As the town, its concerned parents, and its beloved teachers continue
to process the challenging School Committee meeting of this past
Wednesday, we are all also gearing up for the next important meeting
in the budget process.
Mark your calendar for this coming Tuesday, January 10th at 7:00 p.m.
at Hanover High School when the School Committee and the Town Manager
will meet first in open session (followed by an executive session) to
discuss the big picture regarding this year’s town finances.
If you attended this past Wednesday’s meeting, or especially if you
missed it, this meeting is one of the answers to the question that was
raised the other night, “which are the important meetings? What
should we go to?” This is a big one, folks. See you there.

This just in from our stalwart Commander Ray Miller at the Legion on
King Street!

First: Christmas was exceptional for the troops from Hanover and all
over the South Shore who are serving in Afghanistan as they received
several boxes of items they needed, like socks, razors and many more
essentials. Thanks to all who contributed.

Happenings at the American Legion this month:

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
This just in from Kellyann Draheim, coach of the Hanover/Rockland High
School gymnastics team!
“Hanover/Rockland girls’ gymnastics came out of the gates strong
as they finished their first meet January 4th with a win over
Carver/Sacred Heart/Duxbury by a score of 124.6 to 120.2.
On floor, Kaitlyn Powers’ rivoting performance of a 9.2 awarded her
first place for Hanover, while her teammate, Brittany Ainslie, tied
for 2nd with an 8.6 with Carver’s Nate Singer. Marina Goba, also of
Hanover, received 3rd place with a personal best of an 8.4. Carver’s
Nicole Orlando placed first on bars with an 8.6, while Kaitlyn Powers
and Nate Singer tied for 2nd with 7.9. Hanover’s Mikaela Draheim,
took 3rd with a 7.5.
Kaitlyn Powers took another 1st on beam with a 7.9, Brittany Ainslie
tied with Nicole Orlando for 2nd with a 7.6, while Mikaela Draheim was
awarded 3rd place. Brittany Ainslie’s powerful vault was awarded
first place with an 8.9, while Kaitlyn Powers received third with an
8.35. On the all-around, Hanover’s Kaitlyn Powers finished strong
with a 33.3 winning her the honor of first place, while teammate
Brittany Ainslie was close behind with a 32.4, placing 2nd. Well done
Hanover/Rockland Girls High School Gymnastics!”

Hanover Youth Athletic Association (HYAA) has opened on-line
registration for their spring baseball and softball programs for
children in grades K – 9th. On-line registration, which opened on
January 1st, will run for one month until January 31st. Parents may
register their children on-line for HYAA’s spring baseball and
softball programs at www.hyaa.net
. You may also register “in person” on two Tuesdays; January 10th
and 24th (re-scheduled from 1/17) at the Hanover High School from 7:00
p.m. – 8:30 p.m. either night. Family discounts for 3 or more children
in the same sport can be done on-line as well. Please know that your
child must be registered for spring baseball or softball in order to
play summer ball.

HYAA is also still accepting late registrations for the 2012 spring
soccer program. Parents of players at the high school level only may
register through March 1st on-line with no additional fees. Parents of
players in Grades K – 8th may also continue to register late, but
will be assessed a $25 late fee and may be on a waiting list until
positions become available. All wait-listed players will be notified
if and when they are placed on teams.

“With the buzz surrounding the school budget crisis in Hanover, I
wanted to pass along two EASY ways to get more money for our schools.
They both only take three minutes to register for, and our schools can
benefit from us taking the time to do so.

1. Stop and Shop A+ Program:

If you have a Stop and Shop card, now is the time to register it
on-line with the Stop and Shop A+ Program! It’s free and easy and for
every dollar you spend from now until March, Stop and Shop will donate
money to our schools. Time is of the essence on this one.

and click on “register your card” on the left-hand side of the
page to register on-line. You can register for:

• Center School (code 09333)
• Sylvester School (code 09350)
• Middle School (code 07457)
• Hanover High School (code 10540)
• Cedar School (code 07296)

Each month, the amount of CASH awarded will be updated on the Stop and
Shop website. You can track the amount of points you earn for our
schools by checking your grocery receipt. Our schools will receive a
check at the end of the program.

2. Target REDcard

Simply log on to http://www.target.com/tcoe
, and register your Target REDcard to get 1% of your purchases sent to
the schools. The Target REDcard also gives you 5% back on your own
purchases.

Currently there are only 25 cards registered to: Center School (ID#
59318), 3 to Sylvester School (ID# 59320), 26 to Cedar School (ID#
59317), 14 to the Middle School (ID# 59321), and 11 to the High School
(ID# 59319). Every August Target will send a check to our principals.

If we could get 1% of every purchase made by a Hanover resident to go
to our schools, I can only imagine how much money we could earn. Even
residents without children in school could pick any of the public
schools to donate to. It costs them nothing and better schools =
better property values.

parents and family and friends in other towns can do it too. Together
we can make a big difference!”

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Last night’s Hanover School Committee (SC) meeting featured one of
the largest turnouts in this writer’s memory. Teachers and parents
filled the multi-purpose room of the new high school to standing-room
only. Even given that the discussion surrounded the sobering subject
of the proposed budget cuts to the schools in the Town of Hanover, as
one person said to me, and I am paraphrasing, “regardless, these are
good times”. She was of course referring to the number of people in
the room who were showing an interest in the education of Hanover’s
children and the state of the budget in the Town of Hanover.
The School Committee read a statement at the start of the budget
discussion that was both unusual for the town’s normal course of
business, but that also opened the door for what “Around Town on the
Web” hopes will be continued supportive discussions between teachers
and parents and the School Committee regarding the current teacher
contract negotiations and the town’s overall budget.
The statement read by chair Les Hayward essentially said that the
School Committee had offered the teachers a one year “no step
raises” and “no cost of living increase” contract that also
guaranteed no teacher layoffs. This contract was not accepted by the
teacher’s union negotiating team. The teachers made a counter offer
for a three year deal that was off the record, but according to the
SC, the teachers’ counter offer was not accepted by the SC’s
negotiating team because it was anticipated that by the SC’s
calculations, in year 2 of that three-year deal, the pay raises would
amount to approximately $650,000, and in year 3 of that deal the pay
raises would be in excess of $800,000. According to members of the SC
last night, the town cannot afford those costs.
Further, the School Committee was presented with four budget scenarios
by Dr. Nash that had various requests for potential new revenue from
the town (the source of those funds was debated) and that proffered
undesired cuts to existing services provided today to Hanover’s
students. All four budgets included the cost of step raises but no
cost of living increase. Members of the audience offered suggestions
and impassioned pleas for how to meet the gap between existing revenue
and anticipated costs.
Since “Around Town on the Web” tries to remain politically
neutral, I will refrain from subjective comment on the current state
of budget negotiations. Suffice it to say, however, that the open
dialog and well attended open meetings will surely move us forward
toward Town Meeting in May with less smoke and fewer mirrors and more
honest and frank discussions between everyone in town. Let’s
collectively make sure it continues to be in the best interests of our
children, the teachers who teach them, and the entire town of Hanover.
