Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Looking for some indoor winter fun for your children? The Friends of
the John Curtis Free Library are pleased to announce *two six-week art
programs* for children to begin at the library in *February*.

*Kreative Kids*, taught by Karen Cass (a Hanover artist and private
educator, www.karencass.com
), will provide children ages 3 – 5 with an introduction to basic art
techniques while focusing on nature and the winter season. This class
will meet on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the library
beginning on February 8 through March 21 (skipping February 22 during
school vacation week).

Pam Golden, a local sculptor and art teacher (www.pamgolden.com

) will teach children ages 6 – 8 in her *Faces and Figures Workshop*
to create clay animals, masks, puppets, and more. This class will meet
on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the children’s room at the
library beginning February 1 and will run straight through until March
7th.

Each class will support 10 children and is fully funded by the Friends
of the Library with participants asked to pay only a $10 supply fee.
Registration is happening now in person at the children’s
circulation desk at the library with your $10 supply payment.
Preference will be given to children who have not taken this class

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Bring in the Chinese New Year at Quan’s Kitchen in Hanover on Sunday,
January 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Professional Firefighters
of Hanover have teamed up with the Hanson Children’s Museum to host a
fun afternoon of meat raffles and cultural performances. Enjoy a
sampling of Quan’s delectable menu and support two organizations in
the process!
The proceeds from this event will benefit the Hanson Children’s
Museum’s Traveling Exhibit. As Juvelyn Hartweg of the Hanson
Children’s Museum writes, “On behalf of our board, I can tell you
that we depend very much on these fundraisers to provide this free
programming. Our intent is as we await the grants that will fund our
building from state and local government, we need to meet the families
of Plymouth County to familiarize them with our mission and goals.
When we open, we hope that we’ll have a line out the door!!!”

Tickets are $25 which gets you 25 raffle tickets and a chance to win
fabulous door prizes and appetizers. Enjoy a lion dance and several

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
After a month and a half of public meetings concerning the school
budget, the Hanover School Committee voted last night to request an
increase in their budget from the Town of Hanover. The request comes
on the heels of weeks of public and private discourse around town
concerning possible budget cuts and includes the following:
· A $140,000 decrease in overall costs due to the planned outsourcing
of the SPED transportation contract
· Reductions in secretarial hours at the district level, no pay
increases for principals, directors and central office administrators,
and net savings from a known teacher retirement
· The addition of a SPED teacher at Cedar and the Middle School, and
a .4 SPED teacher at the High School
· Two additional classroom teachers at the Center/Sylvester School to
address burgeoning class enrollments in those two buildings
· Legally mandated step increases for Hanover’s teachers, but no
cost of living increases (both of which are subject to continued
contract negotiations).
Some in the audience were calling this budget a “level services”
budget, although others would disagree based on the unknowns in the
forthcoming negotiations with the North River Collaborative (NRC) over
the SPED transportation contract. The School Department maintains that
the proposed NRC-provided SPED transportation is an equivalent service
if not better than what is currently provided. Either way, the
proposed budget exceeds the monies currently projected to be available
from the town by approximately $393,043.
Previously discussed potential budget cuts that were NOT included in
this budget proposed by the School Committee:
· A Spanish teacher, an Engineering teacher, and a .8 Chemistry
teacher at the High School
· A .2 music and a .2 art teacher at Cedar
· A fifth grade teacher at the Middle School
· Reading Specialists at Center/Sylvester and Cedar Schools
· Any other teacher layoffs
Fiscal 2012’s overall school budget is $23,352,796. The town
currently predicts a $437,066 increase to be possible in the school
budget for Fiscal 2013. The School Committee voted last night to
request that money and an additional $393,043, for a total request of
$24,182,905. The School Committee is hoping that current negotiations
with the town’s unions regarding the town’s health insurance and
the potential decision at Town Meeting to add a meals’ tax in
Hanover, along with increased Chapter 70 monies from the state will
make up the difference.
There will be a meeting between the Selectmen and the School Committee
on Monday, January 23 at Town Hall. The School Committee is on the
Selectmen’s agenda for 8:00 p.m.

great meet against Brockton High School on Saturday, January 7th. Once

at the home of Anne Fitzgerald at 45 Millers Lane on Thursday, January
19th at 7:30 p.m. Agenda items include the 2011 grant awards, the

singer/DJ Jim Plunkett on March 24th. Proceeds from this event support

Committee is absolutely the best way to get involved in and come to
understand the big picture of the town’s business. For all of you
who have been following the school budget picture for the first time

how it gets allocated, I strongly urge your involvement on the
Advisory Committee! Further, a mid-year opening is a nice way to get

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The South Shore YMCA in Hanover, the South Shore Natural Science
Center and Sustainable Hanover are collaborating to empower and
educate healthy eating, sustainability, community connection and
environmental responsibility through a thought-provoking film series
called “/What ARE We Eating?”/

“Our collaborative effort began with an idea to build a garden in
2009” says Kim Engle, Arts and Education Director at the South Shore
YMCA; “we collaborated with Sustainable Hanover and found ourselves
with a portable greenhouse, a successful sustainability fundraising
event and the realization that we need to do more education.”
Sustainable Hanover and the South Shore YMCA continued their joint
efforts with a few small film events, kids’ events and teen events.
In September of 2011, the Y began its official partnership with the
South Shore Natural Science Center and the film series was realized.

The series begins on January 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the South Shore
Natural Science Center with the film /Food Matters/ and continues on
the 3rd Thursday of each month through March. Each month will feature
a different film, discussion, and guest speakers centered around
community, food, nutrition, farming, and sustainability. This
month’s film is:

/Food Matters/ — but is it the answer to cancer? This documentary
discusses the possibilities of improving chronic illness with simple
self-care and aims to further jolt the trillion dollar worldwide
so-called ‘sickness industry’ by declaring a range of
scientifically verifiable solutions for curing disease naturally.
Nutritionists-turned-filmmakers James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten
Bosch, have produced a bold film based on a challenging and
potentially startling message; that with the right kind of foods,
supplements, and detoxification processes, we can prevent, arrest, and
even reverse chronic illness. “There are simple lifestyle changes
that we as individuals can make to start reversing the increasing
levels of serious illness,” said Bosch.

The Hanover Diversity Committee will host a Martin Luther King, Jr.
Breakfast on Monday, January 16th at Riley Hall, located at 17 Silver
Street. A pancake breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by a
program featuring the Hanover High School women’s choir VOX.

The cost is $2.00 per person or $5.00 per family as well as a food
item for the Hanover Food Pantry. Reservations are not needed. For
