Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Both the Hanover High School Boys and Girls Soccer Teams have
qualified for the MIAA Soccer Tournament and both will have opening
round home games at Hanover High School.
The girls, who compiled a respectable record of 8-6-4 in the Patriot
League (along with a tough non-league schedule), play a preliminary
round game vs. Case High School on Friday, 11/2 at 2:00 p.m. at
Hanover High School.
The boys, whose regular season record was an impressive 11-3-2, earned
a bye and play a 1st round game vs. the winner of
Dover-Sherborn/Sturgis on Sunday 11/4 at 5:00 p.m. at Hanover High
School. ATOTW ace reporter Geoff Hoffman anticipates Dover-Sherborn as
the opponent, and if so this would be a rematch of last year’s
quarter final tournament game.
Both teams would love to see big home crowds at their games. Hanover
High School Soccer, for both girls and boys, continue their impressive
consecutive tournament appearance streaks. Come cheer on the Hanover
girls on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and the Hanover boys on Sunday at 5:00
p.m. as they embark on their tournament run.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
As you surely know by now, Election Day is this Tuesday, November 6th.
Polls in Hanover are open from 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Hanover High
School, 287 Cedar Street. It is one of our most important civic duties
to vote – see you there!
A sample state ballot may be found here:

. This is not an official valid ballot, but will give you a good idea
of what to expect when you arrive at the polls. You are encouraged to
become familiar with the three ballot questions before Election Day as
they are rather lengthy and could cause lines at the polls.
Massachusetts allows voters to vote by absentee ballot if they:
· will be absent from town on election day, and/or
· have a physical disability that prevents your voting at the polling

place, and/or
· cannot vote at the polls due to religious beliefs.
Although the deadline to apply for absentee ballots is *noon the day
before the election,* the Secretary of the Commonwealth highly
recommends submitting the application as soon as practicable. The
completed ballot must be received by the local election officials
before the end of polling on Election Day. Go to

The Hanover Cultural Council will be fundraising for the 2013 Hanover
Day celebration fireworks and expanded music offerings when you arrive
at the high school on Election Day. Please give them your support.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
On Saturday, November 3rd, Hanover Youth Hockey will be hosting their
3rd Annual Try Hockey for Free Event!

All boys and girls are welcomed to attend this event that emphasizes
fun and will help children get a feel for skating and the game of
hockey.

In addition to a limited supply of free USA Hockey gift bags, there
will be some “special” guests attending.

Fun and free, this event will begin at 3:10 p.m. at the Hobomock Rink
in Pembroke (132 Hobomock Street). Please bring your own equipment as
skates and helmets are required. If you do not have equipment, they
will have a very limited supply of equipment to borrow for the hour.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Hanover Woman’s Club, Juniors will be holding a bake sale on Election
Day, 11/6, at the Hanover High School. Stop by their table and
purchase a cup of coffee and a muffin or take home one of the home
baked goodies ranging from breads to brownies to cookies and other
surprises. All proceeds from the sale will benefit The Fisher House in
West Roxbury.
The Fisher House provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and
military families receiving treatment at a military medical center. It
is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s
military in their time of need. The facility in West Roxbury is an
affiliate of the V.A. Boston Healthcare system. All lodging fees for
guest families at this house are paid through a grant from The Fisher
House Foundation.
Stop by, enjoy the goodies and support a worthwhile cause at the same

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

After only about 12 hours of no internet, phone or cable, “Around Town
on the Web” is back after a windy and rainy Hurricane Sandy couple of
days. Hope all is well with you and yours. As of 9:30 this morning,
891 Hanover households were without power. Please reach out to your
friends across town and offer them a place to shower, a warm meal, or
a cell phone recharging station.

As anyone with schoolchildren surely knows by now, Hanover Schools are
closed again today. Town Hall is open, however. Real estate taxes are
due on Thursday and the Registrar’s Office is preparing for election
day a week from today. A busy week, for sure!

One of my favorite new web pages to visit over the past couple of days
was the National Grid power outage map found here:

. Another good source of storm information was the Hanover Emergency
Managment Twitter feed found at Hanover EMA on http://www.twitter.com
. Check it out if you have not already!

In the meantime, stay safe, and please connect with your neighbors.

The following is a message from the Hanover Emergency Management
Agency.

Emergency Management has been in constant contact with Town Manager,
Troy Clarkson, Department Heads and other Town Officials. We continue
to monitor the storm together and have been busy making preparations
for a significant impact to our community.

Based upon current information on Hurricane Sandy, we urge residents
to prepare for a high wind event. Sustained winds in excess of 40 mph
are likely with higher gusts. We are expecting to see widespread power
outages in our area.

National Grid has worked together with Fire Chiefs and Emergency
Management Directors to implement a response plan for downed power
lines. They have requested crews from California, Washington State and
Canada to move into our area and assist them.

During the storm National Grid’s emphasis will be to keep roadways
open and clear of downed power lines for public safety responders.
Restoration of power may not begin for 72 hours and may take days to
complete. If you lose your power you should be prepared to be without
it for five or more days. Hopefully power can be restored sooner.

*Official Information:*
The Town of Hanover will utilize the following means to keep residents
informed:

· The web, Hanover’s web address is www.hanover-ma.gov
· Facebook, Hanover’s facebook account is @HanoverMA
· Twitter, Hanover’s twitter account is HanoverEMA
· Local Access Cable. Take the time now to find the Hanover Channels
on your cable tv.
· Reverse 911. We will utilize the Plymouth County Sheriff’s
Department Code Red alert system to send phone messages. You sign your
cell phone up for these messages also by visiting
http://www.pcsdma.org

· FM Radio, WATD 95.9FM

Shelter In Place during the storm
Residents are advised to shelter in place. At this time there are no
plans to open an emergency shelter.
· Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for hurricane
progress reports.
· Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
· Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.
· We will closely monitor the situation and open a shelter should it
be required

Downed Power Lines:
Residents are advised to use extreme care around downed utility
wires.
· *Report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1.*
· All downed wires should be considered live. This includes electric,
telephone and cable wires.
· Emergency responders will be marking downed wires with YELLOW
caution tape. Remind children to stay away from all downed wires.
· Again, all downed wires should be considered live and avoided.

*Power Outages:*
· *Phone power outages to National Grid directly at 1-800-322-3223.*
This is the best way to make sure that they know you are without
power.
· /Do not call 9-1-1 to report a power outage./

Generators:
· Use Caution when operating generators.
· Follow manufacturers instructions
· Do not run generators near structures or in enclosed areas due to
the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning

Lighting:
Battery powered lanterns and flashlights are the safest emergency
lighting source.
· Use extreme caution when using candles.

Chain Saws
· Residents who own chainsaws should follow manufacturers recommended
operating guidelines.
· Do not attempt to cut down trees that are “hung up” on houses or on
other trees. How they fall is very unpredictable and may result in
death, injury or further damage.
· Leave difficult chainsaw work to properly trained tree removal
professionals

Make sure your cell phone is charged before the storm and consider
buying a charger you can plug into your car so you are able to
re-charge it. Make sure your car’s fuel tank is topped off.

recent e-mail newsletter from the state-wide Community Preservation
