Grand Opening May 13th: New Hanover Trail and Observation Platform

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Join the Hanover Open Space Committee, Wildlands Trust, and the North and
South Rivers Watershed Association for a walk in Hanover on Saturday, May
13 at 9:00 a.m. as they officially unveil the new Mattakeeset Trail and
“Chapman’s Landing Overlook”. The completion of the Mattakeeset Trail
represents the final “piece of the puzzle” in the Indian Head River Trail
system, a network of over six miles of interconnected trails along the
Indian Head and North Rivers. This shared project was completed by the
Indian Head River Trail Coalition: the towns of Hanover, Pembroke, Hanson,
the North and South River Watershed Association, and Wildlands Trust.

The group will meet in the parking lot on the Hanover side of Luddam’s Ford
at 8:45 a.m. and walk the new Mattakeeset trail which crosses land that is
owned by Plymouth County and runs along the north side of the Indian Head
River. From there you’ll head off around the Chapman’s Landing/Iron Mine
loop and stop to see the new “Chapman’s Landing Overlook”. This post and
beam North River viewing platform was constructed by volunteers under the
guidance of the Hanover Open Space Committee.

The hike should be completed in under 2 hours and will be approximately 2.2
miles in length over relatively flat trails. This area can be muddy, so
please wear appropriate footwear. For more information, contact
Hanovertrailwalkers@gmail.com .

Town Meeting finishes in one night!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Despite my very public predictions to the contrary, Hanover’s Special and
Annual Town Meetings finished in one night this evening. Among other
highlights, we voted to add $650,000 to this fiscal year’s school
department budget, we banned digital signs going forward, and the decision
to light up Forge Pond Park passed without a peep. We were even done with
the $70 million-dollar general budget article before 8:30 p.m. Shout out
to the Advisory Committee, School Committee and Department, Finance
Director and the Town Manager on their hard work on that latter article, in
particular!

Historians in town surely will applaud the decision to get James Ludden’s
name right and to preserve our historic weights and measures set. We
updated several sections of the zoning by-law and purchased public safety
and public works vehicles. And I bet all of us will look forward to the
municipal aggregation study that may just save us money on our electric
bills if all goes according to plan.

We now move on to the Annual Town Election, which will be held on Saturday,
May 13, from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School. See you there!

Town Meeting starts Monday!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover’s Special and Annual Town Meetings start this Monday! Mark your
calendars – the Special Town Meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. and the Annual
Town Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m., both at Hanover High School, 287 Cedar
Street. The 2 “warrants”, similar to an agenda, may be found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=GTaMKXDpUxSuarTSeaQuSCOdeqfOReAbt/PmjSdovmBoqLt7nDNoRqoN783ZLADJ
. On the list – how do we feel about the digital signs in town? The
School Department has had huge cost overruns this year and needs $650,000
just to close the books on Fiscal Year ’23. Will we approve that along
with a large increase for FY ’24? Do we want lighting at Forge Pond Park?
How about dedicated funding for Hanover Day expenses? All this and
more…beginning Monday night!

Residents are encouraged to come early and see the display in the cafeteria
about the landscape design work that is being done at B. Everett Hall
Field. Park in the front parking lot; the back doors will be locked and
check in will flow from the front doors only. Please thank your dedicated
team from the Police and Fire Departments, CERT team, Elections, School
Department, HCTV and the DPW for their hard work behind the scenes as you
come in, too. And most importantly, please thank the volunteer board and
committee members who spend months and months preparing the budgets and
warrant articles for this day. Which, by the way, I fully expect to extend
into Tuesday night. So, plan your childcare arrangements now!

See you there!
