Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Youth Hockey Instructional Program Registration

We are looking for a few “new” players!!!

Who:

All boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 8 who like to have fun
and want to learn how to skate and play hockey!!!!!

Where and When:

Beginning in early October, there will be one game per weekend at
Pilgrim Rink in Hingham. In addition to this game, there is an
optional skills session every Sunday at Bavis Rink in Rockland. Full
equipment is required.

Tuition for the 2011/2012 season is $550. Tuition includes practice
time, a game every weekend, and hockey skills development with
O’Sullivan hockey every Sunday evening. All players receive a jersey
and trophy.

How to get started:

Registration will be Monday, September 26th and Tuesday, September
27th at the Hanover Middle School from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

HYAA runs youth athletic programs for children in grades K through 8
and living in Hanover who would like to play baseball, softball,
basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, and/or wrestling.
HYAA is a non-profit organization that supports Hanover youth sports
programs. 100% of fees collected are put back into the program to
cover expenses for new fields, equipment, training, insurance, and
uniforms. HYAA is an entirely volunteer run organization. Questions or

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Who’s watching you? Find out on Thursday, September 15, 2011, when
Eyes on Owls presents a live owl program in conjunction with the
Hanover Garden Club at 7:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Hall Lodge on Broadway
at Four Corners. All who attend are in for some fun with educational
close-up views of these secretive birds of prey. Naturalist Marcia
Wilson will present “Who’s Watching You? Owls of the World.”

Wilson introduces the audience to owls found in New England as well as
other parts of the world. A slide show begins the program by
showcasing colorful wildlife photos by her husband Mark Wilson. Marcia
imitates the owls’ calls herself, paying special attention to the more
common owls that we might encounter in our area. After a hooting
lesson and much audience participation, Marcia brings out the live
owls one at a time. With each owl perched securely on her gloved hand,
she walks out among the audience with six or seven owls. There is
plenty of time for close-up views, photos, and questions.

Each owl presented has a permanent disability which prevents it from
surviving in the wild. All the owls are legally permitted by the state
and federal agencies for use in environmental educational programs.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
One thing I absolutely love about writing “Around Town on the Web”
is how I see us pull together as a community…especially during
stressful weeks like this past week. Between Hurricane Irene and the
continued house breaks, nerves are fraying all over Hanover. But
instead of lashing out at each other, we are joining in and pitching
in to help our neighbors.
Before I go any further, I have one more National Grid power update
for those of you who are still without electricity. A reader (who also
happens to be a Selectman!) wrote in and let me know that individual
homeowners are able to get an estimate for when their particular house
will be back with electricity. Of course you have to use a smartphone
or borrow a computer and power somewhere to get this info, but it’s
pretty cool that it even exists, and I am sure there are some of you
out there who will use this info right away. So, go to this webpage:

and follow the directions therein. You have to create an on-line
account (if you don’t have one already) and give some identifying
information, but you can both report an outage as well as get an
estimate for when your particular house will be back with power with
that system.
I also wanted to let you know that I have gotten several e-mails from
literally random but generous readers who wanted to offer their homes
and electricity and a home-cooked meal to anyone who needed it. While
I think that sort of thing is better handled by the bighearted
homeowner themselves; it sure was a nice gesture and I was happy to
make referrals if I knew of anyone in need. I also received several
pleas for unused generators and the like and referred residents to the
Hanover Emergency Management Agency as that is well within their
purview to assist with. Concerned residents who live near or far from
the break-ins wrote in with tips regarding alarm systems, dogs,
electronics inventories and the like. And I never cease to be amazed
by the strong women in this community who have been victims of a
house-break but who call or write to me with their news so that others
can be vigilant again.
I love helping to make connections and bring people together here in
Hanover. Have I mentioned lately that “together we make this town
great”???!!!!

Hanover Boys Club) offers a couple of FREE Zumba classes. Again this
year, she is pleased to offer FREE BASIC ZUMBA on Tuesday, September
6th at 5:15 p.m. and FREE ZUMBA (little more advanced) on Friday,
September 9th at 8:45 a.m. Both classes are in the studio at the
Hanover Police Boys Club located behind the Hanover Town Hall. These

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I regret that I have to bring you this unsettling news, but it is
nonetheless important to share so that we can watch out for each
other. On Wednesday, August 31st, there were two more daytime house
break-ins here in Hanover. As with previous occurrences earlier this
summer, the break-ins occurred on a main road, Webster and Cedar
Streets this time, and in the morning, this time sometime between 9:00
a.m. – 11:00 a.m. One unusual difference: at one house there was a
dog in the back yard behind a fence, so the thieves kicked in the
front door (rather than the back door as in previous breaks). Items
stolen were “quick-hit items” including electronics like a TV and
an Xbox, and jewelry, just as in the previous break-ins back in July
and late June. That brings us to a total of 10 break-ins with a
similar pattern within the past two months right here in Hanover.

Once again, this information originally came to me from a good friend
who had been victimized but nonetheless wanted to sound the alarm for
all of us. I love her indomitable spirit! With the kids going back to
school next week, houses will be empty. Talk to your neighbors and let
them know your schedule so that they can keep an eye on your house for
you. If you notice any unusual activity, do not hesitate to call the
Hanover Police Department at 911 in a pressing situation, or the
business line at (781) 826-3231 for general non-urgent matters.
Detectives Abban and Owens are working hard on these cases and can be
reached at 781-826-2335, x114 or x115 respectively. Let’s be their
eyes and ears!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Long-time “Around Town on the Web” readers will remember the good
work of Hanover resident Kerline Tofuri and the organization she
founded in 2008 called Jou Nouvo. If you are a new subscriber, I
encourage you to go back through the ATOTW archives and read up on Jou
Nouvo, a group that supports the educational efforts of women and
their children in Haiti. Kerline also played a pivotal role in the
town of Bon-Repos after Haiti’s devastating earthquake of January

Around Town on the Web subscribers have been so supportive of Kerline
and her organization to date. Let’s keep it up! I am delighted to
update you on Kerline’s latest fundraising efforts for Jou Nouvo

I would like to let friends and all supporters of Jou Nouvo around
town know about a benefit dinner that is scheduled for September 19th
in Waltham. Please see the attached flyer for details.
My hope is that people can come and enjoy the dinner; it will also be
a great opportunity to meet the JN supporters and update them on the
good work being done in Haiti and how their contributions have made a
tremendous difference. Those who cannot go to the dinner, but who
would like to support JN, can donate an item like a Dunkin Donuts
basket, wine, or a basket for family dinner/movie night, a small
painting, etc. All donated items will be available for sale at the
dinner to raise additional funds.

Thanks to three of my readers (including one from the Hanover Fire
Department!), I was directed this evening to the National Grid website
with more up to date information regarding power restoration here in
Hanover (and also in surrounding towns in their service area).

For the complete report that was accurate as of Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.,

To summarize the local impact, 2,767 of Hanover’s 5,843 customers were
without power during the height of the storm. As of this afternoon at
3:30 p.m. (a solid 48+ hours later), 1,325 Hanover customers were
still without power. According to National Grid, restoration will be
mostly completed by Friday here in Hanover with the remaining
customers restored by Sunday.

I know this is a trying time for so many of us. Reach out to your
neighbors who need a hand today!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I have two storm “aftermath” updates (for those of you with power
or smartphones) this afternoon!
First, from the DPW and the Selectman’s Office:
Residents are advised that they can deliver brush to the Ames Way
highway garage brush pile Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
In addition, the brush pile will be open for the next 4 Saturdays
(9/3, 9/10, 9/17, 9/24) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will review the
Saturday schedule for October at the end of September.

We are in the process of driving through every neighborhood and will
dispose of trees that fell into the road that we may have pushed off
to the side during storms. This process will take some time.

And this second message is from the Hanover Fire Department:

As of 6:00 a.m. this morning, there were still approximately 1700
Hanover residents without power. During a conference call with
National Grid, the Fire Department learned that National Grid’s
priorities are to restore the grid infrastructure first. What this
means is that they will be concentrating efforts to restore the main
feeder lines and critical Town infrastructures first. We have been
“lucky” in Hanover; power has been restored to the Police Station,
Fire Headquarters and the Hanover Street well field. Many of our
neighboring communities have not been as fortunate as we have been.
Many have not have power restored to their critical infrastructures.
The men and women of National Grid are working diligently to restore
power to all customers as soon as humanely possible. Please, we are
asking you to be patient during the restoration process.
The Fire Department reminds all citizens to stay safe as the
restoration and clean up continues.
ALL DOWNED LINES – POWER, CABLE, PHONE, etc. MUST BE CONSIDERED TO BE
LIVE!
Many residents are taking advantage of the nice weather to clean up
around homes and businesses. Downed trees, fences and other structures
can pose a danger if in contact with power lines. Use caution as you
remove debris and contact the Fire Department if you see any downed
wires.
