The race is on!  As mentioned
in this space previously, this year’s race for Selectman is complicated,
so I am delighted to provide non-biased and general information on all the
candidates.  It might not answer all of your questions, but it will start
the conversation and allow you to become an educated voter.  After
soliciting all of the candidates, ATOTW has heard from its third candidate for
Selectman and I am pleased to provide the following campaign information:

R. Alan Rugman is running for
re-election to the three year term for Selectman at the May 8th Town
Election against challenger Joe Salvucci.  Al has resided in Hanover for
his entire life.  He and his wife Denise are raising their two children on
Myrtle Street.

Louis N. Avitabile is running for
the two year term for Selectman at the May 8th Town Election against
Joe O’Brien and Gary Young.  Lou has resided in Hanover for 44
years.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

If you were like me and thought you’d be going to Town
Meeting again tonight, think again.  For the first time in my memory,
Hanover’s Annual Town Meeting was held with little debate or fanfare and
concluded in one evening.  The $45 million dollar budget passed without a
single question (thanks for all of your hard work, Ad Comm) and significant
amounts of money were allocated from the Community Preservation Fund for
expenditures such as the Salmond School boiler, spec work for ADA accessibility
at Sylvester School, and the completion of the fields at King Street/Forge Pond
Park.  Earlier, at the Special Town Meeting, the town agreed to maintain
the ball fields near Center School rather than resurrect the bonfire.

Now, it is on to a much more hotly debated topic…the
Town Elections!  See you at the polls on Saturday!  Stay tuned for
some detailed information about some more of the candidates.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Foundation for
Educational Enrichment will host its final meeting of the school year on May
20, 2010 at the home of Joan McVey, 928 Hanover Street.  The Hanover Foundation
is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 to provide enrichment of the
curriculum of the Hanover Public Schools.  Last year, $15,000 was allocated to
fund such grants as the performance of Dirt at the High School, Interwrite Mobi
with Quick Screen, a Jazz clinician at the Middle and High School, TI Smart
View, Document Cameras for the Middle School, the Six Traits, Animal Habitats,
Tidepool Alive, Windmill Workshop and Discovery Education at the elementary
schools.  New members are always welcome!  Please contact foundation
co-presidents Linda DiNardo (826- 8019) or Joan McVey (878-2714) for additional
information or directions.

Hanover’s Special and Annual Town Meeting begins
Monday (tomorrow as I write this), May 3rd, 2010.  The Special Town
Meeting, which is held to finish up town-wide business from the current fiscal
year, begins at 7:30 p.m.  The Annual Town Meeting begins at 8:00 p.m.  Both
meetings are held at Hanover High School, located on Cedar Street.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Next Friday, May 7th, is the Battle of the Bands sponsored
by the First Congregational Church Senior High Fellowship.  It is one
of their many fundraisers to offset the cost of their mission trip to Maryland this
June.  This is just one of their many fundraising efforts, and it will feature
many talented young musicians from six bands who will compete for a $100
cash prize.  It is at Riley Hall, 17 Silver Street, on May 7th
from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 and will be sold at the door.
All ages are welcome.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

As the school year comes to an end, show your appreciation to your child’s teacher or any Hanover Schools staff member by presenting them with the Golden Apple Award card.  Sponsored by the Hanover Foundation for Educational Enrichment, this program was created to honor any Hanover educator, including teachers, aides, administrators, coaches or any
person who assists in the education of your child. 

For a donation of $10 to the HFEE, you will receive a Golden Apple Award card. This year’s card was made by Martha’s Vineyard pastel artist Chetta Kelley, who is an HFEE supporter and whose grandchildren attend Hanover Public Schools.

Your Golden Apple donation to the Foundation supports educational enrichment programs and will impact many students in the Hanover school system.  This year the Foundation awarded over $15,000 in grants to teachers in all grades of the Hanover Public Schools.

Golden Apple cards may be obtained by filling out the Golden Apple form soon to be sent home with your child in school notices. If  you don’t have kids in the schools, or the notice has trouble making it home (a new plague in my house full of teenagers!), you may also find the
form at the HFEE section of the Hanover Public Schools website, which is located
in the Community and Family section of the website.  Or, just cut and paste this
link:  http://www.hanoverschools.org/community/hfee/pdf/2010/Gol=
den%20Apple%200910.pdf.  Return the form to one of the Hanover schools, and the school
will send home the card with your child.  If you want to mail it in, send it to Center, Cedar or the Middle School.  Been a while since your child was in school and you can’t remember the address?  Send it to HMS, 45 Whiting Street in Hanover.  Please make checks payable to

This just in from the good folks of the Hanover Parent-Teacher
Association.an urgent update on the HPTA Prize-A-Day Calendar!

The HPTA is adding an additional day to the Prize-A-Day Calendar. There
will now be 32 drawings in the month of May instead of the original 31! On
May 3rd, the HPTA will draw an additional winner who will receive a $100
gift card to AMC Theaters. This is of course in addition to the more than
$5000.00 in cash and prizes already on the calendar!

Be sure not to miss out. There are only a few days left to purchase
tickets. It’s easy to enter; simply print the calendar which can be found
at http://www.hanoverschools.org/community/hpta/contests.htm , fill in your
name and phone number on the ticket(s), and send the tickets with a check
made payable to the HPTA to school with your child, or in the mail to the
HPTA at P.O. Box 92, Hanover, MA. But hurry, the last day to enter is this
Friday, April 30th.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover High School teacher Mark Malloy’s senior classes are participating
in a fundraiser that they hope you might consider supporting. It is called
"Run to Home Base" (http://www.runtohomebase.org/). The Home Base Program
is a new philanthropic partnership between the Red Sox Foundation and
Massachusetts General Hospital dedicated to improving the lives of New
England servicemen and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat
stress disorders and/or traumatic brain injury through clinical care,
innovative research, education, family support and community outreach.

Mr. Malloy’s students have pledged to raise $5,000 by May 23rd. They will
be selling t-shirts in the Hanover schools to raise money. Rockland
Athletics is very supportive and it is hoped that the sales of the t-shirts
will go a long way to help the students reach their goal.

The other major way the students hope to raise money is by e-mailing you!
Any amount will be greatly appreciated. They just started the other day and
have had donations ranging from $10 – $50. Every little bit helps! The war
and the reminders of war stay with many of our veterans. Our military
personnel have made incredible sacrifices to protect our freedoms.
Supporting the "Run to Home Base" program is a small way to show our
veterans our appreciation for their efforts.
