Paddle Factory Pond – Sunday August 7th, 1:00 p.m.

Join the Open Space Committee for a mid-day cruise around Factory
Pond. Access point is via Factory Pond Road off of Winter Street
(behind PA Landers property). There is space close to the pond to
load/unload your boat. All levels welcome. The Open Space Committee
will offer a 45 minute tour of the pond, pointing-out various trail
and water access points. Open Space Committee member Judy Grecco will
share her knowledge of local flora and fauna. Bring your own canoe or
kayak, PFD’s, sun-block and bug spray.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Storyteller Alicia Quintano will appear at the John Curtis Library on
Tuesday, August 9 at 4:00 p.m. Her program is titled “The Butterfly
Robe, a Tale from China, and other stories and songs”. Children and
families will travel to faraway places in this interactive concert
specially designed for library audiences. The title story is a
beautiful tale about finding peace in nature. The program will also
feature some of Alicia’s original humorous songs. For more

On Saturday, October 15, 2011, the Parents Association of South Shore
Vocational Technical High School, located at 476 Webster Street in
Hanover, will be sponsoring their 17th Annual Fall Craft Fair to raise
money for enrichment activities for the students.

The fair will run from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The cost for an
8-foot space is $50. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for set up. Students and
parent volunteers will be available to help with set up. All items
should be handcrafted and of top quality. Each crafter is asked to
donate one of their products for a raffle. For more information,

Calling all book and bargain lovers! For the entire month of August,
the Friends of the John Curtis Library are discounting EVERYTHING that
is sold in the book sale room at the library (near the children’s
room). You’ll find hard cover, paperback, fiction, and nonfiction
books categorized for easy shopping in addition to DVDs, CDs, and
puzzles – all at HALF PRICE for the month of August. Spend a few
dollars and leave with an armful of reading material. Summer is the
perfect time for reading. Stock up during August and extend the
pleasures of this season through the fall.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Easily a half dozen of you have e-mailed me over the past few months
regarding the upcoming Fox25 Morning News “Zip Trip” to Hanover on
August 19th. Now that it is getting closer, I thought I would help
spread the word about the visit and encourage you to give them your
feedback about Hanover BEFORE the trip.
Fox25 News Boston has a Town Poll that encourages you to tell them
about Hanover before they arrive and so that they can plan their
visit. Please consider going to

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Today I received an e-mail from a reader expressing concern about a
possible telephone scam that has been making the rounds here in
Hanover. I did some digging with both Mike Thorp, our town’s
Veteran’s Agent, and the Public Charities Office within the Attorney
General’s Office and have the following information to share.
First and foremost, if you receive a telephone call from ANYONE asking
for money, I suggest always asking them to send you something in
writing that supports their verbal request, and don’t offer anything
until you receive the written request. If you don’t know the
organization, ask for a return phone number and address so that you
can do your own digging before donating money. I will add that most of
the time, if I don’t know the organization, I simply say “please
take me off your call list”, and do not donate.
The specific calls that have allegedly been occurring here in Hanover
are from a group called “Bay State Veterans”. I have been unable
to substantiate any information regarding this group. There is a
similarly titled legitimate organization called “Bay State Vietnam
Veterans” that has been registered with the Attorney General’s
Office since 1999, but they do not appear to be the group that is
making the phone calls. Veteran’s Agent Mike Thorp has received
similar inquiries and complaints from residents regarding “Bay State
Veterans” solicitation calls. Mr. Thorp can be reached at

or 781-829-0968 if you have further questions about veterans’
organizations.
Diana of the Public Charities Office within the Attorney General’s
Office was also very helpful. If you ever want to substantiate a
Massachusetts charity, just call their office at (617) 727-2200,
x2101. Their website is undergoing renovations, but there is a way to
search for public charities annual filings on-line, too. For general
information, go to:

. If you have trouble finding the exact charity you are looking for,
Diana suggest searching on a word by using percentage signs as
brackets. So, to search on the word veterans, type %veterans% and all
of the registered groups in Massachusetts with the word “veteran”
will come up. You can also review charities’ records and find out what
percentage of their funds go directly to services, etc.
As the daughter of a veteran, it pains me to challenge the work of any
group who may be trying to benefit our country’s veterans. If anyone
has further information about Bay State Veterans or their related
fundraising calls, I would be more than happy to follow-up on this
e-mail.

I have known Eagle Scout Candidate Mike Krall since he was about five
years old, and although I have been pretty darn proud of him over the
years, the following notice from him ranks right up there in at least
the Top Ten Highlights. Please join me in supporting Mike (and his
even more proud parents Tom and Carol) at the following event that he
describes below:

I am holding a blood drive at St Mary’s Parish, 392 Hanover Street, on
Saturday August 13th. It will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can
donate as young as 16 with parental permission and donate on your own
if you are 17 or older. Massachusetts General Hospital is helping me
conduct this blood drive. There are T-shirts for all donors. Help save
lives and help this Eagle Project. Please contact Mike Krall (info

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I have been impaneled in a jury down in Plymouth Superior Court all
week (another story for another day!), so I apologize for the delay in
getting this information to you. Thank goodness a couple of you, my
readers, took the time to send me a quick e-mail so that I can pass
along this unfortunate news.
On Tuesday, July 19, there were four break-ins right here in Hanover.
The break-ins appear to be similar to those that happened at the
beginning of the summer on Main and Cedar Streets. They occurred
during the morning hours and at houses that appeared to have no one at
home at the time. The violations occurred on Circuit, Hanover and
Pleasant Streets this time. As before, the intruders are kicking in
back doors.
On the very same day, Tuesday, our neighboring Hanson Police
Department responded to a break-in with a similar pattern. A neighbor
next to the housebreak recalls seeing an older model blue station
wagon in the victim’s driveway, but did not get a license plate
number. Although this might not be connected to the break-ins in
Hanover, it may very well be, too.
I cannot stress enough the importance of “neighborhood
watches”…especially and even on busy streets such as these. Do you
know your neighbors’ schedules? Can you keep an eye out for each
other? Are there unusual cars (especially but not necessarily a blue
station wagon) parked on your street? Do you see people in your
neighbors’ back yard that you don’t recognize? If you notice ANY
suspicious activity, do not hesitate to call 911 and let our Hanover
PD handle it. They can’t be everywhere; so we can be their eyes and
ears! If you have some non-urgent information, the HPD business line

So many of you have had the good fortune of being a patient of my
friend Dr. Amanda Metzger at South Shore Medical Center or Crown ObGyn
that I could not resist sending this information out. I love going to
soccer or basketball games when Hanover plays Norwell and seeing the
cross-town rivalry dissolve when sitting with Amanda. She and her
husband Jon have been there for all of us; now we need to be there for

Drs. Jon and Amanda Metzger, needs a bone marrow transplant, but he
must find a matching donor. He is one of the thousands of patients
