Dear fellow Hanoverians:

South Shore Conservatory (SSC) announces it is now enrolling for classes
and private lessons on all instruments and voice for the 2020/2021 school
year. Fall semester starts Thursday, September 10.

In addition to offering a 12 percent discount on all private lessons, SSC
is also offering a five percent multi-student family discount, and a ten
percent frontline worker discount when students lock in their lesson time
for the 2020/2021 school year. Once SSC receives the new COVID guidelines
and the go-ahead to open their campuses for lessons, students will be
offered a new hybrid flexible model of study, combining virtual and
in-person learning. Until then, lessons will continue online only.

Music Together Online, for children from birth to four, continues through
the fall, offering a joyful introduction to song, dance and rhythm. This
new online version allows not only the caretaker, but also grandparents and
other siblings to join the fun remotely.

New for this fall, when students sign up for private lessons on orchestral
instruments, they may also join one of the Conservatory’s three SSC Youth
Orchestra (SSCYO) tiered virtual ensembles for free. Under the guidance of
Program Director/Symphony Conductor Elijah Langille, this sequential youth
orchestra program provides opportunities for young musicians to perform
symphonic music at a high level in a well-organized and supportive full
orchestra program. Currently online, SSCYO begins its fall season
virtually. As restrictions are lifted, it will move into a hybrid model.
SSCYO’s Symphony ensemble is scheduled to perform with the Plymouth
Philharmonic Orchestra in March of 2021.

SSC’s Rock Band program continues for middle and high school musicians
interested in working on group dynamics and developing a cohesive band
sound. Bands also learn how to use the gear typically associated with
rock, how to promote themselves, how to write and rehearse original music
through collaborative composition.

For adult musicians, SSC is also offering an adult ensemble program.

Thousands of you (yes, thousands!) have mailed in Vote By Mail application
postcards for the September 1 and/or November 3 elections. The Hanover
Town Clerk’s Office is processing them as fast as possible while still
retaining complete and accuracy and attention to detail. We’ve hired extra
per diem election worker staff to help facilitate this process, but we
thank you in advance for your patience and understanding regarding the
unprecedented volume. We previously may have had a few hundred for any
given November election!

Are you wondering if we received your application? Great question.
There’s an easy way to find out. Just go to the “Track My Ballot” feature

The good folks at the Hanover DPW and the North and South Rivers Watershed
Association are sponsoring a video contest for residents of the South Shore
WaterSmart communities, of which Hanover is one, as follows:

Now, YOU have an opportunity to help educate the public by creating a fun
video that highlights either stormwater pollution and how to prevent it, or
ways to conserve water. You don’t need any fancy video equipment to
qualify! Videos should be sent to news@harbormedia.org and should be 1-3
minutes in length. The deadline to submit your video is August 31, 2020.

The top winning video will win the grand prize of a $500 gift card.
Additional winning videos will receive a NSRWA/Harbor Media swag bag with
hats, t-shirts and more.

WaterSMART is a nonprofit partnership between the NSRWA and 12 towns on the
South Shore: Cohasset, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Hull, Kingston,
Marshfield, Norwell, Pembroke, Rockland, Scituate and Weymouth. Our
programs are based on the belief that education is key. Since its creation,

ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS: Dave Delaney was elected Chair of the Board and
Rhonda Nyman was elected Vice-Chair. Going forward, the Board will
continue to meet on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. Below please find the tentative

SELECTMEN FORUM: As part of the meeting the floor was opened for a
Selectmen Forum where the Selectmen were given the opportunity to bring
topics to the Board. Selectman Nyman made a statement relating to a letter
that was circulated prior to the election in June. I expressed the need for
both the Board of Selectmen and the Town of Hanover to issue anti-racism
statements, implement a social media policy for town employees, elected
officials and volunteers and to emphasize that social media platform groups
(such as “Hanover Connect” and “02339”) are not affiliated with the Town of
Hanover and certain racist and bigoted statements made on that platform in
no way represent the Town of Hanover. Selectmen Barry expressed his
thoughts on Senate Bill 2820 (the police standards reform bill in the MA
Senate) and led a discussion about COVID-19 related vehicle purchases
related to the MIH program.

FY2019 AUDIT: The Town of Hanover’s FY2019 audit documents were presented
to the Board by Erica Lussler, a manager with Melanson Heath, an
independent auditor. As it has in years past, Hanover received a clean
opinion, which is the best opinion available. Additionally, Hanover
received no recommendations for improvements from the auditor for the first
time in recent memory. Finally, our Unassigned Fund Balance (the sum of the
General Fund Unassigned Fund Balance and General Stabilization Fund)
position continues to grow and is at 11.8% of Operating Expenditures. For
context, bond rating agencies like to see an assigned Fund Balance of at
least 5% to 10% and we are well above that threshold. Cheers our Finance
Department for their hard work!

TRANSFER STATION: DPW Director Victor Diniak updated the Board on
implementation of the new transfer station policy. The policy is being
followed, stickers are being checked and C&D remains closed. The Board
discussed whether to revisit C&D disposal and Mr. Diniak recommended that,
if the Board do so, the fees charge cover the cost paid by the town. The
Board agreed to meet at the Transfer Station to discuss changes that could
be made to the layout of the Transfer Station if C&D disposal were to be
reinstated.

**UPDATE: The Board of Selectmen will meet next Tuesday, July 28th at 7:00
a.m. at the Transfer Station (118 Rockland Street) with a rain date of
Wednesday, July 29th at 7:00 a.m.**

APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSES: The Board approved an application by the owners
of The Draft on 53 (637 Washington Street) to expand their liquor license
to include adjacent function rooms and two outside patios (one of which is
already up and running pursuant to the ABCC’s June 1, 2020, order allowing
all licensees for on-premises consumption of alcohol to commence outdoor
table service through November 1, 2020). The Board also ratified an outdoor
license approval for Brothers Grill and Bar (778 Washington Street) which
had been previously approved by the Town Manager.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

For the first time ever, South Shore Conservatory (SSC) is offering free
participation in its SSC Youth Orchestra program for the first 65 students
signing up for private lessons on orchestral instruments at SSC this fall.
Under the direction of Elijah Langille, the orchestra program will be
offered virtually for the 2020/2021 school year.

Instruments considered orchestra include including string instruments such
as violin, viola, cello, and double bass; brass instruments such as the
horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba; woodwind instruments such as flute, oboe,
clarinet and bassoon; and percussion instruments such as timpani, bass
drum, triangle, snare drum, cymbals, and mallet percussion instruments.

SSC Youth Orchestra (SSCYO) is an auditioned, sequential, three-tiered
youth orchestra program that provides an opportunity for young musicians to
perform symphonic music at a high level in a well-organized and supportive
full orchestra program. SSCYO meets online Wednesday evenings.

“It’s extremely beneficial for students to perform in a group such as
an orchestra, so that they can put into practice skills they learn in their
weekly private lesson,” said Langille. “The earlier they do this, the
more comfortable they become with their instrument.”

When the orchestra program moved online in March due to COVID-19, Langille,
who conducts the orchestra’s Symphony ensemble, and Repertory ensemble
conductor Maria Varonko were concerned their students would not welcome
this new virtual learning experience. They were delighted when students
not only embraced the new platform, but asked for more.

“SSCYO students have asked us to continue our Zoom sessions throughout
the summer months. They see this as a time to connect with other
musicians, and to find motivation to keep playing,” said Langille.

Participants in the virtual orchestra can expect fun weekly masterclasses
designed to connect kids with high quality instruction, as well as with one
another, in an interactive way, plus some individualized instruction. The
group will also experience and provide music for a virtual gallery walk
with a local artist, perform a holiday favorite for an online sing-along,
and celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by virtually performing his work of
Ave Verum Corpus, arranged by local conductor and composer Steven
Karidoyanes. Students will be mentored by members of the Plymouth
Philharmonic to better understand, express, and present this famous work.

Langille is hopeful the pandemic will be under control by March 2021, in
time for Symphony students to perform in a side-by-side concert on March
27, 2021 with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Parks and Recreation staff wishes they could be running around
the Hanover Middle School fields with you right now, playing tennis
baseball and tie-dying! Since we can’t all be together in person this
summer, they hope you will join them online for some of their virtual
programming!

Starting the week of July 12th, weekly contests will be posted to their
social media accounts. Participants can complete the activity at home when
they have time and submit photos of their final product for a chance to win
a PARKS and REC SWAG BAG. Contests include cupcake decorating, poetry,
chalk art, robot design, and stick raft building.

Every Wednesday, July 15th through August 12th, you can join some of the
Hanover Parks and Recreation staff on ZOOM for Virtual Snack Club.
Participants will be sent an ingredient list for each weekly snack and will
join the staff on ZOOM for step-by-step instructions on how to prepare
kid-friendly snacks.

Also on Wednesdays, from July 15th through August 12th, you can join some
of the Hanover Parks and Recreation staff on ZOOM for Virtual Arts and
Crafts. Participants will be sent a supply list for each weekly craft and
will join the staff on ZOOM for step-by-step instructions on how to make
each craft.

Check out Hanover Parks and Recreation’s social media accounts on Thursdays
for the weekly Minute to Win It Challenge! The staff will post a
one-minute challenge for you to complete at home with your family. Submit
your challenge videos to them for a chance to win a PARKS and REC SWAG BAG.

Even the COA in town is getting into Zoom. Awesome. It doesn’t get much
better than that!

The Hanover COA will present John Galluzzo on Wednesday, July 15 at 1:00
p.m. for a discussion titled Scenes of Spring 2020. John went out for a
nature walk every day this year very locally, mostly Hanover and Norwell,
and during the pandemic he found some pretty amazing things (lots of
wildflowers, he rescued a baby owl, etc.). Join John on his adventures.

More COVID-19 lemons-into-lemonade! Stuck at home? Check this out!

If you can’t resist using pot covers as cymbals, or wooden spoons as drum
sticks, South Shore Conservatory’s (SSC) Kitchen Gadget Throwdown may be
just the fun virtual competition for you and your family this summer.
Families are encouraged to submit videos of themselves making music using
kitchen items they can strike, scrape or shake. The winning video,
determined by a panel of musicians including SSC President Karen Geer and
percussionist Ed Sorrentino, receives a $100 cash prize and is featured in
SSC’s The Big Reveal event on Labor Day weekend. The winner will be
announced at this event.

Videos should be no longer than three minutes. Singing in the video is
permitted. Judges will be looking at qualities such as creativity,
cohesiveness, and preparation. By submitting a video, participants are
giving SSC permission to post it on on-line.

To enter the competition, participants must submit their mp4 to SSC

COVID-19 down-time is sparking some creative juices amongst Hanover’s kids.
I’ve received fundraising and kid-for-hire flyers from young neighbors in

Sharing Smiles was created by two teenage sisters from Hanover, Bella and
Norah Kelley, who wanted to spread happiness and make people smile. Their
goal is to make people happy through their t-shirts. Their t-shirts are a
surprise and you won’t know which one you are getting until it comes to
you, but each one is equally special. Whether it be their Happy:) shirt,
Smile:) shirt, or Laugh:) shirt, you will love these tie-dye creations!

With each t-shirt bought, 10% of the profit will be donated to
TinySuperheroes. TinySuperheroes empowers children with disabilities or
illnesses to help them through hard times. Each child gets their own
superhero cape and Sharing Smiles will be donating money to help sponsor
more children to get their capes. The TinySuperheroes are always spreading
smiles through their bravery, so help Bella and Norah help them by
purchasing a Sharing Smiles tie-dye t-shirt or sending it as a surprise
gift to a friend.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In response to requests from parents for summer enrichment programs for
their children, South Shore Conservatory announces its plan to offer both
virtual private lessons and virtual programs this summer.

For children birth to four with caregiver, SSC offers Music Together®
Online, a gentle introduction to music. The new Zoom music-making platform
allows friends and grandparents to participate in the classes as well, from
afar.

Flute players at all levels are invited to join the ONLY online flute
symphony! SSC’s Flute Symphony, which runs Monday and Wednesday evenings
from July 6-29, gathers online to play and learn together, culminating in a
virtual ensemble of flute symphony selections on Wednesday, July 29.

SMFCONNECT, a virtual program of Summer Music Festival, offers for winds,
percussion and string students currently in grades 5 – college, an
opportunity to develop their core musicianship in a supportive, fun, and
interactive environment. The program, structured to be flexible, runs from
Monday through Thursday, July 13 through July 30, gives students and
families the opportunity to choose from a wide range of experiences and
time commitments.

For singers, Summer Vocal Institute Online, which runs from July 27 through
August 7, offers a safe way to continue building their vocal skills.
Features include daily movement, vocal technique, ensemble and solo
repertoire, ear-training, dynamic group instruction, individual instruction
in masterclass format, technical support for Zoom and the Acapella app, and
virtual ensemble keepsake recordings. It also provides a social connection
with singing friends, materials for easy, at-home practice between sessions
and plenty of time away from the screen to enjoy summer.

For children interested in drama, SSC’s Curtain Going Up, a one or
two-week program running from August 3 through August 14, introduces
students, ages four to six, to the world of theatre through dramatic play,
movement, music, and art activities. Each week focuses on a different
theme, concluding with a Friday presentation for family and friends.
Let’s Put on a Show, for ages six to 12, runs July 20 through July 31 and
explores drama skills online. Students explore character development,
monologue and dialogue, writing short skits, improvisation and more through
drama games and guided activities. Students prepare and share a
presentation for family and friends on the last day. Both classes are
conducted via Zoom.

South Shore Conservatory (SSC) also announced that, in addition to offering
a 12 percent discount on all private lessons, they are also offering a five
percent multi-student family discount, and a ten percent frontline worker
discount when students lock in their lesson time for the 2020/2021 school
year. Enrollment for the fall is open now. By registering by Saturday,
July 11, students can lock in the new online tuition rates for the entire
school year, even if it is safe to return to traditional in-person format.
