Dear fellow Hanoverians:
A reader who missed the chance to get swabbed at the two recent bone
marrow registry drives (as described here on “ATOTW” earlier this
summer) inquired today about any further opportunities to participate.
Her e-mail reminded me that I have been meaning to send a follow-up
with that information as well as to thank all of you who already
registered!
First of all, the Metzger Family is very appreciative of the 238
individuals who registered at the two mid-summer bone marrow donor
drives here on the South Shore! I had the good fortune to assist at
the “cheek swab table” at both of the drives and was overwhelmed
with the turnout and good cheer that prevailed. Dr. Amanda Metzger was
present at the second drive for a little while and she was so grateful
to everyone who came out to support her son Nick who is in need of a
bone marrow transplant.
If anyone would still like to register to be a potential donor, it is
actually easily accomplished on-line. Go to www.marrow.org

and follow the links that say “join now”. After filling out the
registration information, you will receive a cheek swab packet and
further instructions in the mail. While I was at the donor drives, I
learned that cost to process your registration (usually around $100,
but not at all obligatory for donors) is actually covered by your
health insurance as required by Massachusetts law! There are other
states that cover it too, so if your company’s health insurance is
based somewhere else, make sure you look into it.
Heartfelt thanks again to all who have already or plan to register to
potentially save a life! Your kindness and selflessness is admirable.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Thursday August 25th, the John Curtis Library will host its annual
school bus orientation for children who will be entering kindergarten.
Children are invited to come in at 10:30 a.m. to hear some stories
about kindergarten and riding the bus. At 11:00 a.m., the school bus
will arrive and children will get on board. The driver will talk to
them about bus rules, and then they will go for a short ride to both
elementary schools and back to the library.

Parents whose children have attended this program in past years say
that it is very helpful for those who have not ridden a school bus
before and may be a bit uncertain about it. Because of space
limitations, parents do not go along for the ride. An exception can be
made if a child is particularly anxious.

Our very own Chief Jeffrey Blanchard of the Hanover Fire Department
recently sent me a number of items to help Hanover residents and
businesses prepare in case of a hurricane. Rather than bombard (and
perhaps overwhelm) you with all of the information at once, I have
decided to do a series of e-mail blasts over the next couple of weeks
to give you time to digest each of the important components. Special
thanks to the Chief for these very important public service
announcements just in time for hurricane season!

The Hanover Newcomers Club is looking for vendors for their 15th
Annual Hanover Newcomers Holiday Gift Show (formerly known as the
Craft Fair), to be held Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Hanover
Middle School. The cost for table space is $40.00, and doors open at
9:00 a.m. for set up. Further details regarding the Gift Show will
surely be forthcoming here on ATOTW as we get closer!

If you have been involved before, the club looks forward to your
return, if not, welcome aboard! The Holiday Gift Show is a fundraiser
for the club that benefits their community service efforts and

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Zip Trip is coming; the Zip Trip is coming! Fox25 will be here in
Hanover on Friday, August 19th and filming is slated to go from 6:00
a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at Briggs Field. As always, our very own Hanover
Police Department is ready to handle the anticipated crowds and
parking issues. The following information is just in from the Chief!
Parking will be available on Friday morning between 6:00 a.m. and
11:00 a.m. for residents who are attending the Zip Trip event at the
Briggs Ball Field at the following locations: Town Hall Parking Lot,
Center Elementary School, Briggs’ Stable, and the Main Street Field
entrance. This entrance will be located on the north side of the ball
field and will be marked with signage. The short portion of Center
Street between Hanover Street and Main Street (between the ball field
and the Congregational Church) will be closed and detoured. Anyone
attending the event is urged to drive directly to one of the parking
locations and walk to the event. Hanover Police Officers will be
present for traffic control.
Thanks Chief Sweeney! I will add that this is the last day of Park and
Rec in the center of town at the B. Everett Hall Playground Complex;
if you are planning to drop your child(ren) off that morning, you may
want to go down Route 53 and back up Route 139 if you are coming from
the north side of town!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
In keeping with the last ATOTW e-mail that detailed some fine examples
of Hanover community spirit, I received a great follow-up e-mail from
Hanover resident, mother of two Eagle Scouts, and Walnut Hill Garden
Club member Kathy Murray, and have paraphrased her words below.
Over the weekend, 30 volunteers re-landscaped the Fire Station on
Center Street. The project was intended as a tribute to the Fire
Department in recognition of the 10th anniversary of September 11,
2001.
Both Boy Scout Troop 1 and Troop 38 sent scouts to help. The boys
worked really hard moving gravel, manure and mulch as well as ripping
out the existing landscape, weeding and planting. Walnut Hill Garden
Club had 8 club members help with digging out all of the existing
perennials. They potted them up to be sold at their plant sale next
spring. WHGC originally planted them some 20 years ago. There were
also volunteer firefighters lending a hand.

PA Landers donated the stone and mulch. They were so generous that the
volunteers had lots of material left over, so everyone went across the
parking lot and helped finish (another one of my favorite soon-to-be
Eagle) Tyler Cheo’s (Troop 38) Eagle project with mulch. Tyler was
doing some landscaping of his own behind town hall earlier this month
for town hall employees. When that was done, there was still some
mulch left sitting in the parking lot. The volunteers completely
landscaped the town hall! Kathy could not say enough about the
camaraderie and the physical work that it entailed. What started as
one project turned into three!

She also wanted to recognize and thank the following companies that
were very generous with donations to the project:

Drive by and take a look. The group incorporated a “smoke bush” and a
“Quick Fire” hydrangea – how appropriate for a fire station! Kathy
closed her e-mail by quoting mine, “As always, together we make this
town great,” and added, “Couldn’t agree more!”

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I thought I would take advantage of the lull in summer postings to
send along the following e-mail blast. Regular readers will appreciate
this “follow-up” news from “Around Town on the Web” because
together, we make this town great!
First, a couple of weeks ago, I sent an e-mail regarding a potentially
suspect phone fundraising group called “Bay State Veterans” and
asked you to reply with your feedback or further information about the
group. I can tell you that eleven of you responded almost immediately
with your concerns about the pitch you had received from “Bay State
Veterans”. A couple of you noted the caller ID phone number as
781-656-0232. One of you was kind enough to mention the “Do Not
Call” registry which can be found here: https://www.donotcall.gov/
, even though the “Bay State Veterans” did not appear to be
concerned with following any rules! One of you had received a call
from the legitimate organization called Bay State */Vietnam/*
Veterans, but the rest of you had some of the same concerns that I
raised in my e-mail. To summarize, suffice it to say that you should
always be suspect of unsolicited phone calls asking for monetary
donations (especially when they mimic legitimate organizations), and
do not hesitate to ask for a follow-up solicitation in writing in the
mail, or check on a group via the Attorney General’s listing of
legitimate charities’ annual filing documents at
http://www.charities.ago.state.ma.us/
. Thanks to those of you who chimed in with your additional concerns!
Second, one of my favorite Boy Scouts had a great turnout at his blood
drive yesterday and I could not resist passing along this quote from
soon-to-be-Eagle Scout Mike Krall:
“I want to say thank you to everyone that came out yesterday and
made this blood drive so successful. We had 92 people show up and this
will help 231 patients. How cool is that? Thank you to everyone who
donated, took time out of their day, helped by getting the word out,
provided refreshments, and helped out yesterday it all helped to make
it a great day. A special thank you to the first time donors who
overcame their fears and donated blood. This was Mass General’s most
successful drive this summer.”
As always, together we make this town great.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The John Curtis Library will host a party on Friday, August 19th at
3:00 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the children’s summer
reading program. Jennifer Stratton, who has appeared at the library
many times in recent years, will again be providing the entertainment.
There will be music, dancing, games, and lots of interactive fun.
Snacks will be served. The party is for children of all ages. Those
who participated in the summer reading program are encouraged to bring
in their reading logs to earn a final prize. Free tickets are
available at the children’s room desk, but drop-ins are also
welcome.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I am writing with a friendly “head’s up” and to caution you to
drive carefully as you travel the north end of Route 53 in Hanover in
the near future. In addition to the on-going reconstruction of the
Route 3 overpass that has lanes detoured and divided further south
than they used to be, today I also noticed both a strike of IBEW
workers at the Verizon store and the old Garden Craft building being
torn down to make way for the new Infiniti dealership. All three
events are causing unusual slowdowns and traffic patterns.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Please be advised that the Hanover School Department will be doing a
fertilization of the following school fields: Middle School, Center
School, Cedar School and Salmond School on Saturday, August 13th.
Residents are kindly requested to stay off the fields this one day so
that the work may occur. There are no pesticides being applied and the
fields will be playable after the treatment is completed.

On an unrelated note, yes, the Open Space Committee’s Factory Pond
paddle trip was cancelled due to weather yesterday. Further details
regarding the re-scheduling of this event will be forthcoming.
