Dear fellow Hanoverians:
 

“Around Town on the Web” happenings have been few and far between lately as we all got into the holiday spirit and/or revved up for last night’s New Year’s Eve festivities.  I thought I’d take a moment therefore to thank you for your enduring support, words of thanks, and devoted readership.  It’s still amazing to me how this little endeavor to support the first request of a rejuvenated School Building Committee in 2004 has turned into a town-wide service to so many people and for so many reasons.  I am further grateful for the expertise and assistance of Hanover resident Mike Van Lare – who literally came out of the woodwork this year and made it possible for me to send one e-mail to 800 Hanover computers per hour.  Gone are the days of dodging Comcast’s anti-spamming measures and not being able to meet the sometimes breakneck speed of e-mail requests.  Yippee and thank goodness!

 A couple of reminders for folks who wish for me to send out information “ATOTW”:

·         Please write your information in a press-release format if possible – include who, what, where, how, when, and why, and send it so that I can simply cut and paste and send it along!

·         Please only send Word documents or information embedded in an e-mail.  Text in .pdf format does not cut and paste well. 

·         I reserve the right to edit anything I send out, and also the right to refuse to send something out entirely.

·         Your information will usually go out within a day or two of my receipt.  Please plan your advertising campaigns accordingly.

·         I don’t send reminders.  I clog up people’s in-boxes enough as it is!  I will however send out revised information or cancellation notices if my time permits.

 And for those new to “ATOTW”, please know that I am a volunteer who is simply joyfully providing a service to my community.  I promote non-profit Hanover events, and events sponsored by Hanover non-profit organizations.  I occasionally send out info regarding for-profit organizations who are providing a free community service to Hanover residents.  I have sent out information that is in support of the Hanover business community, but do ask that for-profits use traditional paid-for advertising.  I also serve individual Hanover residents in need, and mention significant Hanover happenings and milestones.  If something I send is not of interest to you, just hit delete!  J  I make connections, provide a resource, and bring people together.  I shout good news from the rooftops!  I hope that I encourage you to get involved, stay involved, and help to make Hanover the tremendous, affectionate, and united small town that it already is and will certainly continue to be with your devoted participation.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Cub Scouts Pack 39 would like to remind all Hanover residents about their annual Christmas Tree Pick-Up and Recycling Service. The scouts will take away your discarded Christmas tree on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 for the requested donation of $10 per tree.

Residents may contact the scouts for tree pick-up via e-mail or phone up until January 5th.  Phone them at 781-826-7555 from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. or e-mail them at xmastree_pickup@yahoo.com . Tell them your name, address and phone number.  Trees should be curbside by 9:00 a.m. on January 10th.  Please place a check (payable to Pack 39) in a plastic bag and attach it to the tree.

This event is Pack 39’s annual fundraiser and it integrates community service and environmental awareness. There are several area businesses that donate their trucks and drivers to assist them in collecting the trees, and the DPW allows the Scouts the use of their space for recycling.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The First Congregational Church of Hanover, UCC will hold a variety of services on Christmas Eve.   At 6:30 p.m. on the 24th, they will offer a family service that is complete with music and energy for all ages.   At 9 p.m. that same night, they will offer a more traditional service with carol singing, communion and candlelight.   Their outdoor labyrinth will be lit with torches, a Yule log and luminaries from 6 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.  Whatever your Christmas Eve plans, you can walk the labyrinth with the sounds of Christmas music and a cup of hot cocoa.  The church is located at 515 Hanover Street.  The labyrinth is next door at 21 Silver Street.  For more information, call the church office at 781-826-4762.

I thought I’d add “weather reporter” to my list of uses for “Around Town on the Web”!  In case you have not heard, Hanover Schools will be on an early release schedule tomorrow due to the impending snowstorm.  Be careful driving home, and be sure to watch for the kids out sledding.  They’ll be home earlier than usual!

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, with the following details:

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FROM WEST TO EAST LATE FRIDAY MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON. LATEST INDICATIONS ARE FOR SNOW TO BEGIN IN THE GREATER HARTFORD SPRINGFIELD AREAS AND THE I91 CORRIDOR BETWEEN 10 AM AND NOON. SNOW WILL THEN OVERSPREAD THE REMAINDER OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND… INCLUDING EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND BETWEEN NOON AND 2 PM.

THE SNOW WILL BECOME HEAVY NOT TOO LONG AFTER THE ONSET. THUS TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED DURING THE AFTERNOON THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR ARE LIKELY FROM MID FRIDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING. ROADS DURING THE FRIDAY LATE DAY/EVENING COMMUTE WILL BE SNOW COVERED AND TREACHEROUS. THE SNOW SHOULD TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS THE INTERIOR DURING THE EVENING HOURS… BUT THE STEADY SNOW WILL CONTINUE ALONG THE COAST WELL INTO THE NIGHT… .ESPECIALLY ACROSS SOUTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS… INCLUDING CAPE COD AND NANTUCKET.

IN ADDITION… STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS NEAR 45 MPH WILL DEVELOP FRIDAY EVENING AND NIGHT ACROSS EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND. THIS WILL RESULT IN CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW… YIELDING VISIBILITY NEAR ZERO AT TIMES AND BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILLS. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS.

AT THIS TIME… IT LOOKS AS THOUGH MOST OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND WILL RECEIVE 6 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOWFALL BY MIDNIGHT FRIDAY NIGHT… WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS ACROSS RHODE ISLAND AND SOUTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS.

So, bundle up, make arrangements to greet your cherubs early, and start looking for the snowpants and snow boots!  Be safe, and plan now to come home early and stay home.

Dear fellow Hanoverians,

If you have lived in Hanover for any length of time, it would be hard to not know the awesome Blumberg Family.  Besides being big Hanover Foundation folks, music program supporters and generous jewelry store owners, the kids are record-setting Girl Scout cookie sellers and now Make a Wish letter-gatherers.  I am pleased to bring you this recent letter from college student Ashley Blumberg and her community-minded family:
 
I would like to invite all of our townspeople to come to the Hanover Mall and participate in a very worthwhile cause. The Make-A-Wish Foundation will receive a $1 donation for every “Letter to Santa” written and delivered to Macy’s before Dec. 24th. Through their Believe Campaign, Macy’s has agreed to donate up to
One Million Dollars
to this nonprofit organization. The average “Wish” granted to children with life-threatening medical conditions costs approximately $6500 and over 300 wishes were granted last year. The goal for 2009 is 350 wishes, so we need to get those letters written.
 
Please Write to Santa and Make Wishes Come True!
 
           I will be setting up a table by the Photo with Santa display in the center of the Mall to help generate the letter writing, collect the letters, and increase the total donations from Macy’s to Make-A-Wish as part of my college service project.  I am hoping our classroom teachers and Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troop Leaders will do this simple writing exercise (2-4 sentences) and make writing a letter to Santa into a lesson for giving to others. Please stop by the Make-A-Wish table beginning this Wednesday, December 17th between 3:00PM and 8:00PM weekdays and 10:00AM to 6:00PM on the weekend to write a letter or drop off letters written at home. Forms for letters may be downloaded using the attached template or any sheet of white paper will do. No stamp is needed! Please write those letters to Santa and stop by the Make-A-Wish table before the 24th! See you at the Mall!

Tell Santa why you’re one in a million!
Get your crayons, pencil or pen. Write your letter here, and bring it to the Hanover Mall addressed to Santa at the North Pole. Make sure you drop it into our special Santa letterbox. We’ll count them up, and for each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® up to $1,000,000. Then, we’ll bring them to the Post Office for mailing to Santa, and together, we’ll collect a million reasons to believe.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Continuing their celebration of serving the Hanover community for 96 years, Hanover’s Boy Scout Troop One has begun their annual “Light up the Town” community event.  The scouts have started selling luminary kits containing one dozen luminaries at a cost of $5.00 per kit.  The goal is to “Light up the Town”, and unite us in the glow of candle light on the evening of December 24th.  You may want to line your curbstone, driveway or front walk with these lovely white luminaries.  They also enhance your house during any party or gathering, especially during the holiday season.  For further information or to order luminaries please call Mark or Jackie at 781-829-9264.   Or, try their easy one-click ordering that can be accomplished by e-mailing jackiebubar@aol.com !  Thank you for your support.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Great fun was had this evening at the first of the “HanoverAde” gatherings to benefit our community.  What seemed like scores of children and their parents gathered at St. Mary’s Parish Hall for Family Game Night – complete with Connect Four, Pictionary and Battleship, among others.  As attendees arrived, they made donations to the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association and then were quickly welcomed to the next round of games.  Participants munched on popcorn and drinks, made new connections and re-established old ones.

The spirit of Christmas and giving pervaded the air, and those in attendance had a blast.  If you missed this event, we missed you!  Stay tuned to “Around Town on the Web” for further information about the next HanoverAde “socializing with a purpose” gathering in January.
