The Hanover Parent’s Music Club has been busy! In an effort to raise money
for the music programs at every grade level, they are delighted to announce
their upcoming raffle calendar. One prize will be drawn every day in

The mission of the Hanover Parents Music Club (HPMC) is to foster
educational awareness of the music programs among the schools, parents, and
the community, and to advocate for excellence in music education on behalf
of the children of the Hanover Schools. They invite and encourage the
Hanover community to join us in our goal to lend both active and financial
support for the benefit of all music students.

Support their programs and the children of Hanover by purchasing a chance to
win one of the many raffle items listed on our calendar. They pick a winner
each day!

The calendar raffle will kick-off with our 1st drawing at "H-Town Goes
Motown" on Friday, January 29, 2009, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. Cushing Center, 673
Main Street, Norwell. It is an evening of entertainment provided by the
students of the Hanover Public Schools. You do not need to be in attendance
to win, however the evening will be fantastic and feature great
entertainment, light refreshments, and raffles. The proceeds from the
calendar raffle and this evening of entertainment will support the K – 12
music program in the Hanover Public Schools.

Sensory Integration Difficulties and the Impact on Behavior and
Participation

Information for Parents and Staff to help recognize and cope with sensory
processing disorder

Tuesday, February 2nd (Snow Date – Feb. 9th)

7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Meeting Location: Hanover Middle School (Library), Whiting Street

Description: This overview will help teachers and parents better understand
their child’s unique response to the sensory inputs from the world around
them. Some children are more sensitive to daily events in life such as
sounds they hear, the textures and smells of foods, or the feeling of having
their face washed. These sensitivities can impact the child’s ability to
successfully participate in daily life tasks and can have a strong impact on
school and family life. Strategies for helping a child become more
successful in participating in sensory events will be discussed within this
interactive session.

Presented by: Stacey E. Szklut MS, OTR/L. Stacey is the owner of South
Shore Therapies, a clinic specializing in intervention for individuals with
sensory, motor and feeding difficulties. She is nationally recognized for
her knowledge of sensory integration and has developed and presented a wide
variety of workshops on assessment, intervention, and combining therapeutic
techniques. Stacey’s extensive clinical and teaching experience provides the
foundation for her belief in an eclectic approach to intervention, focusing
on developing functional abilities for independence. She incorporates these
ideas into her teaching style which highlights active learning and
developing a wide range of practical and useable suggestions for
intervention.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Progress has been made in the court case involving N.B. Kenney Company, Inc.
and the 10 Hanover taxpayers vs. the Town of Hanover and Callahan, Inc.
regarding the construction of the new high school. Below please find a
direct excerpt from Chris Martin, Chair of the School Building Committee:

NB Kenney (the HVAC contractor) has withdrawn from the lawsuit against
Hanover and Callahan. The case is now only brought by the 10 residents.

The Supreme Judicial Court will hear the case the first week of March in the
John Adams Courthouse at One Pemberton Square in Boston.

Please pass this information on to residents interested in the process. If
Hanover loses this appeal, the School Building Committee will most likely
stop the work and re-bid the entire job. This will cause a minimum 6 month
delay in the project and cost the town of Hanover substantially more.

On another note, Callahan is finishing the foundation work next week,
plumbing for the building is underway and the first steel will go up in the
beginning of February. The project is currently running on time for a
September, 2011 opening. This would allow the current 10 grade class to
graduate from the new building. Project photos can be seen at

webcam shortly that will be linked to this site where you will be able check
out progress from the comfort of your own computer.

The Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award Committee is accepting
nominations for the recipient of the 9th Annual Spirit of Hanover Community
Service Award.

This Award is presented annually to an individual who best exemplifies the
spirit of Hanover by voluntarily giving selflessly of their time, energy and
talent to the Town and its citizens thus enriching our lives, fostering a
true sense of community and inspiring us all to a higher level of service.

Nominations should be in writing and should articulate in detail how the
nominee satisfies these criteria.

Nominations must be postmarked no later than February 19, 2010 and should be

28. The Friends of the John Curtis Free Library extend our sincere thanks

Altrusa International, Inc. of Plymouth County will sponsor antique
appraisals on Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Phoenix Lodge in
Hanover (corner of Washington and Broadway).

The South Shore’s Joan Caddigan, Auctioneer and Antique Appraiser brings her
35 years of expertise to Altrusa International’s Antique Appraisal Day. Ms.
Caddigan will discuss the state of the antique market and downsizing. She
is a member of the South Shore Dealers Association, National Auctioneers
Association and Past President of the Massachusetts Auctioneers Association
and Hanover Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Caddigan will be joined by noted
Appraiser and Antique Dealer, Henry T. Callan, from East Sandwich. Mr.
Callan has been buying and selling antiques since 1969 and is a member of
the New England Appraiser’s Association. He has a Master’s degree in
history and teaches a course on antiques. Mr. Callan will discuss Chinese
Porcelain and embroidery samplers. Paul Mueller-Reed, a well known book
appraiser from Sunderland, MA. will also be on hand to appraise antique
books. In business for 18 years, Mr. Muller-Reed is an expert on rare and
scholarly books.

All kinds of antiques will be appraised with the exception of stamps, coins
and jewelry. Appraisal for each item will be $5 (limit three items).
General Admission is $5 for those without appraisal items. All proceeds
will benefit the local charities of the Altrusa International of Plymouth
County including parties for Veterans at Brockton Hospital Facility,
providing yarn to seniors in the community to knit scarves, hats and mittens
that are then donated to children and families in need, donations to local
food pantries, support for the Rehoboth Homeless Shelter, and scholarships
to Massasoit College.

As the legal proceedings continue regarding the Hanover High School project,
I thought I would take a moment to call your attention to a page of the
School Building Committee’s section of the Hanover Schools website. The
list of legal documents may be found here:

One document that I have not featured yet here on ATOTW is the Appeals Court
decision by Judge Mills on December 22nd that overturned the injunction
invoked by Judge Chin. It may be found here:

-09.pdf . Of particular note is the emphasis the judge put on the
injunction’s burden to the town that begins at the bottom of page 6 and
continues on page 7.

While the concrete is being poured daily at the new building site, the legal
proceedings will continue. I will endeavor to keep you up-to-date, but I
also encourage you to consult the School Building Committee’s section of the
Hanover Schools website if you are looking for further information.

Community Recreation Programs at Cardinal Cushing Centers begin on January
18th. Call the Cardinal Cushing Recreation Department at (781) 829-1295 or

After-school and Saturday programs include arts and crafts, sports and
fitness, cooking, bowling, Special Olympics Basketball (3 levels), Special
Olympics Nordic Skiing, Special Olympics Young (under 8) Athletes Program,
Cheerleading and Pep Squad, SibShops Support Group, Zumba Aerobics, Yoga,
Rhythmic Arts, and Social Skills Hour.

Programs are designed for students with cognitive challenges looking to
build friendships, increase their independence, and improve their athletic
and social skills. February and April vacation recreation programs are also
available. Supportive, energetic, professional instructors provide
encouragement to children and young adults from age 6 to 22. Quality
facilities at Cardinal Cushing School include a state-of-the-art gymnasium,
full-service kitchens, exercise rooms and equipment, and costs are
reasonable. Some programs involve off-campus settings in the community.
Join the fun, get active, make new friends, and learn new skills!
