Everything you need to know about the Presidential Primary on Tuesday

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Presidential Primary in Massachusetts is finally upon us! Early voting
ended on Friday, March 1st, and so we are on to Election Day here in
Hanover!

Election Day – Super Tuesday – is Tuesday, March 5th, 2024. The polls are
open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Hanover High School, 287 Cedar Street.
Every registered voter may vote at this election regardless of party
affiliation. If you are “unenrolled”, commonly known as “independent”,
you’ll have to pick your ballot when you get there. Here is the webpage
with the sample ballots about a third of the way down:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=AVY3XvSSvKyAWEM5S8howPlxzSjC49NIrtlrqUdAgdBoqLt7nDMoRqoN783ZLADJ
. Make sure you know which ballot you want before you check in – once you
check in, you can’t swap your ballot for a different one! If you are
enrolled in a party, you can only vote that party’s ballot.

Did you request a Vote by Mail (VBM) ballot and not turn it in yet? The
ballot drop box in front of town hall will be open all weekend and until
8:00 p.m. on Election Day. It will be emptied regularly by election staff
with the assistance of the Hanover Police, and all of those ballots will be
counted on Election Day as long as they are received in the box before the
close of polls. Don’t bring those VBM ballots to the polls!

Tuesday is a half day of school in Hanover. As a result, voters should
access the polling area from the BACK of the high school if they are
arriving in the morning. There will be designated voter-only parking along
the music wing and near the locker rooms in the back. The front doors will
be locked during school hours (7:55 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) as per usual. The
back doors will be open, and you’ll turn right upon entering to get to the
gym/polling place. The rest of the building will be inaccessible to the
public before 12:30 p.m., so plan accordingly.

Friendly tip – make a plan now regarding when you will vote on Tuesday!
When will it fit into your day? Pro-tip – you may want to avoid the
traffic congestion from about 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and again from about
12:15 – 12:45 p.m. Fun tip – Mom on the Go Food Truck will be parked out
back and slinging grilled cheeses from 11:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.! Since it is
a half day, bring the whole family to vote and feed everybody while you are
there!

Questions may be directed to the Town Clerk’s Office at (781) 826-5000
x1079 or by e-mailing Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or Assistant Town Clerk Andrea Dello
Russo at andrea.dellorusso@hanover-ma.gov . Please be patient when
contacting us as we will be attending to the voters in front of us first.
The Town Clerk’s Office will be closed beginning at 12 noon on Monday for
the afternoon so that we may prepare and set up for the election, but it
will be open with a skeleton staff on Tuesday.

Finally – a shout out to the AMAZING Hanover Election staff. They have
been working tirelessly since early January to manage the Vote by Mail
process and In-Person Early Voting – and to make sure it is easy for ALL
Hanover voters to vote in this election. They are simply a fabulous team
of incredible people who are a pleasure to be around. They are your
neighbors and your friends – please make sure you thank them! Thanks also
to the HPD, HFD, DPW, Facilities, IT, Town Manager, Finance and School
Department staffs for their terrific cooperation as we prepared for
Tuesday’s Election AND the Hanover Girls’ Basketball State Tournament home
court advantage game on Monday night. Go Hawks – of all ages!

Gardening is Murder

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Join author Neal Sanders for his presentation, “Gardening Is Murder”
for insights of and observations by the spouse of a Master Gardener

WHAT: A free and open to the public presentation, “Gardening Is Murder”
by local mystery author Neal Sanders
WHO: Presented by the Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover
WHEN: Tuesday, March 5, 2024; refreshments at 7:15 p.m., presentation at
7:30 p.m.
WHERE: The Phoenix Lodge, 133 Broadway
WHY: The Walnut Hill Garden Club invites you to attend our March meeting, a
presentation by Neal Sanders:
Why is so much gardening information on the internet so awful? Why is it
impossible to do just one thing in the garden? Why should you never compute
the value of your labor when you garden? Why do we have garden benches even
though we never sit on them?

These are the questions that keep Neal Sanders awake at night. As the
spouse of an avid and accomplished gardener with no ‘real’
responsibilities other than to dig holes and move rocks, Neal has lots of
time to observe gardeners and their foibles. On March 5th, he’ll share
some of those observations in a talk – ‘Gardening Is Murder – that he
guarantees will be unlike any gardening lecture you’ve ever heard.

Neal is the author of 15 mysteries, many of which use garden club or
horticultural settings and all of which feature strong, independent women.
He writes ‘The Principal Undergardener’ blog, which addresses gardening
as a non-gardener who loves gardens. He and his wife, Betty, live in
Medfield, Massachusetts.

The Walnut Hill Garden Club has been promoting the beautification of
Hanover since 1967, and they invite the community to join them and learn
more about what they do and how you can help them keep Hanover beautiful.
Green thumbs and novices alike are all invited to join!

RSVP to Lisa via email: Lisaa123@gmail.com by March 1, 2024, to reserve
your seat as space is limited. This event is free and open to the public.
They hope to see you in March!

Last Day to Register to Vote or Change your Party for the March 5 Presidential Primary

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier announced that Saturday,
February 24th is the last day to register to vote or change your party
preference in the March 5th Presidential Primary. The Hanover Town Hall
will be open until 5:00 p.m. on February 24th, and on-line registration
will be available until 11:59 p.m. that night. Please come to Town Hall if
you need to register in person; staff will either be in the large hearing
room on the first floor or the Registrar’s Office on the lower level.
Read on for on-line registration information!

Any Hanover citizen who will be eighteen on or before the March 5, 2024
Election is encouraged to register to vote. Once registered, individuals
will be eligible to vote in all elections thereafter. Further, residents
may “pre-register” to vote if they are age 16 or 17, but they will not
be eligible to vote until they turn 18.

Citizens of Hanover may conveniently register to vote or change their party
status on-line, by mail or in person. The link for on-line registration is
here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=wFgrEJqi6AWSCXFMUwbdfyJcoaHlGnmnoTRmJlYuwb5oqLt7nDM4RqoN783ZLADJ
. If residents choose to register by mail they should download the
“Massachusetts Mail-In Voter Registration Form” found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=9UdczQVgknCwmXZ0sUfJ/iJcoaHlGlmnoTRmJlYuwb5oqLt7nDNIRqoN783ZLADJ
and mail the completed form to the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office.

If voters wish to register to vote in person, they may do so at two
convenient locations: Hanover Town Hall or the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
“With automatic registration now the law of the land in Massachusetts,
very few people actually need to come in to register to vote”, said
Harder-Bernier. “However, what we do occasionally see is that people who
have moved recently and/or who have not updated their driver’s license –
those people do need to update their voter registration status. We also
sometimes see 18-year-olds who do not yet have driver’s licenses who need
to register to vote. We look forward to helping those folks!”, said
Harder-Bernier.

Questions may be directed to Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov , Andrea Dello Russo at
andrea.dellorusso@hanover-ma.gov or Carol Mattes at
