Reception for 2023 Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award recipient Mary Anne Cirino

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award Committee is pleased to
announce that the 2023 Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award recipient
Mary Anne Cirino will be honored at a reception to be held on Sunday, April
30, 2023. The community is invited to attend.

Please join the Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award Committee, Mary
Anne, and her family and friends for this reception in Mary Anne’s honor
at the Hanover Senior Center, located at 665 Center Street in Hanover from
1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30th, 2023. A light luncheon will
be served.

Born and raised on the North Shore, Mary Anne went to Massachusetts General
Hospital School of Nursing and was the president of her class when she
graduated with her R.N. in 1964. She married Bob in 1965 and they began
raising their daughters Julie, Kristine and Susanne in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania while Bob was in the Navy. Ever flexible, Mary Anne worked in
the OR, on a Med. Surg. floor, and in an ICU during that time.

Mary Anne and Bob built their house in Hanover in 1975 after Bob was
stationed at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Early on, Mary Anne was
a Girl Scout leader in Hanover for ten years. Mary Anne simultaneously
initially worked in pediatrics at the South Shore Medical Center for nine
years and was a part of the initial success of that growing practice that
was founded by local Hanover and Norwell doctors. She became active in the
Hanover Woman’s Club Jrs. in the early 1980’s and went on to become
their President in 1990. Thanks to her leadership, and the support of so
many others, the Woman’s Club and the Hanover five churches founded the
Hanover Food Pantry during her tenure as President. In the meantime, in
1987, Mary Anne took a job in a then relatively new field with Commonwealth
Hematology and Oncology and remained an oncology nurse for the rest of her
career until her retirement in 2016. Mary Anne remains active in the
Woman’s Club, Jrs. as she has been for the past 4 decades, and with the
Hanover Food Pantry for the past 3 decades. She joined the Walnut Hill
Garden Club in 2011 and wishes that she joined earlier! Additionally, Mary
Anne serves the Alumni Association of the Massachusetts General Hospital
School of Nursing as her Class Agent.

The Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award is presented to an individual
who best exemplifies the spirit of Hanover by voluntarily giving selflessly
of their time, energy and talent to the Town and its citizens thus
enriching our lives, fostering a true sense of community and inspiring us
all to a higher level of service.

Past recipients of the Award include Mrs. Virginia Szejnar, Mrs. Barbara
Barker (-Kemp), Mr. Richard “Dick” Eaton, Mrs. Jean Migre, Mrs. Lois
Van Doren, Mr. John Thomson, Mrs. Barbara Itz, Ms. Catherine
Harder-Bernier, Mrs. Joanne B. Cure, Mr. Harold (Hal) D. Thomas, Mr. Roger
A. Leslie, Sr., Mrs. Judy Grecco, Mr. James Gallant, Mr. Ray Miller, and
Mr. Les Molyneaux.

Receipt of the Award is commemorated by this reception and by having the
recipient’s name inscribed on a perpetual plaque which is prominently
displayed in the foyer of the Town Hall. Please join the community of
Hanover at the reception on Sunday, April 30th, 2023.

Reception tickets are available for $15 per person from Sally Boutin,
Yvonne Bright, Kathy DiSabato, Patricia Sears, Arlene Traylor, Dave
DeCoste, Judy Grecco, Tim Kane, Rhonda Nyman or Cathy Harder-Bernier. They
are also available electronically by going to Eventbrite at

Last Day to Register to Vote at Town Meeting and in the Annual Town Election

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier announced that Friday, April
21st is the last day to register to vote in the May 1st Annual Town Meeting
and/or in the May 13th Annual Town Election. The Hanover Town
Clerk’s/Registrar’s Office will be open until 5:00 p.m. on April 21st,
and on-line registration will be available until 11:59 p.m. that night.
Please come to the Town Clerk’s/Registrar’s side entrance lower-level
door if you need to register in person. Read on for on-line registration
information!

Any Hanover citizen who will be eighteen on or before the first day of Town
Meeting (May 1st) or by the Town Election (May 13th) is encouraged to
register to vote. Once registered, individuals will be eligible to vote in
all elections thereafter. Further, residents may “pre-register” to
vote if they are age 16 or 17, but they will not be eligible to vote until
they turn 18.

Citizens of Hanover may conveniently register to vote or change their party
status on-line, by mail or in person. The link for on-line registration is
here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=wFgrEJqiCAWSCXFMUwbdf8yi5xHVlYd+mf31gfnjPWZoqLt7nDOYRqoN783ZLADJ
. If residents choose to register by mail they should download the
“Massachusetts Mail-In Voter Registration Form” found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=9UdczQVgsnCwmXZ0sUfJ/syi5xHVlWd+mf31gfnjPWZoqLt7nDOYRqoN783ZLADJ
and mail the completed form to the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office.
If voters wish to register to vote in person, they may do so at two
convenient locations: Hanover Town Hall or the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

“With automatic registration now the law of the land in Massachusetts,
very few people actually need to come in to register to vote”, said
Harder-Bernier. “However, what we do occasionally see is that people who
have moved recently and/or who have not updated their driver’s license –
those people do need to update their voter registration status. We also
sometimes see 18-year-olds who do not yet have driver’s licenses who need
to register to vote. We look forward to helping those folks!”, said
Harder-Bernier.

Questions may be directed to Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
(781) 826-5000 x1079 or by e-mail at Catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov
, or Carol Mattes at (781) 826-5000 x1082 or carol.mattes@hanover-ma.gov .

Restoring the health of the Indian Head River – clarification

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It has come to my attention that information that was submitted to Around
Town on the Web and e-blasted last week was at the very least misleading,
if not outright incorrect. Please note that that the upcoming presentation
re-printed below is NOT being co-sponsored by the Town of Hanover. Since
the information was submitted to ATOTW by the North and South Rivers
Watershed Association, I am re-running it and removing any previous
reference to area towns. Thanks to the folks that sent me the first press
release, and thanks to the folks who expressed their concerns about that
press release. I know we are all just trying to help!

The North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA) invites residents
and others interested to learn more about the potential for reconnecting
and restoring the health of the Indian Head River (IHR). This information
session will be held via Zoom.

When: Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.
What: Last spring, the NSRWA received a grant to determine the feasibility
of removing the State Street Cross Street Dam (a.k.a. Indian Head Dam) and
Luddam’s Ford Dam (a.k.a. Elm Street Dam a.k.a. Curtis Crossing Dam) in
order to restore fish habitat on the Indian Head River.

There will be a short presentation on the project background and status,
and representatives from the following boards and organizations will be
available to answer your questions:
– NSRWA
– IHR Restoration Steering Committee
– Project consultants
– MA DEP’s Natural Resource Damages Program
– MA Division of Ecological Restoration
– MA Division of Fisheries & Wildlife

REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Please register using the link below. After
registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information on how
to join the webinar on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Spring Walking Tours with Jack!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Historical Society presents Spring Walking Tours with Jack!

Luddam’s Ford, Saturday, April 1st at 10:00 a.m.
and
Four Corners, Saturday, April 15th at 10:00 a.m.

Join the Hanover Historical Society’s intern Jack McLaughlin, a Hanover
resident and senior majoring in History at Bridgewater State College, for
two one-hour walking tours of Luddam’s Ford and Hanover Four Corners this
Spring! Join Jack to explore two of the most historic areas in Hanover. The
tours will take place on the two Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m.,
regardless of weather, unless it is extreme.

Luddam’s Ford: A Natural and Industrial History Tour, Saturday, April
1st, 10:00 a.m.
Explore the natural and industrial history of Luddam’s Ford, where
Hanover’s Elm Street meets Pembroke’s West Elm Street on the bridge
over the North River. This tour will cover the site from its earliest use
by Native Americans, to its namesake event when James Ludden (notice the
spelling) carried Governor John Winthrop across the river on his shoulders,
to the more than three centuries of irons forges and rubber manufacturing
at the site.
The tour will start at the Hanover side parking lot, cross the historic
1894 bridge to the Pembroke side, and return to finish back on the Hanover
side. The tour will last about one hour, wear comfortable shoes, and will
take place unless the weather is extreme.

Four Corners: The Revolution and Early Republic Years, Saturday, April
15th, 10:00 a.m.
Hanover’s Four Corners neighborhood was the town’s bustling business
hub during the years of the American Revolution and the decades of the
Early Republic when shipbuilding was at its height. This tour will explore
the several buildings still standing from that time, to tell the stories
and events associated with those years, the tavern keepers, merchants,
farmers, shipwrights, and their families, who lived through the earliest
years of the country.
The tour will begin in front of St. Andrew’s Church, loop through the
neighborhood, and last about one hour. Wear comfortable shoes and be
prepared for any weather, it will go off unless the weather is extreme.
