Apply for community arts grants through the Hanover Cultural Council

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Apply for community arts grants through the Hanover Cultural Council
Proposals for arts, humanities, and science programs are due October 17

Have you ever wondered what happens with the funds raised at Hanover Day?
Money from our annual celebration, plus Hanover’s share of state cultural
funds, is used to support arts, science, and humanities projects throughout
the year.

Between September 1 and October 17, 2023, the Hanover Cultural Council will
accept applications from organizations, schools, and individuals for grants
to fund cultural activities in Hanover. These grants can support a variety
of arts, science, and humanities projects, including exhibits, festivals,
field trips, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools,
workshops, and lectures.

This year’s allocation to Hanover from the Massachusetts Cultural Council
(MCC) is $8,100, and additional funds are available thanks to the past
success of Hanover Day. The Council will meet later this fall to review the
applications and award the grants.

A webinar will be held on September 12 at 6 p.m. to review the application
process. Register at

Gallery

Past events have included the Summer Concert Series by the Parks and
Recreation Department, the Drama Club programs at South Shore Vo-Tech,
funding for the Hanover Performing Arts Company, painting workshops, Museum
of Science Outreach program at Cedar Elementary School, several museum
passes and children’s programs at the John Curtis Library, and
sponsorships of programs for the Walnut Hill Garden Club, South Shore
Natural Science Center, Hanover senior center, and many others.

The Hanover Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural
Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The state
legislature provides an annual appropriation to the MCC, a state agency,
which then allocates funds to each community. Local councils are allowed to
raise additional money through events like Hanover Day.

Applications and more information about the program are available online at

Gallery

For more information, contact Chris Haraden, Hanover Cultural Council
Chair, at (781) 254-3131, or charaden@comcast.net.

Household Hazardous Waste Day

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The South Shore Recycling Cooperative will be hosting another Household
Hazardous Waste Day in Hanover at the transfer station on November 4, 2023.
They’ve made some great changes to manage the traffic flow and
pre-registration is one of them. Please go to:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=avPbEspvBxyJtWoybhV2E2bbJ0b+L+NOlYWOuaSTUz1oqLt7nDM4RqoN783ZLADJ
to register. Attached please find a flyer regarding what they will and will
not accept. For more information, please e-mail director@ssrcoop.info .

I realize that it’s pretty early to be sending this information out, but
since pre-registration is required and two other towns will be in
attendance, I wanted you all to have “first dibs”. Sign up today if you
know now that you have some household hazardous waste to get rid of this
fall! After today, this information may be found in the ATOTW archives
found here: atotw.com/archive/ , so feel free to search the archives for
the information if you decide you want to attend later on. As always, we
don’t send reminders – we clog up people’s in-boxes enough as it is!

Beach Volleyball in Hanover?

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I received the following e-mail from a delightful young resident of Hanover
whose family I have known for years, and it was just too good to not just
copy and paste in its entirety. :)

“My name is Tess Madden and I am a sophomore at Hanover High School. I play
on the volleyball team at HHS and I have a project I am working on that I
hope you can help me with. The town of Hanover is in the planning process
of redesigning the B. Everett Hall Field park in the center of town.
Currently, we have a beach volleyball court next to the playground and
basketball courts, but it has not been maintained and has been unusable for
years. Unfortunately, the redesign project does not include a new
volleyball court, but I am hoping to change that! I created a petition in
order to gauge the interest we have in town to include a beach volleyball
court in the redesign of the B. Everett Hall Field park area. Several local
towns/cities have beach courts that are used consistently by the youth and
adult population for leisure or recreational leagues. I will present the
results of the petition to the Hanover Parks and Recreation Committee for
their consideration.

Unfortunately, I don’t have long before final decisions are going to be
made about the redesign project and I know you are very good at getting the
word out around town so I was wondering if you would be willing to pass the
petition along? No donations are needed, I am just looking for support.

Here is the link to the petition:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=qQZwZ00cjjiDr42iLfxN/CBpoTLQnp7sk3Nv1rz+Vr5oqLt7nDNoRqoN783ZLADJ

Thank you for considering,
Tess Madden”

If you have questions or need more information, Tess may be reached at

Hanover Community Donation Drive

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Unity and a High School senior are partnering up to host a Hanover
Community Donation Drive.

This will be a drive up and drop off event this Sunday, August 13th from
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Sylvester School parking lot, located at 495
Hanover Street.

The group will be collecting new school supplies, new or like new used
books and non-perishable food items. There has been an increase in need for
all of these supplies.
You may donate to one or all 3 organizations they will be collecting for.
You can just drop off and they will take care of getting the supplies to
the right organization.

Those organizations are:

Schools on Wheels: collects new school supplies and books for grades 5-12.
This organization fills backpacks with school supplies and delivers them to
homeless shelters in the area to make sure all students are ready to go
back to school. (Attached is the items needed list.)

Prison Book Program: Collects new and like new paperback books of all
genres to send to prisoners. (Attached is a list of most needed book
genres.)

Hanover Food Pantry: The pantry has had an increase in need and has some
bare shelves. Let’s help them stock up. All non-perishable food items are
welcome (see the list of most needed items attached). Also, some of the
school supplies will be donated here for those in Hanover in need.

If you can’t make the above drop off day/time, you may instead email
darcieledwards@gmail.com to get an alternate drop off address. Drop offs
are available any day/time until 8/14 for books and 8/17 for school
supplies.
You may also drop off items for the Hanover Food Pantry at the Sylvester
School building. In the back of Sylvester School there is a shed that is
open for drop off at all times.

If you know of a family in need of school supplies, they may also reach out
to Darcie directly at darcieledwards@gmail.com to request the receipt of
donated school supplies. All information will be kept confidential.
