Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Clergy Association is seeking essays from grade school
through high school students on the theme “Remembering 9/11; Building
Community”. Questions to consider in writing are: What are some
examples of things or people you have experienced or observed in
Hanover that have helped make Hanover a better community? How have the
tragic events of September 11, 2001 been able to help build a stronger
community in general?

Essays should be no longer than 3 – 5 paragraphs and should be
submitted to The Rev. Beth Wheatley Dyson, 17 Church Street in
Hanover. The deadline for submission is August 31, 2011. Winning
essays from elementary, middle and high school levels will be read at
the 9/11 ceremony to be held at 2:00 p.m. on 9/11 at Sylvester Field.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Historical Commission will hold a meeting at Town Hall in
the upstairs hearing room on Monday, July 18th at 7:00 p.m. in order
to solicit input from residents regarding Curtis School and visions
for its future use. The Commission has one year to work with the
Selectmen and residents to come up with a plan for preservation. If
you’d like to make your thoughts known, please attend the meeting and
give the Commission your ideas and thoughts. The Curtis School was
declared “preferably preserved” under the Historic Preservation By-Law
by the Commission at their hearing on June 22nd.

The Open Space Committee will host a walk from the new fields on King
Street on Saturday, July 9th at 10:00 a.m. Join us at the emerging
Forge Pond Park to walk French’s Stream trail. Parks and Rec
representatives will be joining us to explore the new fields and give
an update on their progress. Bring bug spray and explore this lovely
trail that allows you to travel between the Ellis Fields and the our
soon to be new fields on King Street. The trailhead is located inside
the new fields, located off King Street (approx #245). Park in the
main parking lot, which is the first right when you enter the fields.

I am delighted to pass along the following information from our town’s
new Fire Chief.

A Safety Message from Hanover Fire Chief Jeffrey Blanchard:
I would like to take a moment to remind all citizens that during this
holiday weekend and throughout the summer months that “fire injuries
do not take a summer vacation”.
Members of the Hanover Fire Department were reminded of this fact when
on Friday evening, we responded to an incident for a patient suffering
burns as a result of a home accident. Paramedics treated and
transported this patient via Med Flight to a Boston Hospital for
treatment. Preliminary indications are that some type of gel fuel was
involved in the incident. Further investigation is being performed by
the members of the Hanover Fire Department and the State Fire
Marshal’s office.
Remember, we all need to work together to provide a safe environment
during outdoor activities. When the calendar says summer, or any time
we enjoy activities we normally associate with being outdoors in
summer, we need to remember that the pleasure of these activities can
come to a sudden end unless we remain aware and protect ourselves
against fire and burn injuries.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of four separate house
break-ins right here in Hanover yesterday. All three house breaks
occurred between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and fortunately, no one was
home or injured. The thefts occurred on Cedar, Main, and Pleasant
Streets, and items stolen were “quick hits” like jewelry, Wii or
Xboxes, cameras, etc. One victimized family included a stalwart
Hanover High Yard Sale volunteer and long-time ATOTW reader who
despite everything kindly sent along the following information and
tips for all of us to learn from:
· Her doors were locked; they kicked in the back door of the deck and
broke the door frame; so no one is immune, but make sure your doors
are locked anyway!
· Make sure you have recorded serial numbers of things like X-boxes
and other easily portable and therefore fence-able items. Do it now
while you are thinking about it!
· Take pictures now of jewelry and other items for insurance purposes
As always, if you notice any suspicious activity, do not hesitate to
call the Hanover Police at 911. If you have non-urgent information
regarding these cases to report to Detective John Owens, he can be
reached at (781) 826-2335, ext. 115 or jowens@hanoverpolice.org

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover’s “Mission Possible” is travelling down to the Dominican
Republic on July 30th to embark on its 10th year serving the poverty
stricken Haitian refugees in La Romana. The medical/dental team this
year is being led by Hanover’s own Dr. Rick Ashburn and Dr. Mark
Donelan. Susan Setterland is the team coordinator. Other team members
include nurses, and college and high school students. Mission team
members pay their own way but are raising funds to help defray costs
of supplies, interpreters and transportation costs from mission base
to the bateys or villages where they will set up clinics.

Please consider attending the “Mission Possible” team’s only
fundraiser on July 9th!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In case you haven’t driven through the center of town during the day
this week, you may not know that the Town of Hanover Parks and
Recreation day camp has commenced! Drop off starts at 8:30 a.m. and
pick-up is at 2:30 p.m. Traffic is always tied up the first couple of
days, but it does smooth out as the summer goes along. If you are able
to take an alternate route during those times, however, it might be to
your advantage!

More important, however, is the fact that the B. Everett Hall
Playground Complex is a “closed campus” during camp hours (Monday
– Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.). The playground (including the tot
lot), tennis court, basketball courts, street hockey rink, volleyball
area, bandstand, fields, etc. are */all not available/* for use by the
general public during those times. The Parks and Recreation Department
has been charged with the safety of literally hundreds of Hanover’s
children enrolled in the Park and Rec program, and nothing is more
important!

The Parks and Recreation Committee recognizes that this will result in
some schedule juggling for townspeople for the 8 weeks that camp runs,
and appreciates the understanding of everyone involved. For more

The supply of type O negative blood at the American Red Cross has
dropped to critical levels.
Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be
transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency
situations. While all blood types are needed during the summer months,
the Red Cross urges those eligible donors with blood type O negative
to make and keep appointments to give blood this summer. They highly
encourage all type O negative blood donors who meet the eligibility
requirements to double the difference by becoming a double red cell

donor. If eligible, you can give two donations at once.

There are two opportunities to donate in Hanover this summer.
*Friday, July 15th *
98.5 – The Sports Hub at the Hanover Mall
1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

*Saturday, July 16th *
Hanover Mall – Macy’s Wing
10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Donate blood in July and receive a coupon for a free carton of ice
cream at Friendly’s.
