Volunteers needed!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Open Space Committee (the OSC) will be working with their
partners at Wildlands Trust to improve walking trails at the Chapman’s
Landing conservation area on Wednesday, November 24 at 9:00 a.m. The group
will be installing bog bridging over wet areas, repairing boardwalks, and
trimming where necessary. If you’ve never been to that area, it’s
definitely worth a trip! The trail runs along the confluence of the
Indian Head and North Rivers on Hanover’s southern border.

The OSC needs volunteers to carry materials and install bridging – under
the expert supervision of knowledgeable folks from Wildlands Trust. Please
meet at the Boat Launch parking lot on Indian Head Drive. Materials will
be provided, but tools (gloves, safety glasses, drill, saw, loppers) would
be most helpful. Please join the Open Space Committee in making this trail
network more user-friendly. To register, go to

Programs at the John Curtis Library for adults and teens

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The good folks at the John Curtis Library are hosting a few cool events
over the next couple of weeks. Check them out!

Distance & Direction: Surveying Hanover & the Commonwealth in 1795
Monday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m.
The John Curtis Free Library will be joined by Stephen O’Neill, the
Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society, as he delves into how
town lines were established. Did you know that In 1794, the Massachusetts
General Court ordered every town in the Commonwealth to conduct a survey of
boundaries? Each survey map created was a unique, hand-drawn map, listing
natural features, roads, and mills. Explore how the surveys were conducted
using surveyor’s compasses and chains to measure out boundaries, and the
implications of those surveys today. See an original surveyor’s compass,
boundary book for Hanover, and learn how to measure in 18th Century rods,
links, and chains. Examples of the maps for the towns of Hanover, Boston,
and the North River towns will be examined to show the artistry of the
skill that went into their creation. Please register here:
