board of Health Office at
781-826-4611 or e-mail health@hanover-ma.gov .

Avoid the dog license late fee today!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Cathy Harder-Bernier reminded residents today that the
last day to register their dogs this year is Wednesday, April 30.
Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 140, Section 137 dictates that “The
owner or keeper of a dog over the age of 6 months shall obtain a license
for the dog,” which is why dog licenses are required in every town in the
Commonwealth. In order to obtain a license, residents need to show proof
of current rabies vaccination.

The cost of a dog license in Hanover is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog,
or $15 for a non-spayed or non-neutered dog. If a dog is not licensed by
April 30th, a $35 late fee will be applied beginning May 1st. Unlicensed
dogs may be subjected to fines ranging from $25 – $100 per day depending on
the infraction. Dog licenses are available during normal business hours in
the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall.

For more information about dog licensing, please go to the Town Clerk’s
page of the Town’s website at
http://www.hanover-ma.gov/town-clerk/pages/dog-licenses , or contact Cathy
at catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or JoAnne at
joanne.oconnor@hanover-ma.gov or by calling (781) 826-5000, 1079.
