Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Looking for April vacation ideas? The Hanover Cultural Council is
excited to announce *Kite Day* for Hanover’s children. On Saturday,
April 14, Dr. Wallace Kemp will again open his field at 688 Main
Street from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to anyone interested in flying a
kite (pending good weather). This field is situated on a hill which
affords wonderful kite-flying on a moderately windy day. As the field
is part of larger conservation area of the Wildlands Trust of
Southeastern Massachusetts, there is plenty of space for all. Don
McCasland, the Program Director of the Blue Hill Observatory and an
avid kite-lover, will also be at the field to provide great tips on
kite-flying technique.

In conjunction with this event, the Friends of the John Curtis Free
Library will host a *kite-making program* on Saturday, April 14 from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. downstairs at the John Curtis Free Library.
Don McCasland will provide kite kits and show you how to construct
your kite. This event is recommended to children ages 4-8 with a
parent and for 8 and over without a parent (the parent must otherwise
remain in the library). The program lasts for about an hour. These
activities are free (funded by the Hanover Cultural Council and the
Friends of the John Curtis Free Library) and open to the public, but
you must register your child to make a kite at the children’s
circulation desk at the library. There are 40 spaces reserved from
10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., another 40 spaces from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00
p.m.

*How you can be a part of this year’s Hanover Day celebration!*
The Hanover Cultural Council is proud to announce that the seventh
annual Hanover Day celebration will take place on Saturday, June 16,
2012. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at B. Everett
Hall/Sylvester Field on Route 139 in Hanover Center. Mark your
calendar now; details will be forthcoming!
Applications for craft, business and civic group booths are now being
accepted. Spaces (12×12 size) are $45 prior to May 15. After May 15,
spaces are $55. Please visit www.hanoverday.com for more information,

The traditional “Taste of Hanover” food court is being completely
revised. Applications for food vendors are now available. 12×12 spaces
are limited, and are $150 each. Please contact Hanover Cultural

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

After that last e-blast from South Shore Vo-Tech, I thought I would
take a minute to provide another quick update regarding the students
at Hanover High, too.

First of all, please join Hanover High students in celebrating “Pi
Day” today! My daughter informed me that 3/14 is also Albert
Einstein’s birthday, an auspicious occasion, for sure.

But more importantly, I am delighted to announce that Hanover High
students Shestin Thomson and Maya Collins have done so well in the
Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Science Fair that they have
qualified for the Massachusetts State Science Fair to be held at MIT
in May of this year. Additionally, I have it on good authority that
Shestin won a Naval Academy research award on top of the regional
award.

Maya’s project is titled “Effects of Music on Memory”, and
Shestin’s project is “The Effects of Blade Pitch and Number on the
Electrical Output of Turbines”. I had the good fortune to attend the
local Hanover Science Fair a couple of weeks ago and I can tell you
that there were scores of outstanding projects right here in Hanover
alone. For these two young ladies to advance from Hanover’s Science
Fair and then again from the regional competition to the state
competition is simply amazing. Congratulations to both of them and to
their proud parents!

The South Shore Vocational Technical High School continues to provide

the latest!

*TRANSITION PLANNING: High School to Adulthood **WORKSHOP*

Marilyn Weber, presenter from the Federation for Children with Special
Needs, will conduct this workshop. Federation workshops are free to
parents and open to the public.

This workshop addresses the effective use of the IEP and the
Massachusetts Transition Planning Form for students who are ages 14
– 22. Individualized, person centered planning of curriculum and
supports throughout high school leads to better post high school
outcomes and opportunities in education, training, and/or employment
for students with disabilities. Discussion includes age of majority,
self determination and self advocacy, life skill development and
preparing students to pursue as independent an adult life as possible.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
This isn’t the first time I have been excited to hear from
Hanover’s budding leaders, but each time I do I feel so proud of
“our” kids. Read on! This missive is courtesy of my friend Troy
Bridson, Class of 2014’s Class President.
Come support the Hanover High Class of 2014 by attending the Auction
Fundraiser on Tuesday, March 27th at 6:30 p.m., in the High School
Multi-Purpose Room. Over 30 exciting items will be auctioned off.
Auction items include gym memberships, gift certificates, and
autographed memorabilia. You can even bid on a one-week Maine family
vacation!

If you can’t join the sophomores in person, there will be a link
posted to the Hanover Schools website at www.hanoverschools.org

that will list each auction item by Friday, March 16th. Bids for
auction items can be submitted on-line via the link.

The South Shore YMCA in Hanover, the South Shore Natural Science
Center and Sustainable Hanover are collaborating to empower and
educate healthy eating, sustainability, community connection and
environmental responsibility through a thought-provoking film series
called /What ARE We Eating??? /

“Our collaborative effort began with an idea to build a garden in
2009” says Kim Engle, Arts and Education Director at the South Shore
YMCA; “we collaborated with Sustainable Hanover and found ourselves
with a portable greenhouse, a successful sustainability fundraising
event and the realization that we need to do more education.”
Sustainable Hanover and the South Shore YMCA continued their joint
efforts with a few small film events, kids’ events and teen events.
In September of 2011, the Y began its official partnership with the
South Shore Natural Science Center and the film series was realized.

The Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award Committee is proud to
announce that ROGER A. LESLIE, SR. has been selected as the recipient
of the 11th Annual Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award.

This Award is presented annually to an individual who best exemplifies
the Spirit of Hanover by voluntarily giving selflessly of their time,
energy and talent to the Town and its citizens thus enriching our
lives, fostering a true sense of community and inspiring us all to a
higher level of service.

Roger is a lifelong resident of the Town and has an outstanding record
of service to the community extending over fifty years. A small sample
of his considerable efforts include his long-time service as a call
fire-fighter for the Town; his service as Chairman of the Hackett’s
Pond Dam Study Committee as well as involvement with the Hanover
Historical Society; the Stetson House, where he has served on the
Board of Directors and as an Overseer; the Hanover Council on Aging,
where he has served as Chairman of the fundraising drive to assist
with the purchase of additional furnishings, equipment and programs
for the Senior Center; the Tri-Town Rotary, where Roger has held many
offices and has twice been named as a Paul Harris Fellow; and 50 years
of involvement with the Phoenix Masonic Lodge. Those who have attended
a Hanover Day event or a Hanover Memorial Day Parade would be sure to
have enjoyed the fruits of Roger’s considerable talents as they were
treated to his restored antique fire engines including the 1919 Model
T.
