A Parent’s Look at Testing & Evaluations: Your Role & Responsibilities

Tuesday, March 9th (Snow date – March 16th)

7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Hanover Middle School (Library), Whiting Street

Elaine Rabbit will present an overview of educational testing and the
evaluation process. This presentation will focus on a parent’s role as it
applies to evaluations and assessments for their child.

Topics will include: How do you request testing? How do you participate in
a school district’s evaluation process? Also, what are some questions to
ask an evaluator, tips on looking at evaluation reports, and how to research
additional information. The presentation will conclude with a question and
answer session; participants are welcome to bring their questions.

Presented by: Elaine Rabbitt, Parent Support Specialist, EMR Parent Support
Services. Elaine currently advocates for her own son and mentors and
supports families in their journey of advocating for their children. She has
received training through the Federation of Children with Special Needs and
Wrightslaw.

What is the Hanover Parent Advisory Council?

The PAC is a parent group whose mission is to work toward understanding,
respect, support and appropriate education for all children with learning
differences in our community. The Hanover PAC will provide an opportunity
for parents to network and share information as well as a way to work
constructively with our schools to make them the best they can be for all
children.

The City Solicitors and Town Counsel Association has filed a brief on behalf
of the Town of Hanover and Callahan, Inc. in the matter regarding the high
school construction case. To read the brief, please go to

And while I have you, just a reminder that the case will be heard in the
Supreme Judicial Court for the Commonwealth this Monday, March 1, at 9:00

I have been so delighted to hear of the outpouring of support for Hanover
resident and cancer fighter Julie Porzio, mother of (my "bad", she’s now) 9
year old Cammie and wife of Mark. Donations of everything from meals to
auction items have been sent as a result of the previous ATOTW e-mail. (For
those who missed it, go to www.atotw.com and click on the archives tab.)

The good news: "Friends of Julie", scheduled to be held Saturday, March 27th
at 7:00 p.m. at the Harmon Club in Rockland is almost sold out! If you
intend to attend, please send your check for $50 per person to "Friends of
Julie", P.O. Box 10, Hanover, as soon as possible. Please indicate your
interest in attending the event on the 27th along with your check. You’ll
be entered in a drawing for a 7 day cruise to Bermuda when you do!

Even better news: If you want to support "Friends of Julie" and are either
unable to attend or would like to simply be supportive from a distance,
there are plenty of tickets left for the $10,000 Grand Prize raffle. Please
send a $100 check to "Friends of Julie" to P.O. Box 10 in Hanover to be
entered into the drawing. For more information about the raffle and the

note that your check is designated for the raffle (rather than the event).

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

One of the things I love about this town is how we routinely step up to the
plate when our neighbors are in need. I am humbled to be the bearer of such
news, and hope to balance the need to respect someone’s privacy along with
the desire to gain support for anybody who needs it. Hence, the following
e-mail.

In 2006, 30-something year old Hanover resident Julie Porzio was diagnosed
with breast cancer. That news alone was devastating. She went through
treatment, and was declared cancer-free within the year. Then, in 2008,
Julie received the unfortunate awful news that not only was her cancer back,
but it had metastasized to her liver.

Julie is the proud mom of 8 year old Cammie and dear wife of Mark. Cammie
plays softball for HYAA.a program near and dear to my heart. Julie and Mark
became ATOTW readers in September of 2008. They were HHS-Yes supporters.
They are our neighbors. I am pleased to tell you that some of Mark and
Julie’s friends have gathered their resources and are putting together a
fundraiser in honor of Julie next month. Further details will surely
follow.

For now, mark your calendars for an event called "Friends of Julie" on
Saturday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Harmon Club in Rockland. Your
entry ticket donation of $50 per person will automatically enter you in to a
raffle for a 7 day cruise to Bermuda. Details regarding how to purchase
tickets for the event will be forthcoming; for now, save the date. If you
cannot make the event, but still want to support "Friends of Julie", you can
instead purchase a $100 raffle ticket to be entered in a different drawing
that has a Grand Prize of $10,000. Details regarding how to purchase the
raffle tickets may be found at www.friendsofjulie.org . There will be
additional auction items; those interested in donating an item can contacted
one of the organizers (listed in the aforementioned website).

The author of Poplar River, Judith Barban, will be hosting a book signing
and discussion for Hanover residents on Saturday, March 27th from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. at the John Curtis Free Library. Please contact the library at

additional details.

Poplar River is a romantic wilderness adventure novel set at a remote
fishing outpost in northern Manitoba, Canada, where Karen Kinsley and her
husband Steve Marsten spend an unusual honeymoon. While learning the art of
fishing, Karen responds deeply to the beauty of pristine nature. Returning
year after year to the same outpost on Poplar River, her love of the natural
world and knowledge of fishing grow. She develops a mystical attachment to
certain animals of the wild-and that attraction is mutual! Some of the
adventures in the wilderness are spine-chilling, others amusing. Readers
will gasp, laugh, and cry as they live through ten years of Karen’s triumphs
and tragedies.

Judith Barban is a native of Atlanta, GA. She garnered numerous scholastic
awards and honors as professor of French, first in Atlanta at Kennesaw State
University, then in Rock Hill, SC, at Winthrop University. After
retirement, Judith’s first novel, Poplar River, won the top prize from the
Southeastern Writers Association in 2009, and has received glowing reviews.
Judith is a classical pianist and lives in Tega Cay, SC. She and her
husband spend a part of every summer fishing in the Canadian wilderness.

In addition to meeting with the Advisory Committee this Wednesday at 7:15
p.m. at Town Hall, the School Committee will be making their yearly budget
presentation to the public on Wednesday, March 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the
Center School Auditorium.

Please be advised that this Wednesday’s meeting with the Advisory Committee
is just that.a public meeting but between committees. You will be able to
hear the School Committee’s presentation and certainly learn a lot about
their intentions, but as a former member of the Advisory Committee, I am
sure that the AdComm will have a full docket and lots of other business to
discuss that evening. The public forum for comment on the School’s budget
will be on the 10th.

The Hanover Cultural Council is in the planning stages for Hanover Day 2010.
They are hoping to hold the event on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 10:00 a.m.
– 4:00 p.m. In preparation, there will be a meeting for individuals, groups

March 6th, at 10:15 a.m. in the large meeting room at the John Curtis
Library.
