Activities are looming at the American Legion and open to all ATOTW
subscribers:

Cribbage players are welcome every Tuesday Night from 7:00 p.m. –
9:00 p.m. (open to everyone)

Free billiard night every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Meat Raffles every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. sharp until 4:00 p.m.: Monthly
prizes to be raffled including Smoker/grill, 42 inch TV, and gift
cards.

The Legion now has the “REDZONE” for those football fans during the
meat raffles on all of our big screens.

Coming soon in November: 4 day Veterans Appreciation Weekend!

Holidays are coming soon, so book the hall now! If you would like to
become a member for your continued enjoyment, please inquire with one

Last year the Legion gave $12,000 in scholarships to Hanover veteran
dependents. They also donated items in need to American heroes in
Afghanistan and donated Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to needy

*What: Gardening for the 21st Century/ – A lecture and slide show by
Marie Stella, Landscape Historian and Landscape Designer/*

*Where: Phoenix Lodge, Broadway and Washington Streets, Hanover*
*The Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover* invites interested members of
the public to a free lecture and slide show on Tuesday evening,
October 2nd at 7:15 p.m., at the Phoenix Masonic Lodge, Broadwayand
Washington Streets in Hanover. Marie Stella, landscape historian and
landscape designer, holds graduate certificates in Landscape Design
and Landscape Design History from Radcliffe College, Harvard
University and will be speaking.
In her Hanover lecture, Stella will discuss how a sustainable
landscape can address present resident needs without adversely
impacting the ability of future residents to meet new and changing
needs. Addressing environmental awareness, Stella will highlight
innovative ways to use plant material to clean air, soil and water and
to restore our ecological systems. Topics include dry gardening, plant
buffer zones, the lawn, and invasive species. New directions in water
management concentrate on the permeable ground plane, mulches and
natural swimming pools without chemicals. Heirloom and unusual
varieties of herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers bind us to our
past; Stella will discuss why it is important to preserve the full
range of genetic possibilities of such plants for the future. To

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) is coordinating, with the
Hanover Board of Health and the Hanover Police Department, a
nationwide one-day event to take back unwanted medications on
*Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Hanover Senior Center, 665 Center
Street, Hanover, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.*

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to
surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications
to law enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused or
unwanted substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for
the increasing abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and
an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

*A Night of Classics: Costume and Concert*

Consider yourself warmly invited to The Hanover Historical Society’s
/Night of Classics/! Join the Society in the always cozy nostalgic
Stetson House Barn for a performance by the Hingham Woodwind Quintet
and a gallery-talk by their curator, Rachel Lovett, on the
preservation of historic country clothing. The concert and
presentation will be sure to inspire the same refined, provincial
wistfulness of summer concerts in the Berkshires. Lastly, they will
round off the night with a candle-lit tour of the Stetson House’s
charming permanent collection, with special attention paid to its
lovely textiles. If you would care to join them in this brief escape
from the commotion of modern life, they will begin at /7:00 p.m. on
September 22nd/ and look forward to seeing you there!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Curry Ace Hardware will be having a free canning demonstration with
Connie Spiros on Tuesday, September 25th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
Connie teaches cooking classes at the Milton Council on Aging, as well
as at the Fruit Center and Milton Adult Education. You can watch
Connie on her own cooking show, /Meet Me in the Kitchen/, on Milton
Access TV. Curry Hardware held a canning demonstration at their Quincy
store, and after rave reviews decided to bring Connie to Hanover. She
will be demonstrating how to prepare and can her favorite salsa and
jam recipes as well as answering all your canning questions. Admission
is free.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Please join the Open Space Committee this coming Saturday morning at
their next hike. It has been great to see so many of you on the trails
this year! A reminder all walks are free and open to the public.
Their next walk is Saturday, September 22nd, at 9:30 a.m. at the Cedar
School and High School cross country trails. Officially known as the
Melzar Hatch Wildlands Trust, the cross country trails are the first
trail many generations of Hanoverians ever step foot on. Come see the
gamut of woodland treasures this compact trail system has to offer.
Park at Cedar School, 265 Cedar Street, Hanover. Please wear
appropriate sturdy shoes and bug spray with DEET for woodland walks.

Babysitter List offered to club members. The Hanover Newcomers Club is
a group of over 100 women, many of whom have young children. Many are
looking for babysitters for after school hours, evenings and weekends.
Some are in need of older girls/women to help out with children during
the day. Some need mother’s helpers. If you would like to be included

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
It is time again for the Friends of Hanover Music (FHM) annual Flea
Market Fundraiser. This year it will be held on Saturday, September
22nd from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Riley Hall front parking lot
in the center of Hanover.
You can help FHM raise funds for the music departments of all Hanover
schools in three ways:
They need donations! As you do your fall cleaning, don’t throw away
your “junk”. Your junk is someone else’s treasure. They will accept
items such as clothing, toys, books, sporting goods, small furniture,
etc. They will not accept electronics, appliances, televisions or
computer parts. Drop off time is 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. on September
22nd at Riley Hall. If you need to make other arrangements for an
earlier drop off, please contact Kathy Miller at (781) 826-5170 or

They also need volunteers! They will need volunteers for set-up,
clean-up and people to man the flea market in 2 hour shifts.

*/Please join the Hanover Firefighters on September 22nd from 10:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at B. Everett Hall Field in the center of town for
their Touch A Truck Fundraiser for the American Liver Foundation./*
Touch A Truck will be a fun filled family event that offers kids and
adults alike a chance to see the big rigs and equipment that travel
through our community every day. Get close to, touch and climb inside
and out of over 25 vehicles that will be on display. The growing list
of participants includes: Town of Hanover vehicles, Plymouth County
Sheriff, Massachusetts National Guard, PA Landers, Andy’s Towing, JF
Price, Carver Fire Department, Schlagger’s Towing, Pilgrim Paving,
Boston Medflight, Brewster Ambulance, Joseph Ingle Bus Company, and
Gallant Grader.
Along with the vehicles and equipment will be food, music,
demonstrations, bouncy houses and a helicopter landing (weather and
availability dependent) They will also have a candy drop so everyone
can start Halloween early! Come on down to B. Everett Hall Field (near
the bandstand) and bring the family for what promises to be a great
time for all!
Admission will be $3 per person or $5 for twopeople*. All proceeds
from this event will be donated to the American Liver Foundation (a
501(c)3 organization) in the name of Tom Boucher, a Hanover
Firefighter who lost his battle with liver disease one year ago.
