Rotary Club donations

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The good news just keeps on coming! Between the Cardinal Cushing
Christmas party and the well-met demand for services at the Hanover
Food Pantry, Hanover residents continue to simply take care of each
other.

I was therefore delighted, (but not totally surprised given the
messenger), to hear more good news from this year’s Spirit of
Hanover Award winner, Mr. Roger A. Leslie, Sr. Roger continues to
inspire all of us to a higher level of service, thereby continuing to
be a living embodiment of the spirit in which the award is given.
Roger kindly informed me this week that the fundraising efforts of the
Tri-Town Rotary Club have resulted in some outstanding contributions
to Hanover organizations, as follows:

$3,000 to the Hanover Food Pantry
$2,000 to the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association, and
$500 to the Newtown, CT Rotary Club for assistance to the families in
need after the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Congratulations to the members of the Rotary Club for these
outstanding contributions and special thanks to Roger for helping me
to continue to shout good news from the rooftops of Hanover.

Update from the Hanover Food Pantry

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The following e-mail update comes directly from the good folks at the
Hanover Food Pantry. Please especially note the temporary change in
the hours due to the holidays.
“What a busy season we are having at the pantry! It is marvelous
that we are able to keep up with food demands since our town has such
amazing citizens who are willing to share and take care of our needs.
Ever since the Around-the-Town e-mail call went out in September
stating that the shelves were emptying out as fast as they were
stocked, we have been very busy taking in all kind of contributions.
Groups, schools, scouts, sports teams, civic organizations, churches,
clubs, private citizens and more have all come forward to donate
either money, collected food, gift cards or their time to help the
pantry. Shaw’s has had a special collection throughout the fall, and
Stop and Shop has been working with us by donating surplus goods.
Panera day-old breads are donated weekly as are baked goods from
Lillian M’s. Our clients love these treats and look forward to the
tableful of breads, muffins, bagels, cakes and cookies.
The need for services at the pantry has increased greatly over the
past two months. Last week we helped feed 21 families and this
Wednesday we had 32. Luckily, we were able to fill everyone’s
requests and send them home with bags of groceries. We are grateful,
and thank everyone in town for answering our need. It gives all of the
volunteers at the pantry great pleasure to fill the need.
We are changing our hours for the next two weeks as the holidays fall
on Tuesdays. Below are the changes and we will return to our normal
schedule afterwards.
The pantry will be closed for ingathering on Monday, December 24, and
closed for distribution, Wednesday, December 26.
We will open on Friday, December 28th, for ingathering from 9:30 –
11:30 a.m., and distribution from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but as we are
staffed entirely by volunteers, we felt it best to give our staff a
much needed holiday break.
We will have the same schedule for the New Year’s holiday as well.
The pantry will be closed for ingathering on Monday, December 31, and
closed for distribution, Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
We will open on Friday, January 4, for ingathering from 9:30 – 11:30
a.m., and distribution from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
If anyone wanted to drop off a contribution next Monday, please wait
until Friday, December 28, or mail contributions to:
Hanover Emergency Food Pantry
c/o The First Baptist Church
58 Webster Street
Hanover, MA 02339

If you have further questions about the food pantry or this change in
hours, please e-mail Sally at kidsense@comcast.net

. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and thank you to
everyone.
Sincerely,
Barbara Itz and Sally Lovett Boutin, Pantry Co-Chairs”

Holiday shopping reminders

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
This is just a friendly reminder from the good folks of the Hanover
Police Department. Please remember to lock your car doors at all
times, and to park in an area that is well-lit. If you are doing some
last-minute holiday shopping, make sure packages or other valuables in
your car are out of sight. Place them in your trunk or under a seat so
that they are not a temptation for passersby.
The HPD is aware of at least a couple of isolated break-ins this
month, and it is always a good idea to heed their advice and take an
extra moment to prevent a car break from happening to you.
Please also consider this e-mail a sincere shout out of thanks to my
good friend Beth who was one of the unlucky ones, but whose kind
e-mail of concern helped prompt this reminder to all of us. Further
thanks to HPD Det. Jon Abban who responds to my e-mails day or night,
working or off the clock. Together we make this town great!

“Christmas must go on!”

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Regular readers who somehow found time to peruse “Around Town on the
Web” (ATOTW) this past week may have noticed or even bid on the
Celtics tickets that were offered during the most recent ATOTW on-line
charity auction. The auction was held to help raise money for an
exceptional Christmas party that has been held here in Hanover for the
past nine years. Ten years ago, a few Hanover residents learned that
some of our student neighbors at Cardinal Cushing Centers are unable
(for a variety of reasons) to go home for Christmas. As one of the
bidders said to me in an e-mail, “Christmas must go on!” That
sentiment gave origin to the Christmas party 10 years ago and the
ATOTW auction this year. There were an unprecedented number of bidders
in the auction and the monetary response was nothing short of
heart-warming.
I am delighted to report that the two Celtics tickets, with a total
face value of $160, raised a whopping $550 during the ATOTW on-line
auction! The high bidder, upon hearing more about the $4,000 budget
for the party and the 40 or so students who would get to celebrate
Christmas as a result, singlehandedly took it upon herself to increase
her donation to $1,000 so that the party would have some “seed
money” for next year, too. The organizers and I were floored.
The Christmas party was held this evening and the sheer joy on the
faces of the students at Cardinal Cushing was an extra special treat
for all in attendance. There was music, Christmas carol singing, pizza
and ice cream sundaes. A game of limbo even broke out. But nothing
topped a visit from Santa in the eyes of the students. They chanted
his name, ran to hug him, sat on his lap, and posed excitedly for
pictures. Santa brought huge gift bags for the students that were
purchased with donations, including the magnanimous donation from the
Celtics tickets winner.
The small town of Hanover is a yet smaller place because of the
connections made right here through “Around Town on the Web”. Our
neighbors at Cardinal Cushing, who will be calling Cardinal Cushing
their home for Christmas this year, got to share an exceptional
evening because of some very special Hanover residents who continue to
vow that Christmas must go on. Thank you to all who bid in the on-line
auction. Your generosity and thoughtfulness is amazing, and I am
already looking forward to next year.

Celtics tickets auctioned right here on ATOTW

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It has been a little while since I have run a charity auction right
here “Around Town on the Web,” so there is probably no better time
to jump back in the mix…just in time for the holidays!

This is a time of year that so many of us look forward to spending
with family and friends. For one reason or another however, 40
students at the Cardinal Cushing Centers here in Hanover will not be
able to go home. So, fundraising is in full swing to throw them a
Christmas party with pizza, ice cream, music, Santa, and a big bag of
presents for each student. Thanks to private donations, this party has
happened for the last nine years and will happen again this Friday,
December 21st!

This year, there are a couple of Celtics tickets up for auction right
here on “Around Town on the Web” – with the proceeds all going
toward the Cardinal Cushing Centers party.

Two tickets are available for the following game and seats:

Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls (Deng, Boozer and Noah come to town…maybe
D Rose will be back!)
February 13, 2013
Section 8/Row 14
Seats 14 and 15

The 2 seats have total face value of $160. For those who are
relatively new to “Around Town on the Web”, here’s how it works.
Bidding will begin at $100 at 11:00 a.m. on *Tuesday, December 18th
*and will be accomplished simply by sending an e-mail to
cathyhb@atotw.com
. Once you enter a bid, you will be added to the distribution list
that will keep you updated on the latest bid (as best as humanly
possible!). Bids will be accepted until exactly 11:00 a.m. on
*Wednesday, December 19th.* If two bids for the same amount are
received, the earlier bid will take precedence. So, it is to your
advantage to bid your best price early. Bids /received/ by me after
11:00 a.m. (computer clock time) on *Wednesday* will not be
considered. So don’t wait until it is too late!

Gift someone special with some Celtics tickets and gift the students
at the Cardinal Cushing Centers at the same time. If you are the
winning bidder, your tickets will be delivered to you before
Christmas. Mark your calendar and send your bids to me at
cathyhb@atotw.com
beginning *Tuesday *(tomorrow as I write this) at 11:00 a.m. Bid
early, bid often!

If this opportunity touches your heart but you are not a Celtics fan,
you are also invited to send a donation made payable to the Cardinal
Cushing Centers (c/o Luke Dillon, 40 Maplewood Drive, Hanover). Please
also contact Luke with any fundraiser questions, 617-699-2244 (cell)
or ldillon@liam.org

Elementary schools fundraiser

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

There is a new group in town called “Friends of Hanover
Elementaries”, and they are planning an Adult-Night-Out fundraiser.

As parents of Hanover elementary students, they are trying to raise
money to purchase items for the classrooms of both elementary schools
in Hanover. They work independently of the school department as well
as of the HPTA and HFEE, and as such, they have a separate tax id
number, but are not (yet) a 501(c)3.

Their goal is to enjoy a night out with friends, make new friends as
well as make money for Cedar and Center-Sylvester Elementary schools.

The event will be at the Pembroke Country Club, 94 W. Elm Street, on
Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. – midnight. They will
feature Danny Gill and the Old Brigade, a DJ, Tim Wakefield (who will
be there from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.), raffles, silent auction,
appetizers and much more.

Tickets are now on sale for $25.00 per person. Please contact Deb
Moody at debramoody@verizon.net
or Molly Sacco at msacco33@hotmail.com
to purchase tickets. In case you have further questions, please
contact Michelle Pevarnek at mpev311@aol.com
