Hanover High School Soccer update

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover High School Boys Soccer team defeated Mashpee in their
first round tournament match by a score of 5 – 2 on Monday night.
Tyler Fitzgerald started the scoring for Hanover off a corner kick.
Brian Wheeler and Hank Foster added scores in the 1st half as well as
Hanover surged to a 3-0 half time lead. In the 2nd half, Eric Miller
and Derek Healy added goals pushing Hanover to a 5-0 lead before
Mashpee scored 2 late goals. Hanover travels to 2nd seeded
Dover-Sherburne Wednesday night (November 9th) for a tough second
round game.

Unfortunately, the Hanover High School Girls Soccer team had their
tournament run cut short by Old Colony Regional on Sunday afternoon. A
first half score by Alicia Varraso was equaled by Old Colony in the
second half and after 2 over time periods the game went to penalty
kicks. It took nine penalty rounds to decide the match with Old Colony
squeaking out the win. It was a tough loss indeed for the Hanover
girls, who nevertheless had a great season overall.

Special thanks to my reporter in the field(s) (literally), Geoff
Hoffman, who can be reached at ghoffman@aebarnes.com

for more information about Hanover High School Soccer!

Hanover High soccer news

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover High School Boys Soccer Team has earned a preliminary
round bye in the MIAA state soccer tournament and will host a home
tournament game vs. Mashpee High School at Hanover High on Monday,
November 7th at 7:00 p.m. The boys compiled a 12-3-3 record this
season, going unbeaten for a stretch of 6 weeks playing in the highly
competitive Patriot League. They are also Fisher Division Champions
for 2011!

The Hanover Girls Soccer Team also earned a preliminary round bye and
qualified for the MIAA state tournament. The girls will play today,
Sunday, November 6th against Old Colony Regional Vocational High
School at 1:00 p.m. at Old Colony. According to Hanover coach Garth
Nelson, the girls are having one of their best seasons in the past 5
or 6 years, and despite some big graduation losses last year, the
younger girls have stepped up to fill the void.

Tournament games are controlled by MIAA and have gate admission fees
of $5 adults / $3 students. For more information about Hanover High
soccer, please contact ATOTW ace reporter Geoff Hoffman at
ghoffman@aebarnes.com

Open Space event this Sunday

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Join Hanover Open Space: November 6th, 9:00 a.m.
Looking for a way to get involved in your town; have a teenager that
needs some community service time?

Special places across Hanover need your help. Volunteer for a few
hours and you’ll become part of the movement to protect Hanover’s
landscapes and landmarks for everyone, forever.

Please join Hanover’s Open Space Committee at the Stasiluk-Nava
property on Sunday, November 6th at 9:00 a.m. There is sure to be
something for everyone. We will clear brush from the field and stone
wall, as well there is an opportunity to help clear and restore an
existing perennial flowerbed near the parking lot. Please wear layers.
Bring clippers and gloves, if you have them. The property is located
on Center Street in between Myrtle Street and the Senior Center.

The OSC is on the lookout for individuals and groups from our
community that want to take an active role in our trails and open
spaces. In conjunction with our existing trail walks, we will host a
series of volunteer events in the coming year. We are happy to tailor
events for a group, or provide opportunities for folks that have a
particular interest.

Volunteer Positions can vary from reporting on trail conditions,
monitoring wildlife, offering to give a tour on your favorite trail:

A few opportunities we can currently offer:
· Trail Maintenance and Monitoring. Keep us up to date on your local
trails’ conditions and use.
· Help install improved trail signage and marking at locations
throughout town.
· Historical research of open spaces throughout town.
· Bird nest box monitoring at Nava Field on Center Street.
· Vernal Pool Certifications. With little more than a clipboard and a
camera you can help us officially certify some of the potential vernal
pools in town.
· Other ideas; let us know!

Of course for some volunteer opportunities, there are specific skill
sets that would be important for a prospective volunteer to possess.
But today the most important qualities are curiosity, willingness to
take responsibility, and a willingness to learn about these wonderful
properties and all they contain.

Come join us, and be a part of promoting Hanover’s best assets to
our community. Please send your full name, address, telephone and/or
e-mail to hanoveropenspace@gmail.com

or contact either of our co-chairs:
Mary Dunn at mdunn@post03.curry.edu

Hal Thomas at halhanover@msn.com

It would be helpful to know your availability both days of the week
and time of day and any special experience you may have.

Thanks!

Cathy H-B

/Due to hectic holiday schedules, busy travel plans and inclement
weather in the Northeast, blood donations can decline during this time
of year. By adding a blood donation to your Thanksgiving traditions, a
blood shortage can be averted. For those in good health, taking just
one hour out of a busy holiday schedule to give blood is an active way
of showing thanks./
