Dear fellow Hanoverians:
An icon in town is retiring.
Please join me in wishing Department of Public Works employee Steve
Herrmann well as he retires after 40 years of service to the Town of
Hanover. Steve served for 15 years in the highway department, 12 years
in the cemetery department, and the past 13 years at the transfer
station.
I had the chance to get to know Steve easily 10 years ago when he was
identified to me as the contact person at the transfer station for Cub
Scout field trips. A den leader at the time, I reached out to Steve
because I had heard the transfer station field trip reputation was
solid. He did not disappoint. He was patient with the boys,
understanding, and very knowledgeable about the business of recycling
and disposal of our town’s trash. After that meeting and field trip,
it seemed like Steve was always there when I went to the “dump”,
greeting me with a wave and some genuinely friendly conversation. A
hard worker, he was always behind the wheel of the backhoe or helping
a fellow resident. He was the point person when I did bottle bin duty,
and was always supportive of the Scouts in town. He represented his
department with pride and honor.
A few weeks ago, I came across Steve’s name on a sign on a bulletin
board in Town Hall. One conversation led to another when I was at the
dump last week and I soon learned that he was a leader in the union,
also. Now that I think about it, I remember seeing him at a benefits
meeting in Town Hall a few years back. Not only did he work hard for
Hanover residents, he worked hard and supported his fellow employees,
also. Last week, Steve let it slip that he was retiring on July 27,
2013; bittersweet news, for sure. This weekend, his fellow DPW staff
told me that he did not want any recognition for his retirement.
I could not let it go. I had the vehicle in “Around Town on the
Web”, and I know there will be legions of residents who will know
Steve and want to thank him for his service to our town. Please join
me in thanking 40 year Town employee Steve Herrmann for his
considerable and outstanding service to our town over the next couple
of weeks. He has 14 more work days left as I write this, so don’t
miss the chance to say thank you to Steve next time you make a
transfer station run.
All best, Steve. Enjoy this next chapter of your life. Keep us posted
after you head west to see your grandchildren. I and the entire Town
of Hanover are grateful for your service.

Cathy Harder-Bernier, Hanover’s Town Clerk, recently recommended to
the Board of Selectmen a Saturday, September 28th, 2013 Special Town
Election to fill the vacancy on the Board of Selectmen. The Board of
Selectmen has set the date of the Special Town Election for that day.
At an upcoming Board of Selectman’s meeting, Harder-Bernier will
recommend an Election Calendar, which establishes dates such as the
last day to submit nomination papers to the Registrar’s for
certification, and the last day to object or withdraw from candidacy,
along with the last day to register to vote.
Please be advised that all interested candidates for the vacancy on
the Board of Selectmen should obtain nomination papers from the
Clerk’s Office after the Selectmen set the Election Calendar.
Nomination papers need to be signed by 50 or more registered voters.
Interested candidates for the vacancy on the Board of Selectmen are
encouraged to ask questions of the Clerk’s Office during normal Town

American Originals: Hanover Historical Society’s Center for
Traditional Arts and Crafts

Beginning Papermaking

July 20th and July 21st, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Make your own paper! Learn where and how paper was first made and how
it has changed the history of the world. Discover your inner
creativity and come away with skills you can use for a lifetime.

Students will be able to: describe the history of paper from its
origins in Asia to its uses today, bring samples for examination and
discussion, talk about different types and uses of paper, and
demonstrate basic techniques. The final product will be a bound
sampler of handmade papers. Students will learn what goes into making
a sheet of paper as well as vocabulary and household items necessary
to make paper. They will take a walk and find plants or other items to
include in their paper. The second session will include making a mold
and deckle and paper casting. Students will even learn about a scandal
that involved historic Asian papers that happened right here in
Hanover!

Instructor: Janet Meade of Hanover is an accomplished artist. She has
a Bachelor’s degree from MASS Art and a Masters in Education
Leadership from Bridgewater State. She is currently a High School art
teacher in East Bridgewater. She lives on her farm on Center Street
which has goats, chickens, and her two dogs.

This program is appropriate for any age from 8+ years. Cost is $200
and includes cost of supplies and two four hour classes. Call (781)

This summer’s bandstand concert series begins on Sunday, July 7 at
the Hanover Senior Center at 665 Center Street in Hanover. Doors open
at 5:00 p.m. for the Art Exhibit. The concerts run from 6:00 p.m. –
8:00 p.m. The Dixie Diehards are performing on July 7.

This year, Hanover Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Hanover
Council on Aging to offer an exciting series titled “Art for All
Ages.” Along with lively music, there will be a juried art show, art
exhibits by children and seniors, 60 second skits, face painting and
chalk art for kids. Raffles, prizes, hot dogs, cold drinks and snacks
will be available.

Weather permitting the concerts will be held outside on the lovely
grounds of the Senior Center. Bring your chairs and blankets. If the
weather does not cooperate, the show will go on inside the Senior
Center.

Additional concerts will be held on Sunday, July 21 – Rusty Skipper;
Sunday, August 4 – Desperate Measures; and Sunday, August 18 – Grupo
Fantasia.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The John Curtis Library will officially begin its children’s summer
reading program on Thursday, July 11 at 11:00 a.m. Davis Bates and
Roger Tincknell will present “Earth Rhythms: Stories and Songs for
the Whole Earth.” The concert celebrates reading while exploring the
diversity and wonder of the natural world. Davis tells entertaining
stories from around the world while Roger plays a wide variety of
musical instruments. Bates and Tincknell have performed at the library
several times in recent years to very enthusiastic audiences.

Registration for the library’s summer reading program will begin
immediately after the concert. The program is appropriate for all
ages. Free tickets are available at the children’s room desk. For

This program is funded by a grant from the Hanover Cultural Council, a

The Town of Hanover Parks and Recreation day program starts July 1st!

Drop off starts at 8:30 a.m. and pick-up is at 2:30 p.m. at B. Everett
Hall Playground Complex in the center of town near Sylvester School.
Traffic is always tied up the first couple of days, but it does smooth
out as the summer goes along. If you are able to take an alternate
route during those times, however, it might be to your advantage!

More important, however, is the fact that the B. Everett Hall
Playground Complex is a “CLOSED CAMPUS” during camp hours (Monday
– Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.). The playground (including the tot
lot), tennis court, basketball courts, street hockey rink, volleyball
area, bandstand, fields, etc. are all not available for use by the
general public during those times. The Parks and Recreation Department
has been charged with the safety of literally hundreds of Hanover’s
children enrolled in the Park and Rec program, and nothing is more
important!

The Parks and Recreation Committee recognizes that this will result in
some schedule juggling for townspeople for the 7 weeks (July 1st –
August 16th) that camp runs, and appreciates the understanding of
everyone involved. For more information or in case you have further

Colonial Kids Day

With the Hanover Historical Society

Join the Hanover Historical Society every Wednesday in July from 2:00
– 4:00 p.m. for Colonial Kids, an education program for all ages.
This program focuses on a different theme of colonial life from food
to occupations. Come dress up, play games, and learn about what life
was like for our Colonial ancestors!

July 3- Colonial Food- taste colonial food and learn about traditional
cooking!

July 10- Revolution- see real life objects used in the American
Revolution!

July 17- Jobs and Training

July 24- The Education of Manners

July 31- Hanover Church and Government

Program is held at Hanover Historical Society Headquarters (Stetson

donation of $10 per family, no reservations required. Program is

/What is the Summer Reading Program?/

Teens in grades 7-12 can earn prizes for reading over the summer! Stop
by the Reference Desk on the second floor of the library to pick up
your summer reading packet.

/How does it work?/

On the log, write down the date for every day that you read. Then,
after 7 days of reading, bring your log into the library to receive a
prize. Prizes include: wallet, lanyard, water bottle, reading light,

KEEP YOUR LOG! You will hand it in at the end of the summer to Abby,
the YA librarian. The last day to hand in the log is Wednesday August

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Historic St. Andrew’s Church located in the Four Corners area of
Hanover needs to restore its steeple. The original church built in
1811 was destroyed in a fire on Christmas night 1985. The rebuild
included the entire sanctuary as well as a new steeple. While the dome
is intact, the wooden structure is in need of repair. St. Andrew’s
has therefore launched the “Coins for Quoins” project. A quoin is
an architectural part of the corners. Typically made of masonry in
stone structures, the quoins on the St. Andrew’s steeple are made of
wood and there are 96 of them. To help raise funds for the repair, St.
Andrew’s is selling memorial quoins. Quoins in “Thanksgiving of”
or in “Memory of” maybe purchased for $50.00 each. A plaque listing
the honorees will be placed in the entrance of the church. Any gift is
welcome towards this project. Work is expected to begin at the end of
summer. At completion, there will be a blessing of the steeple to
