Celtic poetry just in time for St. Patrick’s Day

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Long-time Around Town On the Web readers will know that ATOTW was founded
to help Hanover non-profit organizations and the Town of Hanover to spread
the word about organization events, fundraisers, town events, and the like.
But, every now and then I receive and post information about something
that bends these rules because it is absolutely awesome news to share about
Hanover’s own. Hope you enjoy the following information as much as I
did! Thanks to Tina and Phil Robinson for sending it and the attachment
along.

Retired legendary Hanover High School English teacher, John Hopkins, has
recently release his first book of poems entitled Celtic Nan.

Father Timothy Joyce sums up this book best by saying “John Hopkins, in
this anthology of his poems, opens up the depths of ordinary life
experiences, relationships, and the significance of faith in our lives.”
Father Joyce further said, “I took delight and just smiled as I read many
of his poems.”

The book is available on Amazon and can be delivered quickly if you have
Amazon Prime.

If you do not have access to Amazon, contact John (always Mr. Hopkins to
me!) directly at: brotherjohnnyhop@gmail.com .

It’s a perfect gift for St. Patrick’s Day!

Partial hiring freeze causes delays and service changes

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier confirmed this past week with
Finance Director Chelsea Stevens that due to the COVID-19 partial hiring
freeze, the Town of Hanover will not be filling the Assistant Town Clerk
position until sometime after the May Annual Town Meeting confirms approval
of the position for Fiscal 2022. The office used to have two full-time
employees, and now there is only one. Therefore, the Town Clerk’s Office
will continue to be understaffed for the rest of this fiscal year, as it
has been since the end of August, 2020.

“Hanover residents are used to the Town Clerk’s Office acting as the
welcoming and helpful ‘front porch to the old-style General Store’, and
providing superior customer service” said Harder-Bernier.
“Unfortunately, with the reduction in staff to half our usual
availability, we are simply unable to fulfill the mission of this office
the way we would like to fulfill it, and the way Hanover residents are used
to,” she continued.

In order to protect the integrity of the work that is urgently necessary
and due to the COVID-19 partial hiring freeze and service cuts, the
following services have been changed as follows:
• The Town, including the Town Clerk’s Office, no longer provides
notary public services
• As a result of a tag manufacturing delay and the staffing shortage, dog
license applications for 2021 are back-logged and currently being responded
to approximately 4-6 weeks after the application. That will result in a
lag-time for checks to be cashed, but residents should rest assured that
their checks are secured in the meantime.
• The phones will be answered “live” as much as humanly possible. We
will strive to return phone messages within one business day. In the
meantime, residents are urged to seek information on the Town Clerk’s
section of the website.
• All records requests, including vital records (birth, marriage and
death certificates), business certificates, public records, etc., will be
responded to as soon as possible, but as the law allows, they may take up
to 10 days to be responded to. Residents are kindly asked to plan
accordingly.
• In-person appointments are being made for people who wish to file
marriage intentions or need to be sworn in to a new position.
• Because of the pandemic, ALL other transactions are being handled
electronically, via a drop-off in the front door mail slot, or via US Mail
– depending on the nature of the transaction and the location of the
requestor.
• The planned application for CPC funding to further the planned archival
of files from the basement of Town Hall that are now stored at Sylvester
School has been delayed at least another year.

“Hanover residents should rest assured that this is not how I like
services to be provided, and I sincerely regret any inconvenience or delay
the COVID-19-related partial hiring freeze is causing. I will do my best
to do both jobs for now! I look forward to re-authorizing a full-time
Assistant Town Clerk to this office at the May 3 Annual Town Meeting,”
said Harder-Bernier. “In the meantime, the one service that will not
change is the administration of our elections. That has always been of
utmost importance. Fortunately, the former Finance Director Lincoln
Heineman agreed with me and allowed me to hire four temporary per-diem
staff back in the fall. Hopefully that prioritization will continue and
per diem staff can be re-hired this spring as we gear up for the May Annual
Town Election,” she continued.

Residents who wish to transact business with the Town Clerk’s Office
should contact Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or (781) 826-5000 x1079.

Help your older neighbors get a vaccine appointment

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I love how the Hanover Emergency Management folks always find a way to make
the best out of a challenging situation.

As you probably already know, there’s not a lot of vaccine kicking around.
First responders and then seniors over 75 years of age were prioritized
first, and seniors over 65 or people with 2 or more certain medical
conditions will be allowed to receive their first shots beginning Thursday,
February 18th. For more information about eligibility, go to:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=20bJK+nstwe5NDh4KgT4F8eFKAM8SGzzhwNcGFgeAr1oqLt7nDN4RqoN783ZLADJ
.

The vaccine that is available to all of those folks is largely available
only to those with a computer and/or the ability to navigate a
less-than-intuitive state website, found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=ilHLHauC5AmzKdn0lJTfEceFKAM8SAzzhwNcGFgeAr1oqLt7nDP4RqoN783ZLADJ
. Based on my conversations with my older friends, that leaves out far too
many people.

The issue is that some currently eligible folks aren’t universally
computer-savvy. Here’s where the Hanover Emergency Management folks come
in! Starting this week, the Hanover COVID-19 Hotline (781) 924-1925 will
be STAFFED with helpful computer-savvy Hanover staff who can answer your
questions in real time AND help make an appointment for people who qualify.
It will be staffed Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. On
weekends, holidays and after 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, the excellent 24
hour recorded hotline will answer lots more of your basic questions.

The irony of this e-mail is that it is probably not reaching the people who
need it most. :) So, therefore, a request, dear readers. Please call
your favorite retired neighbor this week and see if they need help getting
vaccinated. If so, please give them that hotline number – (781) 924-1925.
Spread the word…let’s care for each other, Hanover!

More vaccine information

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The town had a great response to the first COVID-19 vaccination clinic for
Hanover residents over the age of 75 scheduled for tomorrow, February 10th.
That clinic is now full. If you were lucky enough to get an appointment,
I love sharing this news: Hanover resident Kimberly Poirier is able and
willing to provide masked/socially distant transportation for you. She can
be reached at kimberlypoirier@gmail.com . More good news for today includes
some updates and reminders:

Clinic appointments continue to open up in surrounding towns. Go to
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=mO3F1SKz+YSFX0XSVHXaimpvq8WG961ip9d9AORZ8p5oqLt7nDMoRqoN783ZLADJ
and search for another nearby. For instance, there is one at the
Marshfield Fairgrounds that began adding appointments on Monday:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=LVy5PaVFT0GSMcxOAIKYj2pvq8WG921ip9d9AORZ8p5oqLt7nDOYRqoN783ZLADJ
I have friends over 75 who have gone to Hanover’s CVS, Fenway, Gillette
and their local doctor’s offices. Check out the state website and keep
trying.

As Hanover opens up additional appointments at future clinics here in
Hanover, that information will be shared as soon as possible right here on
ATOTW.

I’ve gotten several calls from people who do not have access to a computer
or a family member who can help them. Please share this COVID-19 Hotline
number for Hanover residents widely: (781) 924-1925. There are people
answering that phone line who can help make an appointment for you (if you
qualify/this is your Phase).

If you are not sure if this is your “Phase” (if you are prioritized for the
vaccine yet), please go to:

Helping permanently disabled voters to vote!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier today reminded registered
Hanover voters and caregivers of registered Hanover voters that the
Massachusetts legislature passed a bill in 2013 that amended election laws
pertaining to permanently disabled voters. Massachusetts General Laws
Chapter 54, Section 86 reads in part, “A voter who will be unable by
reason of permanent disability to cast his vote in person at the polling
place may file once with the city or town clerk a certificate executed by a
registered physician who is personally acquainted with the voter and aware
of his permanent disability, stating that it is reasonably certain because
of permanent physical disability that the voter will be unable to cast his
vote in person at the polling place on the day of the election.”

Once that letter from the physician has been received by the Hanover Town
Clerk’s Office, the voter will once a year automatically receive an
application for an absentee ballot by mail. The application may then be
filled out and returned to the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office, and will be
good for the calendar year if the voter so designates. Absentee ballots,
as they become available prior to an election, will then be automatically
mailed to the permanently disabled voter.
“This is a relatively simple way to save time and ease the load of a
permanently disabled voter or caregiver. Just send us a letter from your
family physician and we will take it from there. I am pleased to be able
to continue to offer this service to Hanover residents”, said Town Clerk
Harder-Bernier.

For more information about this process, please contact Hanover Town Clerk
Catherine Harder-Bernier at Catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or (781)
826-5000 x1079. Letters from physicians regarding a patient’s permanent
disability may be sent to Catherine Harder-Bernier, Hanover Town Clerk, 550
Hanover Street, Hanover, MA 02339.

COVID-19 vaccine continues to be distributed in Hanover!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Great news on the COVID-19 vaccine front! Hanover residents who live at
Elmwood Farm Drive (“Cushing Residences”) have started to receive phone
calls from volunteer members of the Community Emergency Response Team to
schedule their first vaccinations for Wednesday, February 3rd, with a
second shot on Wednesday, March 3rd. If you or someone you know lives at
Cushing and hasn’t received a phone call yet, please be patient. Calls are
being made all this week.

This is great news for the residents who live in that elderly housing
facility. It’s coming Hanover! You’ll be able to hug Grandma and Grandpa
soon.
