Ace soccer reporter Geoff Hoffman sent the following along!

I am pleased to report outstanding news coming out of Lancaster,
Massachusetts for our 2 teams that qualified for the Massachusetts
Tournament of Champions (MTOC – state soccer tournament).

The Boys Under 14 1 team – after losing a squeaker in the first game
2-3 to Charleton on Friday, the team rallied and won the next 2 games
on Saturday. They did not win their bracket, but advanced as the 3
bracket wild card to the semi-finals up in Lancaster, one of the
hardest paths to take to semi’s – the final four in the state.
Congrats to these boys for pulling it together after an opening loss.
The boys in this age group did not win a game last year – *a big
congrats for a huge turn around this year*. Then, yesterday, they
faced top seed Framingham in the BU14 semi final and could not move
past this talented team. It should be noted that Hanover advanced to
the final four while rival Scituate (who had finished ahead of Hanover
in the Coastal League playoffs) could not move out of their own
bracket. Again, this team had a great season and huge turnaround from
last year.

The Boys Under 19 Team – also had a Friday opening game loss to a
chippy Waltham team 1-2; they had out-played Waltham overall but fell
just short. They followed with a squeaker win 2-1 on Friday afternoon
to stay alive in the tournament. Saturday morning they endured a 1-1
tie and were faced with an afternoon game that would bring goal
differential into play. They won 1-0, and the other team in contention
lost 0-2, and thus qualified for the state semi-finals as one of the
top four teams in Massachusetts. They also have taken the hard route,
winning a Coastal League 1 game playoff to advance to MTOC and then
the final 4 in the state in an unconventional manner.

The final four game for the BU 19 team on Sunday was no less exciting.
The team faced Brockton in their semi-final game. What a game. These
guys move from playing 50 minute games in the preliminary rounds to 90
minute games in the semi’s and finals. The Hanover guys came ready to
play – clearly out-playing Brockton for 90 minutes – plenty of scoring
opportunities, but no finishes. Regulation time ended at 0-0 and two 5
minute overtime periods yielded no scoring – 100 minutes of soccer on
both sides – no goals – so they moved to penalty kicks. With nearly
the whole complex watching (I’d estimate close to 1000 kids and adults
watching the dramatic action), Brockton out-dueled Hanover in penalty
kicks by just 1 score after moving thru 8 penalty kick rounds. A
somewhat devastating loss, but our guys were gracious in defeat. One
thing I think stands out…the semi-final teams for BU19 were
Brockton, Waltham, Lynn, and our Hanover. We play cities at MTOC and
we compete with cities. This says something about our program.

Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, the BU 19 team won the
State BU19 MTOC Sportsmanship Award – in a tournament where a lot is
on the line and emotions run high, this group kept it together and
really has done the town proud. This is also a coach’s award, as
these guys keep our players focused – thanks to Phil Murray and Paul
Gardner for keeping our guys ready to play professionally.

The Hanover Chamber of Commerce is to be congratulated for hosting
another fine Hanover 5-K Road Race and Walk on Hanover Day this year.
I was delighted to see so many familiar faces and so many kids running
to benefit Niemann-Pick Type C disease research.

One of my readers, who also happens to be a professional photographer,
was in attendance at the race Saturday morning. She was there to take
pictures of her daughter, and also of her daughter’s Excelsior
Soccer Club teammates who were running. Her e-mail to me says it
best…

“I was taking photos for Excelsior and ended up snapping way more
then I intended – the atmosphere was inspiring. I ended up posting
the photos on my business website…I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL ANYTHING.
I am happy to forward a jpeg to anyone who wants it. I simply do not
know who many of these people are, and so I don’t know how to reach
them and thought it would be nice to share them.”

She then went on to write the following missive for all of you, her
fellow and my ATOTW readers…

“Did you know anyone who ran in the Hanover Day Road Race? If so,
and you want to see their smiling, and perhaps sweaty faces, you can
visit www.cmacstudios.com
and click on ‘Hanover Day Road Race’. The photos were taken by
Carolyn Aeschliman, a mom whose children were participating in the
race with the Excelsior Soccer Club. These were not the “official”
photos taken for the day, so you may or may not find yourself in the
images. If you see a photo of yourself that you want, simply e-mail
carolyn@cmacstudios.com
and she will happily send you an e-mail jpeg. Hanover Day was a fun
event and the race was a great way to begin the festivities.”
I love it when business people in Hanover provide a free service to
all of us simply out of the goodness of their hearts. Together we make
our town great! If anyone has results of the road race, please e-mail
me those, too!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in from volunteers extraordinaire Chris and Deb Martin!

To all Hanover yard sale customers and volunteers! Thank you, thank
you, thank you! The Hanover High School Yard Sale was a huge success
and although there is still a bit left, we sold most usable items and
the school is on its way to make way for three more fields and
parking. (Abatement and demolition will begin by July 1st).

Checks are still coming in and we more than met our goal of $10,000. A
great big thank you to the folks at HHS-YES as they donated their
municipal override ballot question fund balance of $1,400 to the
scholarships. At this writing, we are just shy of $12,000 which will
benefit scholarships for Hanover students.

If you would still like to contribute, all checks can be made out to
Callahan Inc. (our contractor), who graciously supported our sale of
items left in the building. Just drop any monetary donations off at
the Callahan trailer at the high school. Chris will also be in and out
of the building on Monday to tie up loose ends and sell some

P.S. Editor’s note: One of my favorite stories to come out of the
yard sale was the appearance of HHS teacher Jeff Faria at 7:30 a.m.
the day of the sale at the high school. Jeff drove over an hour to get
to the sale during his summer vacation to check and make sure we were
not selling some items that he was afraid that he had not tagged to be
moved over to the new building. Now that’s a dedicated teacher!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in! Hanover Youth Lacrosse is offering a summer lax program
to girls in grades 1st – 8th.

The program will be held Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
starting July 7th. It will run thru the 3rd week in August. The cost
of the program is $50.00. You may register on line at

. Hanover High Varsity Lacrosse players Casey Connors, Taylor Graf,
and Rachel Lawrence have been through our youth program and have
graciously offered to run the program under Coach Jeanne Quinlan’s
supervision. They want to give back to the program that gave them so
much. They have come up with a great program that girls from all ages
will enjoy. It will include skills, games, scrimmages and lots more.
It will be a great experience for the girls; they will learn new
skills, make new friends and have some laughs. For more information,

The following e-mail came to me after an inquiry and e-mail discussion
with Taha and Hini Kidwai of Broadway in Hanover. Instead of being
completely frustrated with the current state of school budget cuts,
the Kidwais are doing something about it! If you have a student going
to Hanover High next year please read on, or if you know someone who
does, please send them this e-mail from Taha!
As some of you might be aware, Joseph Ingle Bus Company is the
contractor Hanover Schools engages for their student transportation
needs. With the complete elimination of the bus service for high
school students for the next academic year, Steve Ingle of Ingle Bus
has provided 2 options for parents who may wish to utilize a private
bus service. Busing the students might be the preferred option for
some parents with work conflicts AND it may prove to be advantageous
in inclement weather. Come old man winter they will appreciate a bus
and you will appreciate that they will be much more secure in a bus!
It also frees parents from pick-up and drop-off duties!
If there are at least 40 students, the cost would be $45,000 for the
school year which works out to about $113 per month per student. If
there are 80 students utilizing this service, the numbers work out to
about $36,000 or $90 per month per student. The preceding numbers are
based on a 10-month school year. Obviously, the more students who take
the bus, the more potential savings will be realized. Please consider
the above as you contemplate the next school year. If you are

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in from the new Commander of Hanover’s American Legion…

Hello Town of Hanover! I recently became the Commander of the “Smoke
Free” American Legion on King Street in Hanover. There have been
many improvements at the Legion over the past couple of months
including new carpeting, a new dance floor and a new bar, thereby
making the establishment more inviting to be a member or to rent the
hall upstairs. The Legion also became “smoke free” last year prior
to the new paint job and renovations.

My goal is also to increase memberships of military members, families
of service members and sponsored members to raise money for high
school scholarships as well as to give back to the community. A few
events are happening over the next couple of months include a meat
raffle on Sunday, June 26th at 2:00 p.m., a Karaoke night on Saturday
July 23rd at 7:00 p.m., and a Hawaiian Luau on August 6th at 7:00 p.m.

rent the hall for an occasion, please contact the American Legion at

The Girl Scouts of Hanover are hosting a girl/parent registration at
their Hanover Day booth. Won’t you come by and see what Hanover’s
Girl Scouts and troops have been doing over the past year and see
what’s up for the fall? Interested girls and families new (or not) to
scouting are encouraged to attend and talk to some of our girl leaders
and parent volunteers.

In the fall, there will be another registration day in September if

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in from the soon-to-be-demolished High School!

Volunteers spent the better part of Thursday pulling together items
for the Saturday yard sale event at Hanover High School and now have
over 500 usable items from sports lockers in singles, triples, or
quads that can be used in mudrooms, kids rooms, garages etc. to usable
solid maple desks, tables, drafting tables, chairs, metal storage
cabinets, and lots more.

Due to the volume of items available to be sold, we are now changing
to a yard sale format starting at 8:30 a.m. and running until noon on
Saturday, 6/25. Please stop by and pick up some Hanover memorabilia
and help us raise money for 4 new educational scholarships. Even if
you don’t need anything, we are happy to take a donation as our goal
is $10,000 and every dollar counts.

We also need adult volunteers to help set-up and run the yard sale.
Even if you can give us one hour, on Friday (today as I write this)
from 12 noon to 7 p.m., or Saturday beginning at 7:00 a.m., all help
is appreciated.
