Stories from the Revolution: Hanover in the War for Independence

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Stories from the Revolution: Hanover in the War for Independence
with Stephen O’Neill, Executive Director, Hanover Historical Society

6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 16th, 2024
The John Curtis Free Library, 534 Hanover Street

This program, in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the American
Revolutionary War, tells the story of Hanover and its residents during the
conflict. Stories from the Revolution uses original objects and documents
from the Historical Society’s and other collections to illustrate how the
War changed the lives of the people of Hanover. These are the stories of
one town supporting the Patriot cause, a colonel who commanded a regiment
through five years of warfare, a family that faced disease and struggle, a
former slave who won his freedom, common soldiers who answered the call to
service, some of whom never returned, and a general Town Meeting that voted
in favor of Independence.

Sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

Feminine Care Drive

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Our Hanover Girl Scouts are having a Feminine Care Product Donation Drive
for local women in need.

Please help Girl Scout Troop 68239 by donating new/unopened items (pads,
tampons, etc.).

Please drop off your donation of feminine care products at the John Curtis
Library, 534 Hanover Street.

Donations of new/unused items will be distributed to local women’s
shelters and the Hanover Food Pantry.

Imagine if you could not afford your Feminine Care Products. 1 in 4
students struggle to afford products. 1 in 3 low-income women miss work,
school, and other events due to lack of access.

You can also make a cash donation to the cause by Venmo. Send to
@Alicia-Cleary-2 on Venmo. For more information, please e-mail Alicia at
amwalsh@hotmail.com or see the attached flyer.

The collection ends April 2nd.

Thank you for helping the Hanover Girl Scouts provide feminine care
products for local women in need.

Students – apply now for the best summer job in town!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Town of Hanover Summer Internship Program applications are now being
accepted for motivated high school and college students who want to gain
professional work experience, build skills such as time management,
teamwork, communication, leadership, and critical thinking, and explore new
interests while learning how Hanover town government operates. Interns must
demonstrate maturity and politeness, integrate well within the Town Hall
team environment, and work hard at their assignments. Summer Interns will
spend the majority of their time engaged in work for the Town Manager but
also will be assigned to other departments within Hanover town government.
Strong preference will be given to students and graduates of Hanover High
School, South Shore Vocational Technical High School, and those who live in
Hanover and attend/attended private high schools.

Expectations:
The Town of Hanover Summer Internship program will run from the end of this
school year until the start of the next academic year. Participants will be
expected to work four days a week for 30 hours, including 12-hour days each
Wednesday when Town Hall is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
As part of the 30 hours per week, Summer Interns will be required to attend
various evening and night meetings either in-person or via Zoom. Summer
Interns will be required to attend all Select Board meetings and a total of
5 meetings of different Hanover public bodies (e.g., Planning Board, Zoning
Board of Appeals, Advisory Committee, Conservation Commission, etc.). The
purpose of this expectation is for the Summer Interns to broaden their
understanding of how public bodies operate and how decisions are made at
the local government level.
Summer Interns will be assigned various tasks and responsibilities. Over
time, assignments will evolve to match the Intern’s skills, abilities,
and interests with the most pressing needs of the Town.
Summer Interns will be expected to write a 500-word essay at the conclusion
of their internship experience reflecting on what they learned during the
summer.

Application:
Interested candidates for the Town of Hanover Summer Internship program
must submit the following:
1. Cover Letter detailing in 500 words your interest in this program;
2. Resume;
3. Letter of Reference from a professor/teacher, coach, previous employer,
guidance counselor, etc.;
4. The application period for the 2024 Town of Hanover Summer Internship

be made in April.
5. Please email all application requirements to

Hanover Energy Choice – presentation and comment period

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Town of Hanover is developing a consumer-friendly electricity program
called Hanover Energy Choice. The program is an electricity aggregation,
which is a group electricity purchasing program for Hanover residents and
businesses. Through Hanover Energy Choice, the Town will use its collective
buying power to lock in long-term electricity supply prices that will not
change seasonally. While Hanover Energy Choice will not be able to
guarantee lower prices compared with National Grid’s Basic Service
prices, the Town is committed to working toward providing prices that are
competitive and stable.

When the program launches, electricity customers in Hanover will see a
change in the price that is used to calculate the Supply Services portion
of their National Grid electric bill, which is the part of the bill where
we pay for the electricity we use. National Grid will continue to deliver
electricity to Hanover and handle billing without interruption.

Before launching the program, the Town must develop an Aggregation Plan and
submit it to state regulators for review and approval. To ensure the public
has an opportunity to be a part of developing this program, the Town is
making its draft Aggregation Plan and associated documents available for
review and comment before beginning that regulatory review process. The
draft Aggregation Plan for Hanover Energy Choice will be available for
public review and comment from March 18th to April 17th. Those interested
in reviewing the plan and associated documents may download them from the
Town of Hanover website at
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=xqu240yPDeaMUVIKAPWy9dvCLaGzbxfgskmhrmf3jhtoqLt7nDO4RqoN783ZLADJ
or obtain copies from the Select Board Office in Hanover Town Hall, 550
Hanover Street. Hanover residents and business owners are encouraged to
review the plan and submit written comments via email to
janet.tierney@hanover-ma.gov or via U.S. Mail to: Hanover Town Hall,
Offices of the Select Board and Town Manager, 550 Hanover Street, Attn:
Julie Burke. Comments sent by mail must be received (not postmarked) by the
end of the comment period in order to be addressed.

An overview of the plan will be presented during the March 18, 2024, Select
Board meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in a
hybrid format with both in person attendees in the first-floor hearing room
of Hanover Town Hall, 550 Hanover Street, as well as remote attendees via
the Zoom platform.

Social Media and Socializing: Helping your kids feel and function their best on screen and off

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Sometimes there are programs that are easily accessible to Hanover
residents that are too good and too important to not share. So, I am
bending my “Hanover events only” rule and sending this along!

Social Media and Socializing: Helping your kids feel and function their
best on screen and off

Sunday, March 17th, 7:30 p.m. – With Director of the Massachusetts
Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University Dr. Elizabeth
Englander via Zoom (only)

Before the pandemic, screen use, anxiety, and social problems (like
bullying and fighting) were top concerns for parents. The last few years
have made some of these issues even more challenging. This talk will
examine how kids are doing emotionally and socially, in light of the ways
kids use screens, gaming, and social media, and how these impact challenges
in school, like bullying and friendship skills. Research will be
summarized, and practical approaches to family life that can help children
develop emotional resilience, healthy social skills and friendships, and
sensible screen and social media habits will be discussed during this
presentation. Dr. Englander will discuss how to move forward to a healthier
“new normal” and how to help parents be most productive in guiding their
children towards a full social and emotional recovery.

For more information about Dr. Englander, please go to:

.

This program is sponsored by the First Parish of Norwell’s Mental Health
Action team and is open to the public. Registration is not required, and
the program will be recorded and viewable on-line here:
