Altrusa International Inc., of
Plymouth County is holding a "Fashion Tea" on Sunday, October 24th
at the Elms Community Center (located on American Elm Drive in Hanover) at 2:00
p.m.  Altrusans will model clothes provided by Appleseed’s of Merchant’s
Row in Hanover.  Coffee, tea and desserts will be offered during the
Fashion Show.  Tickets are available at the door for $20.00.  All of
the profits will fund community service projects in the area. 

ALTRUSA is a community service
organization of professionals committed to the betterment of their
communities.  Their focus is on literacy.  On Saturday, October 23rd,
Make A Difference Day,
members from

ten towns in Plymouth County will
donate seven (7) books each for "reluctant" readers (pre-teen and
teen-aged) to their libraries.  The books will be presented in Hanover to
the John Curtis Library by Nancy Goldthwait and Susannah Leslie.  For more

Hanover’s hockey boys and help them to raise money for their Winter
Hockey Tournament.  There will be plenty of meat (steak, hamburger,
chicken, turkeys, etc.) to be won.  We will also have a scratch ticket
raffle as well as a 50/50 raffle.  Appetizers will be served.  Bring
your family, friends and neighbors to the Harmon Club and have some food, maybe
a drink or 2, and buy lots of tickets to possibly bring home some dinner.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

One of the lovely things about “Around Town on the
Web” is the ability to immediately print corrections to recently printed
information.  Sometimes I get it wrong, sometimes it is wrong coming in,
sometimes the Mariner is incorrect.  I am relieved that only the latter
two apply today!  And I am happy to help set the record straight.

Due to incorrect information submitted to ATOTW, residents
are hereby informed that the time of the flu clinic on November 3rd
is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (not the early morning times that some
of our Boston-commuting residents were hoping for!).

Due to two errors in the Mariner, residents are also
notified that Hanover’s Amazing Race is scheduled to run on SUNDAY,
October 24th (not Saturday), and please contact hanoverdiversitycommi ttee@gmail.com
for more information (note the spelling of the word committee).

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

A book drive is currently being held at Hanover’s John
Curtis Library until October 31st by the Plymouth County District
Attorney’s Domestic Violence unit.  They are accepting gently used books
for children of all ages but are particularly looking for middle school and
young adult books.  The collection boxes are at the circulation
desks.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the purpose of
this book drive is to support the children who are also victims.

PNEUMONIA AND TETANUS VACCINES will also be administered at this time for those who need to update their immunizations.

MEDICARE B recipients’ are asked to present their Medicare card for Flu and/or Pneumonia vaccine.

COST: No charge for Hanover residents.

Children under 18 years old must have written doctors orders faxed to the Board of Health prior to the clinic date: 781-826-5289.

Donations to the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association would be appreciated.

Hanover High School is hosting a team for our continued high
school accreditation in the fall of 2012.  One of the first steps in this
process is the development of a “Core Values and Beliefs About Learning”
statement that is needed as we begin the process.  The Core Values
statement will replace the school’s current Mission Statement as part of the
process.  The high school accreditation group will have their first
meeting on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School
Library.  This time coincides with the regularly scheduled School Council
meeting.  We are seeking input from everyone; teachers, parents, students,
and members of the wider Hanover community.  Please consider attending!

The following explanation is taken from accreditation
materials:

"In order to create an effective school culture that
promotes improved learning for all students, schools must first identify a set
of core values and beliefs about learning that will function as explicit
foundational commitments to students and the community. Once the school has
established its core values, beliefs, and learning expectations it can take
steps to ensure they are actively reflected in the culture of the school and
drive curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices in every classroom. As
well, the school can use the core values, beliefs, and learning expectations to
guide the school’s policies, procedures, decisions, and resource
allocations."

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Historical Society and the Hanover Open Space
Committee (OSC) will hold an Open House at Station 5 Hanover Firefighting
Museum from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 24th.
 Tour both floors of the Museum and view our Vintage Fire Wagon and
National Fireworks display.  Judy Grecco will lead a 2 mile trail walk in
the Morrill Allen Phillips Wildlife Sanctuary, at 2:00 p.m.  The museum
property provides trailhead access to a beautiful and expansive parcel of open
space property.

Refreshments will be served.  Event is rain or
shine.  Limited parking is available at the museum located at 1095
Broadway between Cross and Water Streets.

Phoenix Lodge, a Masonic Lodge,
has been a part of the Hanover community since 1874.  We are involved in
supporting a number of charities which support people locally.  A group of Masons are starting a program called PROJECT
THREADS.  The purpose is to collect warm clothing for local families who are
struggling. Their goal is to collect as many pieces of new and slightly used
clothing to help our neighbors get through the winter months. A donation of an
article of warm clothing would be appreciated, also.
