Annual Town Election and Annual Town Meeting

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It’s that time of the year! First, please return your Vote by Mail ballot.
We have received only 555 out of 962 requested early or absentee ballots
as of June 18th. We’ve got some work to do, Hanover! Let’s do this!
Ballots can be returned in the front door mail slot of Town Hall by 12 noon
on Friday, June 26th, or directly to the polls at HHS from 12 noon – 6:00
p.m. on Saturday, June 27th. Ballots must be returned to the polls by 6:00
p.m. on the 27th in order to be counted. Postmarks don’t count!

Next, the Annual Town Election will be Saturday, June 27th from 12 noon to
6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School. There’s a race for Selectman, and a late
write-in for School Committee made that a race too. Social distancing and
masks will be expected and please bring your own black pen. Plan to wait
in line so that we can maintain social distancing. A sample ballot and
additional information are both found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=EEIz323FWQGGLmIsQ/62wM1pfz69p3SFqRxDQ3V0mXxoqLt7nDO4RqoN783ZLADJ
.

And finally, read this for Town Meeting information. A Special Town
Meeting to close out FY ’20 will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29th
at Starland, 645 Washington Street. Yes, Starland. Not Hanover High.
Here’s the warrant:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=TzQW4si1mc6sd4wfWELQUs1pfz69pwSFqRxDQ3V0mXxoqLt7nDPYRqoN783ZLADJ
. That will be followed by the Annual Town Meeting on the same night,
Monday, June 29th at 7:30 p.m. also at Starland, 645 Washington Street.
Yes, you heard that right, Starland. It’s a big place – enter down by the
mini-golf check-in area! Here’s the warrant:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=qqqIpzQr0sePmV06ShIN8M1pfz69p9SFqRxDQ3V0mXxoqLt7nDPYRqoN783ZLADJ
. Get there early. Plan to wait in line. Masks are expected; chairs
will be 10 feet apart…on purpose. We want to keep you safe and healthy!

For more information about the Annual Town Election, contact Town Clerk
Catherine Harder-Bernier at catherine.harder-bernier@hanover-ma.gov or
(781) 826-5000 x1079. For more information about the Annual Town Meeting,
contact Moderator Doug Thomson at moderator@hanover-ma.gov .

This is surely the wackiest Annual Town Election and Annual Town Meeting
year…in our lifetimes. Don’t let that get in the way of your voice being
heard! See you there!

First Congregational honors pastor

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The First Congregational Church of Hanover recently honored their interim
pastor, The Reverend Doctor John Terry, on the 50th anniversary of his
ordination as a minister. Reverend Terry was presented with an inscripted
silver communion chalice by the congregation. He also received many
congratulatory emails, texts, cards, and letters from the churches he has
served since 1970, as well as others in the ministry. He has been the
minister at First Congregational Church since the Fall of 2019. He will
remain in Hanover until a call is issued for a permanent or settled
minister. Reverend Terry was one of the speakers at the recent vigil for
George Floyd and other lives lost to racism.

Most recently, Reverend Terry served at Plymouth Congregational Church in
Syracuse, New York, and before that at First Church in Sandwich, MA. He has
been preaching virtual sermons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sermons may be
found on the church website at www.fcchanover.org. He may be contacted
through the church website or by calling the church office at 781-826-4762.

For more information, contact office@fcchanover.org.

Tight on time to vote by mail, so Town Clerk’s Office re-opens mornings

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

We’re getting a little tight on time to vote early by mail in the June 27th
Annual Town Election. At this point, residents are encouraged to drop
their applications or ballots in the front door mail slot of Town Hall
rather than relying on snail mail to get them to Town Hall on time. EARLY
ballots by mail are available to anyone without an excuse for this
election!

Additionally, even though the rest of Town Hall is closed to the public,
beginning Monday June 15th, the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office will be open
for essential services, including in-person absentee voting from 8:00 a.m.
– 12 noon. Masks are expected and please bring your own black pen.
Absentee ballots are available for anyone who will be out of town during
polling hours (12 noon – 6:00 p.m.) on June 27th, has a physical disability
(which for this year includes “fear of COVID-19”), or if your religious
beliefs prevent you from coming to the polls on June 27th. Here is the
link to the ABSENTEE ballot application to get you started:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=fV+8di3xyXy+qVSdeCH84IdLfLJwIVJplnvZzlYu+HpoqLt7nDOIRqoN783ZLADJ
.

We will also accept EARLY ballot applications (link is here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=9XjV017Ay7ayt2Dda+e5DYdLfLJwISJplnvZzlYu+HpoqLt7nDMoRqoN783ZLADJ
), or you may drop off your early ballot directly to us – but generally
speaking only from 8:00 a.m. – 12 noon.! The Town Clerk’s Office will also
be open certain other days at odd hours for several other special
functions; see the Town Clerk’s section of the website here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=UJmqGQXBc+mnurrds3wrQIdLfLJwIVJplnvZzlYu+HpoqLt7nDN4RqoN783ZLADJ
for details and any related updates or changes.

For more information, please contact me at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or by calling (781) 826-5000 x1079.
We are fairly overwhelmed with the vote by mail process, please be patient
and leave a message if we don’t pick up!

JOHN CURTIS FREE LIBRARY BOOK SALE ROOM DONATIONS

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Although the drop slots at the JCFL are now open to receive library
returns, they are NOT accepting donations for the book sale space. The
book sale room will NOT be reopening in the near future, and they have no
way to accept, quarantine, and store donations.

The books that are available FREE OF CHARGE on the carts outside our
entrance have been quarantined in the library since mid-March, thus are
virus-free.

Donations left at the door by well-meaning patrons CANNOT be guaranteed to
be virus-free. PLEASE find other outlets for books you would like to
share. The library is NOT in a position to absorb them at this time.
THANK YOU!

Amnesty and FREE at the John Curtis Free Library

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
I haven’t ventured very far from home since mid-March; who has? But, I
have been back and forth to Town Hall quite a bit, and recently noticed a
sign out in front of the library regarding long over-due library books.
I’ve had two John Curtis Free Library books in my house since March, and
was fully prepared to get down on one knee to beg for forgiveness (and
simultaneously open my wallet wide) when I returned them. I knew the staff
had been furloughed, and was ready to consider my substantial fines my
contribution toward getting them back in-house. :)

Low-and-behold, a minor miracle of coronovirus impact reasonableness
greeted me this week. The sign says that the John Curtis Library is not
yet open, but the book drop is. And guess what? No fines! No fines all
month! Until June 30th! I quickly stopped at home and grabbed one of my
long-overdue books and dropped it in the book drop, and made an internal
pledge to finish the other one this week. Amnesty is sweet!

While I was visiting the book drop in the back of the library, I was
reminded of another small miracle. There were several whole carts of books
simply available for the taking. Yup, help yourself! Free!

With grateful thanks to the good folks at the John Curtis Library…it
truly is the John Curtis FREE Library this month!

the 17th.

Additionally, the last day and time to register to vote at the Annual Town

Any Hanover citizen who will be eighteen on or before the first day of Town
Meeting (June 29th) or by the Town Election (June 27th) is encouraged to
register to vote. Once registered, individuals will be eligible to vote in
all elections thereafter. Further, residents may “pre-register” to
vote if they are age 16 or 17, but they will not be eligible to vote until
they turn 18.

Citizens of Hanover may conveniently register to vote or change their party
status on-line, by mail or in person. The link for on-line registration is

turned on less than 10 votes just in the past few years. Register now to
vote…so you can vote in May!”

Route 139 Corridor Study

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Here’s something we haven’t talked about in a while – the Route 139
Corridor Study. It got lost in my “Covid-19 – shuffle”, for sure. I went
looking for some unrelated information this evening and came across this
presentation from about a month ago. I thought this would be of interest
to all of us as residents of Hanover:

Hanover Spring Cleaning – sign up today!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Join your neighbors on Saturday, May 30, 2020 to continue the tradition of
Hanover Spring Cleaning by cleaning the street in front of your property.
During these difficult times, while we can’t come together to clean the
town, we can still come together as a community by cleaning as individuals.

While this year’s Hanover Spring Cleaning will be different from our
inaugural event and we are not able to clean communal areas, we still plan
to have a registration site to understand how many people are
participating.

Please register using the link below:

Additionally, we are partnering with the Hanover Garden Club this year and
all participants who are interested will be given bulbs for planting in the
fall.

Thank you for your continued support to keep this tradition going strong.
