Meet author Tom MacDonald on Wednesday, September 28 at the John
Curtis Library. Tom MacDonald is a former computer analyst who has
made a significant life change towards writing and has now published
his first book, “The Charlestown Connection”. This crime novel has
drawn praise from bestselling authors, an esteemed library periodical,
and comparisons to Dennis Lehane and Robert Parker.

This program begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Free Power Yoga Class for Hanover residents

75 minute class, open to all levels

Please arrive at 9:00 to reserve a spot for your mat and to check in.
Bring a yoga mat, water bottle, and towel. Tips for those new to power
yoga: Dress in comfortable exercise wear. Top shouldn’t be too
loose, as it may rise up in “down dog”! Eat after class, rather
than before.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
There was a residential break-in reported on Monday, September 19th
during the day on Hanover Street, and another reported on Tuesday,
September 20th on Pleasant Street. In both cases gold jewelry and
electronics (TV’s, lap-tops, gaming consoles, iPods, digital
cameras) were taken, and entry was through the rear of the residence.
This brings our total number of break-ins to twelve over the past
three months. The pattern is virtually the same in each case, and it
is hard to believe the thieves have avoided detection for this long. I
can tell you that the Hanover Police are working VERY hard to try and
bring these events to an end, and right now, the HPD needs our support
and assistance more than ever. If you notice ANY suspicious activity,
please call 9-1-1 immediately.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Board of Health, in conjunction with the Hanover Visiting
Nurse Association, has scheduled their annual public flu clinics to be
held at the *Hanover Council on Aging*, 665 Center Street, Hanover
for:

Tuesday, October 4, 2011 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

Friday, October 14, 2011 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Please note:
Because of budget cuts across all departments, the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health is no longer able to provide free vaccine
to cities and towns except to those residents who are either
un-insured or under-insured (meaning their health plan will not cover
the cost of a flu shot).

The Board of Health has purchased an adequate supply of flu vaccine to
make up for the lesser amount received from the State.

*** All persons will be asked to present an insurance card (most
insurance plans welcome) and the insurance plan will cover the cost of
the flu shot ***. No one will be turned away on the basis of insurance
eligibility.

The BOH is no longer able to provide pneumonia or tetanus vaccine
because the Department of Public Health is no longer providing free
vaccine AND the because of the high cost to the Board of Health to
purchase these vaccines in advance.

Please remember to wear short sleeves.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The John Curtis Free Library will host a special program, “Go for
the Stars” on Tuesday, September 27th at 4:00 p.m. Aerospace
educator Gary Pozzato will talk and give a video presentation about
spacecraft, space travel, and life in space, robotics, and more.
Volunteers from the audience will dress in astronaut flight suits and
perform demonstrations. The program also stars “Robo, The Friendly
Robot” who moves, talks and interacts with people. Pozzato has been
involved in the aerospace industry for over twenty years and has
worked with NASA on educational projects.

Free tickets are available at the children’s room desk but are not

On October 22nd, the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library are
looking forward to an Outdoor Family Photograph Fundraiser.

Maura Longueil of Abbey Knoll Photography, well-known throughout
Hanover and the South Shore, will be on hand all day to capture the
moment in the beautiful area between the John Curtis Library and the
Stetson House. These photographs make excellent holiday gifts and can
also be used to create your holiday cards!

A 20-minute session costs $65 for the sitting fee with a complimentary
8”x10” photograph included. The Friends of the John Curtis Library
will receive $25 for each session booked. Contact Maura now at

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Join Hanover’s Open Space Committee (OSC) and walk the Fireworks
Trail on Saturday, September 24, 10:00 a.m.

Check out the newly improved Fireworks loop. This adventurous trail
allows you to traverse much of this lovely, water view filled 130
acres. Thanks to the Hanover DPW for their work to clear the last
section of the trail, thereby ensuring the ability to close this 3 – 4
mile loop!

Parking is available at the main entrance on King Street, directly
across from the new Forge Pond/King Street fields. Please bring water,
sturdy shoes and bug spray. Walkers can complete either the full loop,
or explore just a portion of the trail as an out and back walk.

Stay informed about activities and volunteer opportunities: you can
find the OSC on Facebook: Hanover Open Space, the web:

, or join their Yahoo Group: HanoverOpenSpace. In addition, the OSC
wants input from the equestrian community in town. Please let the OSC
know if you can contribute your specialized knowledge and needs to
their volunteer committee. They would also like to hear from you if
you are simply interested in more information on the work of the
committee. The Open Space Committee meets regularly on the 1st Monday
of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Hanover Town Hall.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Foundation for Educational Enrichment invites residents to
attend their first meeting for the 2011-2012 school year on Thursday,
September 22nd at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at Crescent Realty, 228
Columbia Road.

The Foundation is a volunteer, non-profit organization with a broad
mission to foster excellence and innovation in the education of young
people in the Hanover Public Schools. The Foundation’s objective is to
raise funds for educational enrichment programs that benefit all
students. Last year the Foundation appropriated $12,000 in funds for
grants submitted by teachers throughout the school system.

HFEE has a busy schedule planned for this year. They hope that you
will consider participating in some of their events. Please stay tuned
to ATOTW for more details about their work with Newcomers on the
Anchor Race, “Dine with a Cause” in October, the Middle School art
contest for the Golden Apple card in January, their spring fundraiser
with Jim Plunkett, and the Golden Apple Recognition Program at the end
of the school year.

As a new school year begins, HFEE invites and encourages you to become
involved in the Hanover Foundation. If you share their belief that a
strong educational system benefits everyone within the community and
you want to make a difference to improve the quality of education for
the children of Hanover, then join them on Thursday, September 22nd!

*The Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover* invites interested members of
the public to a free lecture and slide show on Tuesday evening,
October 4th at 7:15 p.m. at the Phoenix Lodge in Hanover’s Four
Corners.* *Christine Schadler, wildlife researcher, educator and New
Hampshire sheep farmer, will speak about the Eastern Coyote and Red
Wolf hybrid that shares our landscape, its place in our ecosystem, and
how farmers, gardeners and suburban dwellers can live together and
even benefit from the coyote. Christine has researched and lectured on
wolves and coyotes for more than 30 years and has a particular
interest in managing livestock to avoid predation. She is the New
England representative for Project Coyote, a national conservation
group that promotes coexistence with coyotes. She is currently writing
a book called /”Becoming Wolf: Eastern Coyote in New England.” /To

Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover, Massachusetts was founded in 1967
and in 1969 became a member of the National Council of Federated
Garden Clubs incorporated in St. Louis, Missouri. It is a member of
the South Shore District of the Garden Club Federation of
Massachusetts based in Wellesley Hills, MA. The club’s objectives are
to promote the advancement of gardening, concern for the environment,
encouragement of individual creativity, civic involvement through
beautification and education, and the cultivation of friendship within
the community. The club’s activities are limited to and operated
exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.
