Damage from Sandy? Contact HEMA

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The following is a message from the Hanover Emergency Management
Agency:
If your home or business received damage from Hurricane Sandy, please
help the Town of Hanover complete the Initial Damage Assessment (IDA)
report. The IDA is the first step to determine if the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts and any of its counties may be eligible to receive
federal disaster assistance under a Presidential declaration.
To make sure we include your damage in our report, contact the Hanover
Emergency Management Agency during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m.) by calling 781-826-3151, or anytime by e-mail at
hema@hanoverfiredept.com
. Be prepared to provide your name (or the name of your business), a
brief description of the type of damage, the estimated cost to repair
damage or replace damaged items, and insurance information if known.
Hanover must submit the IDA Report to the Massachusetts Emergency
Management Agency by 12 noon on Thursday, November 8th, 2012. Please
contact the HEMA as soon as possible before then.

Race to Nowhere to be shown in Hanover

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Institute for Spiritual Life and Psychotherapy and Pastoral
Counseling Services of the Shore Shore are hosting a viewing of the
documentary “Race to Nowhere”. According to the website, “Race to
Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has
become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness
and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college
and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.” The event will be held
on Wednesday November 7th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Parish Hall, 17
Church Street. Register at http://rtnislstandrews.eventbrite.com/
for a discount on the ticket price. The ticket price at the door is
$15.00. A discussion will follow.

(Editor’s Note: If you have not already seen this documentary, I
recommend it!) For more information, please contact Elizabeth Wheatley
Dyson at beth@standrewshanover.org

High School soccer and cheerleading updates

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The end-of-the-season reports are coming in fast! Thanks to Geoff
Hoffman for the following information:
“After enjoying a bye, the Hanover boys soccer team will face
Dover-Sherborn on Sunday at Hanover HS at 5:00 p.m. Dover-Sherborn
beat Sturgis today 4-0.
Hanover girls soccer defeated Case HS today by a score of 3-0, and
will play Sunday at Norwell HS at 12 noon (previously scheduled for
1:00 p.m. on Sunday, so please note the time change to noon on
Sunday). During the game vs. Case today, there was a pretty
significant head to head injury incident in the 2nd half to players on
each team. Here’s hoping for speedy healing and recovery for both
players!
Please come out and support each team if you can. Norwell HS might as
well be a home field. No Patriots football this weekend so why not
Hanover soccer.”
And thanks to Joanne Collins for this information:
“On Saturday, October 27, 2012 the Hanover High School Cheerleaders
participated in the Invitational and Patriot League Championship
cheerleading competition at Whitman Hanson High School. The Hanover
athletes qualified to move on to the MSSAA South Regional Cheer
Tournament which is scheduled for Sunday, November 11, 2012 at S.
Dartmouth High School.”

Town capitalizes on the use of social media

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
During the recent storm, the Town of Hanover found significant value
in the use of social media. As “Around Town on the Web” (ATOTW)
readers know, the Hanover Emergency Management Agency kept the public
informed through the use of Twitter, and was able to successfully keep
us all updated via our smartphones, even if we were without power.
The Town also started a Facebook page prior to the storm but that has
not yet been mentioned here on ATOTW. Please consider “friending”
the town on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/HanoverMA
. In addition to the previously mentioned Hanover Emergency
Management (@HanoverEMA) Twitter feed found at www.twitter.com

, the town now also has a general info Twitter feed @HanoverMA .
Congratulations to Town Manager Troy Clarkson for making good use of
technology to keep us all connected (it’s like music to this ATOTW
writer’s ears!). A REALLY big shout out also goes to Hanover
Emergency Management Agency Director and Fire Chief Jeff Blanchard for
taking the time to pull together simply outstanding pre-storm
preparation information…and helping me to help all of you! Have I
mentioned lately that together we make this town great?!

Veterans’ Reflections

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
This Saturday, November 3rd from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., (please note
revised time) veterans from World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam,
Iraq, Afghanistan and any of the conflicts are invited to attend an
afternoon of reflection at the John Curtis Library. There will also be
an art exhibit featuring scenes from World War I, World War II and
railroading.
As organizer David Setterland says, “The artwork is worth the visit,
but hearing the veterans talk back and forth will be priceless”. For
more information, please refer to the “Around Town on the Web”
archives or contact David at davidsetterland@gmail.com
