Zeroing in on Election Day – Tuesday, November 8

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The mid-term elections are finally upon us, and Hanover is already voting
in large numbers! As of the end of the day on Thursday, November 3rd,
fully 21% of Hanover’s registered voters had already cast their ballots,
either by Voting by Mail or Early in-person. That crushes the statewide
average of 17.5%! Great job, Hanover! Let’s keep it up!

In-person Early Voting is now over so that the Town Clerk’s Office may
prepare for Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th. The polls will be open
from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Election Day at Hanover High School, 287
Cedar Street. There is no school that day, so voters may park in either
the front or back parking lots at the High School and come in either set of
doors – front or back. We look forward to seeing you!

If you requested and received a Vote by Mail (VBM) ballot and haven’t sent
it in yet, it MUST be received or postmarked by Tuesday, November 8th at
8:00 p.m. You may drop it in the ballot drop box in front of Town Hall or
drop it in US Mail. The Town Clerk’s Office advice is that you do so this
weekend so that it is received in plenty of time. Domestically mailed
ballots postmarked by the 8th and received after the 8th will not be
counted until Monday, November 14th! The ballot drop box in front of Town
Hall will be locked for good at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, too. So, get
your ballot in TODAY!

If you will be out of town Tuesday during polling hours (7:00 a.m. – 8:00
p.m.) and don’t already have a VBM ballot, you may apply for an in-person
absentee ballot between 8:00 a.m. – 12 noon on Monday, November 7th in the
Town Clerk’s Office on the lower level of Hanover Town Hall, 550 Hanover
Street. At 12 noon on Monday the office will close so that the Town
Clerk’s Office staff can go set up at the high school for Tuesday.

Please go to:

See you at the polls!

Last day to request a mailed ballot is this Tuesday

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

As you may know, due to new legislation passed in June of 2022, Vote by
Mail is permanently available to any registered voter going forward.
However, the last day to request a mailed ballot is the 5th business day
prior to the election. For the November 8th election, the deadline for the
Town Clerk’s Office to RECEIVE (in hand, in the office) a Vote by Mail
application is this Tuesday, November 1st. This is because, according to
the U.S. Postal Service, it can take up to a week for mail (your ballot) to
get to where it needs to go once your application is received. (Keep that
in mind when you return your ballot – use the Town Hall ballot drop box
beginning next week!)

Can’t find your Vote by Mail postcard? Just fill out the Vote by Mail
application found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=xDEwq6JyjXKIbY5P/BsHzMCPUhc6GYVrsGz76PelFsxoqLt7nDNYRqoN783ZLADJ
and drop it off to the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office, Hanover Town Hall, 550
Hanover Street, TODAY!

In-person Early Voting in advance of the November 8th election

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have been remiss in sending out, of all things, the Town of Hanover’s
in-person Early Voting schedule in advance of the November 8th State
Election! In-person EV actually started last week, but it continues for
all of next week through Friday, November 4th. All registered voters in
Hanover may vote in person in the large hearing room on the first floor of
Hanover Town Hall, 550 Hanover Street.

In an effort to accommodate varying schedules, the hours for in-person
Early Voting also vary. Here’s the link to the specific hours:

Hanover church volunteers mobilize

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Members of First Congregational Church Hanover (FCCH) instantly mobilized
yesterday to answer the regional call to support the sudden arrival of more
than 100 unhoused individuals on the South Shore. Divided into two groups,
the arrivals include more than 60 children, transported with little notice
to temporary locations in Kingston and Plymouth by the MA Department of
Community and Development (MDHD), under its emergency shelter and
assistance programs. Many are undocumented immigrants originating from
Haiti or Central America, who speak little or no English.

“The call came from our regional UCC minister,” shares Rev. Peter
Johnston, lead pastor of FCCH. “There was no question that we would
immediately assemble and help. We serve as a community that welcomes all,
and this was an opportunity to fulfill that commitment, ignite compassion
and propel our faith into action.”

Rev. Johnston noted that the assistance request originated from the United
Church of Christ’s (UCC) Southern New England Conference (SNEUCC), of
which FCCH is a member parish. He was informed that the unhoused were
relocated to temporary locations, with 27 families diverted to Kingston and
12 families to Plymouth. With the region’s established shelters full and
services tapped due to high demand for housing, those transported were in
immediate need of meals, clothing and diapers. He immediately took action,
reaching out to five FCCH parishioners who jumped at the opportunity to
assist and volunteer their efforts to make a difference.

After contacting FCCH’s diaconate, the church’s Outreach and Service
Ministry, and speaking with Hanover Food Pantry Director Sally Boutin, Rev.
Johnston coordinated a food pantry pickup of donated groceries and coats.
He then mobilized the volunteers to meet him at the church’s kitchen.
Spanning just a few short hours, the group of half a dozen transformed the
groceries into a substantial prepared hot meal, packaging many servings of
barbecue chicken, rice, corn and freshly baked cookies. The group loaded
the food and coats into vehicles, creating a delivery caravan, and headed
to the Plymouth site.

“Our efforts have just begun. We’ve been in contact with other
Southern New England Conference churches and are coordinating lunches and
hot dinners to be delivered through Sunday night,” shared Rev. Johnston.
Another local UCC church is coordinating meals for the group settled in
Kingston. Today, FCCH volunteers are gathering more coats, as well as
preparing, packing, and delivering 50 lunches to the same Plymouth
location.

Pausing a moment to reflect on the sudden call to serve, and the
overwhelmingly immediate response by parish volunteers, Rev. Johnston
commented, “Jesus didn’t feed people based on their life circumstances,
Jesus fed people because they were hungry.”

To make a financial contribution to assist in FCCH’s effort to support
unhoused families and individuals, visit fcchanover.org/give-gift, click
the “other” category, and note the intent for your donation in the
comment field. To learn about FCCH’s charitable initiatives, to
participate, or to learn more about the parish, visit fcchanover.org or
follow First Congregational Church of Hanover on Facebook or Instagram.
