This just in from the Hanover Mall!

Hanover Mall is excited to announce its support of Red Sox Foundation and
Massachusetts General Hospital’s own Home Base Program by having its first
official "Spring Training 5K Walk" . Our "Spring Training 5K Walk" will
take place from 9:00 a.m. – noon on Wednesday, February 23rd (during
February school vacation) inside the Hanover Mall. Our goal is to raise
$10,000 dollars.

About The Foundation:
The Home Base Program offers assistance to veterans of war coping with
combat stress, will honor heroic veterans, and help raise much needed funds
for the new Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base
Program, which provides psychiatric care and community outreach to the many
veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat stress disorders
and/or traumatic brain injury and their families.

How To Join:
Participation in the "Spring Training 5K Walk" is open to all and costs just
$20 to participate. Join before 2/15/2011 and receive a special prize!

or the public
safety center located in the Sears wing for a registration form. Sign up as
a team! Teams of four registered participants will get a GRAND SLAM prize!

Where Do I Complete the 5K:
Bring your completed registration form along with a $20 participation fee
and your funds raised on Wednesday, February 23rd between 9:00 a.m. and
noon to center court of the mall. "Walk the bases" (6 times around the
inside of Hanover Mall = 6 home runs or 5K). We will have entertainment,
refreshments and many prizes given away throughout the event.

How To Donate:
Any contribution, large or small, is graciously welcome. In addition to the
registration fee, participants can solicit donations from friends and
family. Donations may also be made directly online at:

www.runtohomebase.org – choose DONATE to a VIRTUAL RUNNER – Team Hanover
Mall and make payment via credit card. Don’t forget to add your name when
you donate. The top ten fund raisers will receive Hanover Mall gift cards!

Have you started to wonder what to do with the kids over February vacation?
The good folks at John Curtis Library, thanks to financial support from the
Friends of the John Curtis Library, have some ideas for you!

Local performer Mamasteph will present a concert for families on Tuesday,
February 22 at 3:00 p.m. She sings well-known songs and her own material,
accompanying herself on guitar. Mamasteph also brings a few special
puppets, including her friend Henry. All ages are welcome.

Magician Scott Jameson will perform on Wednesday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m.
The program includes classic and brand-new magic tricks, juggling, audience
participation, and lots of surprises. The show is recommended for children
age 4 and older.

Free tickets for both programs are available at the children’s room desk.

Summer 2011 Programs

PARK AND REC

K – 6th Grades

The traditional summer Park and Rec program will return to B. Everett Hall
Field for our 50th year!! The Park and Rec program accepts children in
grades Kindergarten – 6th. Each child will be assigned a counselor and
groups will be arranged by grade with the traditional Park and Rec games,
sports, crafts, weekly entertainment, and field trips all included in the
cost. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Session 1: June 27th – July 8th (Skipping 4th of July) $135

Session 2: July 11th – July 22nd

Session 3: July 25th – August 5th

TEEN EXTREME

5th – 8th Grades

Teen Extreme is back after another great year! This summer program is
designed for Middle School students who are just leaving 5th, 6th, 7th, and
8th grades. There are nine sessions that begin June 27th and end August
24th. This field trip-based camp includes 2 camp days and 2 field trip days
(Tuesdays and Thursdays).

$120 each week

Each week is a new session that runs Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00
p.m.

Week 1: Lazer Gate and Rock Climbing (6/27 – 6/30)

Week 2: Paintball and Beach (7/5 – 7/8)

Week 3: Waterwizz and Kayaking (7/11 – 7/14)

Week 4: Canobie Lake Park and LazerGate (7/18 – 7/21)

Week 5: Kayaking and Rock Climbing (7/25 – 7/28)

Week 6: Water Country and Fanueil Hall (8/1 – 8/4)

Week 7: Six Flags and Fenway Tour (8/8 – 8/11)

KIDS KLUB

3 – 6 year olds (potty trained)

Last year we introduced our first Pre-K camp. Through the enormous success,
we created a year round day care. Kids Klub is back for another summer! This
year parents will have the option of 5 days a week or 3 days (Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday). The program runs from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Session 1: June 27th – July 8th (Skipping 4th of July) $112
(M-F) or $75 (T, Th, and F)

Session 2: July 11th – July 22nd
$125 (M-F) or $75 (T, Th, and F)

Session 3: July 25th – August 5th

We will be inside AND outside. Outside we will play games, go on nature
walks, and enjoy other outdoor activities. Inside we will have crafts (twice
a week!), board games, books, and more! Come make new friends this summer
with us!

INFORMATION FOR ALL PROGRAMS

. Registrations are accepted on a first – paid, first served basis to
Hanover residents

. On-line registration will begin at 6:00 a.m. on February 7th. Link will
be posted on www.hanoverparkandrec.com . If you do not have access to a
computer at your home, you may use the computer station at the Rec Center.

. Drop off registrations (if space is available) will start February 21st
at 9:00 a.m. at the Rec Center. (ALL paper forms, including mail in
registrations will NOT be opened until 2/21)

. Refund Policy: Full refunds will be considered until April 15th with a
$25 processing fee. Requests must be made in writing and received prior to
the April 15th deadline. After April 15th refunds will not be issued; please
consider personal vacations prior to registering your child.

I received an e-mail today from a friend of mine whose family runs a local
heating oil delivery service. After politely requesting that I write to all
of you, he ended with, "Be nice to your oilman – he’s keeping you warm!". I
thought that was just too good to not share. J

Fire hydrants, mailboxes, oil fill pipes – they all need to be accessible
for obvious reasons. In the spirit of community, I’ll take it one step
further.if you are an able-bodied Hanover resident, please take a few
minutes to check on your house-bound neighbors this week. Do they need to
be shoveled out? Can they get to their mailbox? Does their oil pipe need
to be made accessible? It’s a sheet of ice out there as I write this.what
can WE do to pull together and help each other? Who needs your help?

Psssst.pay it forward.it is simply the kind of town we are.

Please join local author John Gallagher on Tuesday evening, February 8 at
7:00 p.m. at the John Curtis Library as he discusses his book, Rum, a
Tailor’s Goose and a Soap Box: Three Murderous Affairs in the History of
Hanover, Massachusetts. John Gallagher is a retired Boston Police
Department Detective who has always had a love of history. His book covers
three different murder cases that occurred in Hanover.

There is no charge for admission to this event. Books will be available for
purchase and signing. Refreshments will be served. Please contact the

Dr. Elena Monarch of Mar Vista Psychological Associates will present a
lecture on Social Skills Development.

Understand key concepts about social skills; acquire tips to build your
teen’s self-esteem, learn how to identify a teen at risk.

Dr. Monarch has fifteen years of experience conducting neuropsychological
evaluations and providing services to individuals who have social skills
difficulties, including children and adults with social anxiety, attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), non-verbal learning disability, and
Asperger’s Disorder. Her social skills training programs are available
through individual coaching, group classes, and school or business
workshops. Her current interests include communication skills training,
school/business consultations, neuropsychological evaluations, social
developmental disorders, and stress /anxiety management.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In case you have not already heard, Hanover Schools are dismissing early
tomorrow, Tuesday, February 1st. Please consult your child’s school if you
are unsure of the early release time as they all are different due to the
bus schedules.

I have truthfully lost track of how many big snowstorms we have had this
year – and it is only January 31st! With more snow in this week’s forecast,
and with thanks to our Hanover Fire Department members who are concerned
about us, I am forwarding along some timely snow safety tips:

Dress Children for Safety:

* Dress children in many layers of clothing – clothing traps warm air
next to the body, and multiple layers increase the amount of warm air
trapped. Because most of our body heat is lost through our heads, a head
covering will not only provide warmth but also prevent heat loss. Protect
ears with a scarf or earmuffs. Mittens tend to keep hands warmer than
gloves.
* Clothing should be free of long drawstrings, especially if they have
toggles attached, as they can get stuck and cause serious injury. Shorter
scarves where the ends can be stuffed into a child’s jacket will be less
likely to get caught or tangled in winter sports equipment, such as sleds.

While at Snow Play:

* Children should be discouraged from making snow tunnels or forts
because they could collapse and cause suffocation. Snow can weigh more than
20 pounds per cubic foot! Building a fort with snow walls and using an old
sheet for a roof is a fun and safe alternative.
* To avoid injury that could result from a snowplow, children should
not play near the road on snow piles.

When Sledding:

* Look for shallow slopes in an area free of obstacles, such as trees
or fences, and away from streets, parking lots, or bodies of flowing or
frozen water.
* The surface should be packed snow (not ice), allowing better control
of the sled.
* Proper position on the sled, sitting up with feet forward, will
decrease the chance of head or abdominal injuries.
* It is recommended that children wear a multi-sport or bicycle helmet
for protection.
* Never ride in a sled that is being pulled by a motorized vehicle.
* Use the sled in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations
for the number of children to be riding on it.

When Skating:

* Shallow, flooded fields are ideal places for ice-skating and present
less of a threat than skating on bodies of frozen water.
* Always have at least one other person present. Never skate alone.
An adult should be present to provide supervision.
* Children should learn to fall on their behinds, not on their hands.

I am happy to share that the Hanover Y is jumping up and helping to address
the shortage of blood in our area. A few of my former colleagues at the Y
are on the ATOTW e-mail list, and one chimed in after my last blood drive
e-mail and added the following information for all of us:

The South Shore YMCA at Mill Pond is also having a blood drive on Tuesday,
March 1st from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Y, located at 75 Mill Street. The
bloodmobile will park outside on the tarmac and donor intake/registration
will be held in the lobby. Folks may call 1-800-REDCROSS to register prior
to this drive, or Y members who may already be in the building can sign up
on-site when the drive gets closer.

St. Mary’s is hosting its annual Texas Hold’em Tournament open to all
residents of Hanover. The funds will be used to support sending local teens
on a pilgrimage to Spain this summer for World Youth Day. The evening
promises to be a fun night out filled with lots of laughs. The details are
as follows:

This Monday, January 31, is the last day to register your child or children
for HYAA’s spring softball and/or spring baseball seasons. Spring softball
and baseball is open to children in grades K – 8 and costs $75 per person.
Please also note that if your child wishes to play either of these sports in
the summer, they must already be registered to play in the spring.

by Monday will have to pay an additional $25 late fee.
