Dr. Raab, Principal of Hanover High School, is looking for volunteers to
serve on a committee to plan an event titled, "Say Goodbye to Hanover High".
An initial meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the
High School Library to begin planning an event for sometime in May or June.
If you are interested in serving on the committee, please e-mail Dr. Raab at
traab@hanoverschools.org or call him at 781-878-5450. Membership on the
committee is open to all residents, alumni, parents, students and teachers.
We would like to have representation from each group. Let’s get together
and plan a fitting tribute to the high school that has served us so well
over the past 53 years.

Phoenix Lodge, a Masonic Lodge, has been a part of the Hanover community
since 1874. We are involved in supporting a number of charities which
assist people locally. Our breakfast is a source of funds for the lodge to
support the various charitable activities in which we are engaged, such as
the local food banks, our Angel Fund, our Red Cross Blood Drive, South Shore
Vo-Tech Scholarships, Habitat for Humanity, Rainbow and Demoly.

Our breakfast is intended to provide a comfortable atmosphere where families
and friends can enjoy a good breakfast the is relatively inexpensive, spend
time enjoying each others’ company and not be rushed.

their latest and greatest new programs. Not a member of the Y? No worries,
there are many classes and programs you can sign up for as a non-member.

COACHING & CALESTHENICS

Are you interested in the mind-body connection, holistic health, physical
fitness, energy, meditation, and mindfulness? We’ll exercise while learning
all about health and well-being. Each week will bring forth a new topic;
handouts will be provided so there’s no need for taking notes; includes:

Thanks to Representative Nyman’s (that has a nice ring to it, don’t you
think?!) office for providing the following information:

STATE FUNDING APPROVED FOR HANOVER’S BARSTOW VILLAGE

66-unit complex to bolster housing opportunities for seniors, create
construction jobs

(State House, Boston) – As part of a $71 million state pledge to build and
preserve 1,642 housing units throughout Massachusetts, Governor Deval
Patrick, in partnership with Hanover State Representative Rhonda Nyman and
Congressman Bill Keating, announced that a total of $3.3 million has been
awarded to move forward construction plans for the proposed Barstow Village
senior housing project on Legion Drive in Hanover.

The announcement was made by the Governor on Wednesday, February 16th.

"Thanks to the work of so many people, Hanover’s Barstow Village is one step
closer to becoming a reality for our community," said Representative Nyman.
"For the past few years, members of the Hanover Housing Authority have
worked tirelessly with local partners to advance this project. The funding
approved by the state this week will surely help bolster housing
opportunities for our seniors and put our neighbors in the construction
industry back to work."

Under the announcement, EA Fish Development, the project developer hired by
the Hanover Housing Authority, will use $1 million in federal low-income
housing tax credits and an additional $2.3 million in program subsidies made
available by the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development to
construct 66 new units of affordable rental housing for residents 62 years
of age or older. 10 of the units will be reserved for extremely low-income
households.

The project is also expected to generate 72 construction jobs.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

As I am sure you have noticed, there are some neighborhood roads in Hanover
that have seen better days. The Department of Public Works recently made
available a map of the town that indicates pavement conditions of Hanover’s
roads. With the lack of funding from the state in recent years, there has
only been enough money to attend to the most severe pavement problems, and
certainly not enough to tackle big paving projects. There will be an
article on the warrant at this May’s Town Meeting that will request a
capital override to address many of the long-lagging issues in our pavement
management program.

The Department of Public Works will be meeting with the Advisory Committee
at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23rd at Town Hall to continue some
discussions surrounding this issue. Want to know which streets are on the

to share? I think this is the second time in the last 8 – 10 months that I
have received this plea from the Hanover Council on Aging (COA):

"We are looking for volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers once a week or once
every other week for one hour. We are also looking for substitute drivers.
Please contact Martha Kristian or Dawn Rivers at the Hanover COA at

Co-Teaching in Hanover

How the new co-teaching model can help all students

Ellen Witter-Harrington, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, along with
staff from the elementary, middle and high school will explain how the co$B!>(B
teaching model is being implemented in Hanover and how it can help all
students achieve success in the classroom.

What is co-teaching and what are the benefits for students?

Co-teaching, or having two teachers in the classroom, has become a popular
teaching structure in recent years and has begun to be implemented quite
extensively in Hanover. Typically in the co-teaching classroom, there is a
general education teacher and a special education teacher who share the
teaching responsibilities, with the special education teacher providing
differentiated instruction for students with special needs. In other words,
the special education teacher may be described as a strategist, taking the
standard lesson and teaching it in a different way so that all students can
access the learning requirements. For many students, this set up may be
preferred to having an aide as the special education teacher is able to help
all students and no child feels singled out. It is also quite different
from the $B!H(Bresource room$B!I(B model. Co-teaching provides an inclusive setting
for special education students while insuring that they are in the least
restrictive environment. The set up and goals of this teaching system
varies according to the age of the children being served.

What is the Hanover Parent Advisory Council?

The PAC is a parent group whose mission is to work toward understanding,
respect, support and appropriate education for all children with learning
differences in our community. The Hanover PAC will provide an opportunity
for parents to network and share information as well as a way to work
constructively with our schools to make them the best they can be for all
children.

Regular readers of "Around Town on the Web" will remember that the impact of
the fourth year of level funding on the FY ’12 school budget was announced
in early January. At least two previous detailed e-mail blasts with the
related information may be found by going to www.atotw.com, clicking on the
archives tab, and searching with a key word (such as "budget" in this case).
I am writing to give you a brief update on that process.

Although I try to refrain from personal opinion when writing ATOTW, suffice
it to say that last night’s latest installment in the budget discussions
was, uh, challenging. Scores of teachers and a handful of parents attended
last night’s School Committee meeting at the Center School Auditorium.
Presentations were made to the School Committee by members of the Health and
PE teaching team, the high school guidance department, and the high school
secretarial staff. All three areas are slated for cuts next year if the
current budget picture does not change. Several other teachers and parents
asked questions and made comments regarding the almost $1.6 million dollars
in cuts that are slated for next year.

At the end of the public portion of the meeting, the School Committee voted
to go into Executive Session in order to discuss the potential of requesting
concessions from the union. Letters had been drafted that were to be
discussed by the School Committee. Further details will be forthcoming as
they are made available to me.
