Dear fellow Hanoverians:
South Shore Recycling Cooperative member towns will host four
household hazardous waste collections this fall. Residents may attend
their own town’s event at no charge.
Collections are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. as follows:

*9/24 Plymouth* DPW, 169 Camelot Drive
*10/1 Weymouth* DPW, 120 Winter Street (Unwanted medications also
accepted)
*10/29 Hanover* Transfer Station, (Route 139), with *Norwell *and
*Rockland*
*11/7 Middleborough *Town Hall, 10 Nickerson Avenue (no paint)

Residents of those and of member towns *Cohasset, Duxbury, Hingham,
Kingston and Scituate *may attend other member towns’ collections at
their own town’s expense. To do so, request and bring a signed
*Authorization Form* from your town’s Department of Public Works.
Some towns may limit subsidized quantities to 15 gallons or 30 pounds.
Visitors from any town without permission may attend for a fee of
$43/15 gallons or 30 pounds of waste. Commercial generators may call
ahead to (781) 879-4435 to arrange disposal and payment.
*Bring*: Oil based paint (except Middleboro), stains, solvents,
gasoline, automotive fluids, pesticides, photography and pool
chemicals, acids, bases, and poisons in secure, labeled containers.
*Do not bring:* industrial, pathological and medical waste,
radioactive materials, pressurized gas cylinders or explosives.
*Oil-based paint,* *propane tanks, motor oil, antifreeze, auto and
rechargeable batteries, and fluorescent lamps *are collected regularly
by some towns and some retailers. Residents should use those services

Latex paint and driveway sealer are *messy, but not hazardous*. If not
recyclable as described below, dry with absorbent material and dispose
with trash (keep lid off).
*Usable leftover latex paint* will be collected and recycled into new
paint products at locations near household hazardous waste events by
The Paint Exchange LLC of North Scituate, MA. These pilot collections
are made possible by a grant provided by Mass DEP. For locations, and

Residents who turn in a* toxic mercury* thermometer, thermostat or
other mercury item may swap it for a digital thermometer. This program
is sponsored by *Covanta at SEMASS*.

Hanover Youth Hockey is pleased to announce their 6th Annual Golf
Tournament to be held Friday September 30th at the South Shore Country
Club in Hingham. The Tournament will begin with a 12:30 p.m. Shotgun
Florida Scramble. The Tournament is welcome to all friends of Hanover
Hockey and anyone that wants to enjoy an early fall day filled with
golf, dinner, dancing, raffles and auction. Fees for golfers are
$135.00 per player. Dinner and dancing will follow the golf portion of
the day. Guests who would like to attend the dinner and auction
portion of the evening may purchase tickets for $35.00.

All proceeds from this event will benefit Hanover Youth Hockey, a
nonprofit youth hockey organization for the children and skaters of
Hanover.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Newcomers is a social club for women who enjoy making new
friends and participating in various activities including social
outings, family events, and community service. One need not be “new”
to Hanover to be a member and the fall is a great time to join! New
member events will be happening throughout the next few months and
playgroups are forming now too. The board has been busy planning some
great family activities as well as “ladies only” events. Come meet
some Newcomers members and find out what the club has to offer.

Join Newcomers at their “Welcome Back Social” on Wednesday September
14th from 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. This event is casual and open-house
style, so feel free to come anytime and bring a friend or neighbor.

Heather Meagher will be on site for anyone interested in signing up
for playgroup or joining the club.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Vehicle crashes are the Number One killer of teenagers in America.
Nearly 6,000 teens die annually in such accidents, according to the
most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. Because of inexperience, many teens lack the skills
and knowledge required to be safe drivers. Statistics demonstrate that
teen involvement in crashes declines considerably as young drivers
gain experience.

Ford Motor Company and the Massachusetts Highway Safety Division are
sponsoring an event called “No Distractions, Just Drive” at the
Hanover Mall on Saturday, September 24th from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The Kiss 108 mobile unit will be on-site. Hanover’s own Risky
Business Band (formerly Political Extinction) will be playing outside
in the parking lot, too. See attached flyer for more details.

Stop by the JUST DRIVE booth in the mall any time between today and
the event on Saturday September 24th and sign up to drive the Ford
Driving Skills for Life Course at the Hanover Mall on the 24th or just
come by for the fun!

The Hanover Cultural Council is now seeking funding proposals for
community-oriented arts, humanities, and science programs!

The Hanover Cultural Council has set an October 14 postmark deadline
for organizations, schools and individuals to apply for grants that
support cultural activities in the community.

According to Council Chairperson Katie Duff, these grants can support
a variety of artistic projects and activities in Hanover including
exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies or
performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

The Hanover Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local
Cultural Councils (LCC) serving all 351 cities and towns in the
Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural
funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based
projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state
legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts
Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each
community.

This year, the Hanover Cultural Council will distribute about $3,870in
grants. Previously funded projects include: classical piano concerts
with Inna Muravnik at the John Curtis Library, an “Introduction to
Birding in Hanover” with Massachusetts Audubon, artists in residence
in the Hanover Schools, sponsorship of groups in Hanover including the
Harbor Choral Arts Society and the Hanover Diversity Committee.

The Friends of the John Curtis Free Library are very pleased to
announce the winners of their summer raffle baskets. Congratulations
to Cathy Campo who won the Kanani/American Girl Basket, Griffin
Corrick who won the Hanover Raffle Basket, and Peter Whitney who won
the Red Sox/Good Life Basket. Many, many thanks to all who
participated in this annual event and helped raise hundreds of dollars
for library programs and passes.

The Friends of the John Curtis Free Library extend their sincere
gratitude to all of the wonderful local businesses who made these
baskets possible: Alvin Hollis, the South Shore YMCA, Trader Joe’s,
Wild Birds Unlimited, Avitabile Fine Jewelers, Crossroads Café and
Deli, Gunther Tooties, Hilliard’s House of Candy, Curry ACE
Hardware, Nella Pasta, Sommer’s Bounty (homemade jams and jellies),
Storybook Cove, the Toy Box, Hingham Institution for Savings, Rockland

Please join us on September 18th to officially open the new Hanover
High School. We are currently in phase two which involves the
demolition of the old high school and the installation of additional
driveway and sports fields.

Dedication is from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception and
tours from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Girl Scout Fall Registration Night for new and returning girls and
their families will be held at the John Curtis Free Library on Monday,
September 12th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Girl Scouts include
Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors!

Please join Hanover’s Girl Scouts for their annual fall registration
for girls and families interested in learning more and/or joining any
level of Girl Scouts in Hanover.

Some current Girl Scouts will be present to share their experiences,
as well as to help the little ones enjoy some fun activities while
parents get all their questions answered and registration details
worked out.

For your convenience you can print, and then fill in by hand, the
“Girl” and “Adult” registration forms before arriving at the
